Meh, better than riding the bench for most of the time and it doesn't look he'll get major minutes with the way Jennings/DJ have been playing the past 3 games. Might as well let him play a few dleague games and get his confidence up.

Just kinda annoying that shortly after Stan talks about wanting to play him more he gets sent to the D-League. I understand the move, but I don't like it. I also wonder if this means that Datome will potentially get some minutes now.

It's just to get some big minutes - but I assume they recall him up on Piston game days as we need him on our bench just in case as well. Should send Datome there as well, if Gigi wouldn't be too insulted with slumming like that.

I have to assume we spent a lot of money to have our own proprietary D-League team, and SVG hired Otis Smith to coach them, for exactly this reason. Why own the Drive if you're not going to make the most out of it as an asset? I applaud the move and hope the Pistons (and by that I mean SVG) use the Drive the same way MLB teams use their top AAA affiliates; Dinwiddie wasn't getting minutes and needs to play his way back from his injury, so let's get him the time he needs in the D-League. This is just smart, forward-thinking management.

Looks like you guys are going to get your wish and have him in the starting lineup.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing. I think Kilo has a pretty good handle on this one, and DocRI makes some good points too. Pretty sure I read where the Drive would run the same SVG system. Wouldn't be surprised to see him back with the parent club fairly soon.

I still don't get how you guys think this is the "PG of the future" :noway:

He's clearly nowhere close to being ready for the NBA. He can't even get trash minutes on the Pistons. He'll be "successful" if he can become a backup PG.

I can't find where anyone in this thread said he was the PG of the future? Completely agree with anyone who says we don't know what we have in Dinwiddie. However, not sure why you say it's clear that he's nowhere close to being ready for the NBA? In the brief run he's had he hasn't looked great, but neither has he looked lost or scared. Partly, I think folks like to see the young guys get some run when the situation allows it just to see what they have.

There's actually several posters who think Dinwiddie could be the PG of the future. They've posted as much.

It's too soon for anyone to make the call on Dinwiddie, which us why sending him to the D League is a good thing.

Let him play big minutes as the PG, running Stan's system for Otis!

This. People need to stop acting like our 2nd round picks are top 5 guys. Let him work up to minutes in the DLeague and play him when he's ready.

Great move, its a opportunity for Spencer to play big minutes and get some experience. Both DJ and BJ are playing well, why change anything with our current winning streak.

I am sure Dinwiddie will get his chance at playing some real NBA minutes later this season. Most rookies are not NBA ready, this draft class is no different. Other than Wiggins and Payton (+Jabari) none of the rookies are starting. Most are inefficient backups for lottery teams or racking up DNPs.

And Dinwiddie has shown glimpses of nice PG play when he was on the court. His potential has not changed, still intriguing prospect with his size at PG.

 Yes, I know, which is why I said "in this thread." I understand being skeptical, but I won't write him off until I see what he actually has at this level. Additionally, although he hasn't seen much run, the team seems pretty positive about him. Most 2nd round picks never pan out, but some do. The point I was making was that just because you comment on his assignment to the D-League doesn't mean you're convinced that he's the PG of the future. My opinion is that it's unreasonable to conclude either that "he's the PG of the future" or that he has no chance of ever being a piece in the puzzle. Time will tell.

The OP's post spelled it out just as clearly.

My point was, and still stands, that NO, this isn't what all of us think. And if you do speak for a majority of this board, then people are delusional. The D-league is designed for exactly this type of player. A young guy who needs time against players better than what he played in college, and on an NBA-like schedule. The only reason people would be upset about this is if they have some out of this world idea of what Dinwiddie is capable of.

You can choose to not "write him off until you see what he actually has at this level", but there is a very obvious reason you haven't seen him at this level yet. It's because his coaches don't believe he's capable of performing in the NBA yet.

2nd round gems get discovered the majority of the time because a team gets into a bad situation and is forced to play them because of an injury or similar situation. Unless that happens here, I don't anticipate Dinwiddie making it into the rotation.

Do the Drive have a game tonight? I'd appreciate Dinwiddie updates if anyone can do that.

I'll bite.

Yeah, I'm one of the guys who think he might turn out to be our PGOTF. I've been impressed by the glimpses we've had of him, and I'm convinced he would have gone around or in the lottery had he not been injured.

I like his composure on the court, I love his size and PG skills (I think those skills are obvious when you watch him play). I love his attitude, and supposedly this kid has a high BB IQ. It looks like he can shoot the ball, and he's not afraid.

He needs PT and coaching, but we knew that pre-draft.

At the beginning of the season, SVG stated that the three 21 year olds were THE building block guys on our team. The players have come out and said he can really play and was a second round steal.

We'll see in time, of course. But there is no reason why he couldn't become a core player for us and a good starting PG. The argument that he "can't because he's just a second round pick" is about as thoughtless as it gets around here. Again, he was likely a high first round pick but for his injury - in a very deep draft class. Teams didn't want to risk their pick on a player coming off an injury in that loaded draft.

Just by chance, you're not one of those people who are the dreading the potential of the Pistons getting a pick around 8th-10th are you?
