Starting to think that maybe Monroe and SVG....

Had an agreement in place. Sign the Q.O. We'll get rid of Smith. We'll go over the cap in 2015 and give you the full 5yr max after we improve out team.
Cause if we just signed him last summer we don't have near the resources or cap space in 2015 to improve our team

What will Monroe's cap hold be as a UFA come the off-season?

I really doubt that was the case ,Moose would be rising a hell of alot by doing that.

That's a huge rsk to take when we could have signed him , this is tangible money vs a promise. I think moose signed the QO because every day he walked into practice he saw smith shooting a 3 and wasn't going to deal with that for another 3 years

if we sign moose to the 5 year max then we wouldn't be able to offer that to Drummond.

I still maintain that Monroe isn't nearly a max player anyways. he is skilled but his lack of athleticism seriously hinders his effectiveness.

If true, I'm really impressed with Monroe's acting performance. His "get me off this team" looks and general apathy during the first part of the season, all while knowing this team supported him and had a 5 year deal in place? Someone get Greg an Emmy PRONTO!

No one leaves 50+ mil on the table just because. He wanted the max, Pistons didn't offer it to him and the Smith situation was also a factor. He made a business decision that he can choose his next destination + get more money.

Greg has a theology degree - he's not your regular NBA player dude. I don't think he wanted a max deal - I think he wants to be happy wherever he plays. The money will be there and pretty comparable - he didn't want to sign on for four years and be miserable here. If he was locked in here who knows if Smith is bought out for one thing.

To be honest I thought something kinda similar a time or two before. I just can't help but wonder what SVG told him his plan were that Moose reportedly "couldn't envision it" or whatever the quote was back in the summer. It basically alluded to Monroe having to see it to believe it. I'm thinking he told Monroe he would come into the season and feature Smiff to raise his value for a trade in order to move on to full time DrumRoe. And Moose went "Taken" on Stan and told him "good luck".

Anywho, it works out brilliantly because for the 2nd offseason in a row they can go over the cap and sign other guys then sign Moose.

This is not true. Signing Monroe to a 5 year max would not prevent us from doing the same for Drummond.

I hope not Monroe is not worth a 5yr max anything over the smith deal is overpaying too much.

that's how I interpret this...

(3) “Designated Player” Rookie Scale Extensions....
(c) A team may not, at any point in time, in respect of any current
or future Salary Cap Year, have Salary included in its Team Salary
for more than one Designated Player that was signed by the team
and more than one Designated Player that was acquired by the team
by assignment.

regardless, the pistons could offer Monroe a ton of money if they wanted to.

Operative words, rookie scale extensions. Monroe was a free agent last summer and will be again this summer. It's not an extension.

ok think I got it now. Monroe is a veteran free agent whom we hold the bird rights to. we can offer him a five year deal starting at 25% of the total cap with 5% increases every year. we can extend Drummond this offseason, give him the 'designated player' distinction and extend him for 5 years starting at 25% of the cap with 7.5% increases every year.

is that about right?

PS paying Monroe all that money makes me shudder

Id only offer greg 9 mill a yr

If he says no then adios

Id rather resign singler and jerebko. Then use the money on another big. Then max out drum drum

Not sure of the percentage raises, but what you'resaying is correct.

I'm not sure why you would think you would have any chance in hell of resigning him for $9 million/ year. Why not save your breath and not offer him anything at all. By the way, I would hope you would have enough in the budget for a competent back up center as well.

Strongly doubt that. He took the Q0 because our team culture during his time here was really poor, we lost a lot, and he wanted to have the freedom to choose his own destination without worrying about us being able to match an offer sheet.

Despite all of that, if we sustain our level/style of play now I think there's a decent chance that we may be able to resign him. He looks much happier than he ever has been as a Piston and I think getting rid of Smith and going on this little run has made everyone kind of reaffirm their faith in SVG as an executive.

9 mil per year wont get it done though...I don't think his impact is max worthy, but with guys like Kemba getting 4/48 and Avery Bradley/Channing Fyre getting 4/32, 9 mil per year will get us laughed at. You know in nba 2k where the FA refuses to negotiate if you lowball them with an offer? Yeah, that would happen.

If SVG gives Monroe the full 5 year max he should be fired right away.
