KCP and his shot selection ????

Post#1 » by Jackattaq » Sat Jan 10, 2015 9:07 pm

I started this thread because ever since being a rookie, I've supported KCP. I didn't want us to draft Trey Burke (Jameer Nelson 2.0). I liked that he is big and athletic for a SG and that he plays defense. I've always envisioned him being a Kerry Kittles type. The biggest issue I have with KCP is his shot selection. He went to Georgia and while there he was a scorer. He was the #1 guy in that offense. He got the shots, he took what he wanted. Now that he is in the NBA, doesn't he understand that shooting under 40% IS NOT GOOD? Why does he keep jacking up BAD SHOTS? He's a good enough athlete that he could slash to the rim a bit more, but all he likes to do is take a 1 dribble pull-up. He's just NOT GOOD ENOUGH to do that. He's a volume chucker in the mold of Josh Smith. He has no conscience about shooting. I've never been a believer that guys that are shooters should keep shooting, sometimes it's not their night. When you start a game 1-8, STOP SHOOTING JUMPERS. Find other things you can do on the court to help your team (rebounding, passing, deflecting passes, diving on the floor). Starting 1-8 last night gave ATL a lot of opportunities to run back on Detroit in transition. His bad shot selection led to ATL points. With KCP shooting like that I think back to what Kenneth Faried said about Josh Smith: "He shot them out of the game". It's hard to justify a sub 40% FG shooting taking as many shots as KCP does. Will he ever understand this? Is he gonna get any smarter? He hasn't shown me anything to make me believe he will. Don't take this as meaningless bashing of a player. I like what he brings on defense, he played Monta Ellis well in Dallas. I like how he stayed with Korver as well as he could. But DAMN man, STOP SHOOTING. Will SVG reel him in? Will he just "get it" someday? I'm starting to lose confidence that he will. That was BAD LAST NIGHT, and it's often BAD. He shoots too much and the shots he takes are often ill-advised. Will SVG get through to him or can we just expect to see him moved to the bench for a player that's capable of taking smarter shots?

For as much hate as Singler gets here, I think Singler is the player who does more to help the team win... but I do agree KCP has a higher upside its just a matter of whether or not he's going to reach that potential.

I hope you didn't miss the part where I put his FG% in as sub 40% for the season. That's a bit more than 1 game. Take into consideration that he gets a few transition layups on fast breaks because he's probably the fastest guy on the team on the break. Even with those gimmes he's only at 39.4% FG. That's NOT GOOD.

I've never questioned his shot selection until last night but that was a chuck or die situation so I have no problem with that either.

I don't really have a problem with his shot selection maybe take less mid range shots and drive more but thats about it. Last night was bad but he can shoot the 3 ball decent for a 2nd year player. I have no doubt he will become a knock down 3pt shooter in the near future.

Do you realize that if just one more his shots fall per game he's shooting 48% and averaging 16 points per 36 minutes, 17 if that shot is a 3?

He's got some chucker tendencies but I am hopeful that he will learn better shot selection in time.

We are always so sour after a loss. He's a little bit of a chucker. But it's his second year, we got to give him at least one more season. If he utilized all his strengths, and shot a little better he could easily average 20pts a game. He has all star potential if he could fully develop. I think in the stage we're at you got to just let I guy like that grow for at least 2.5 seasons before you make a too much judgment. Jodi Meeks is the perfect guy to push him young going into his prime as well. It's a nice 2 guard combo. Jennings and Augestine are a good combo. We got a number of good backup 3's . I think if we keep Monroe we could be an elite East team next year, and a elite team in general if we found that SF.

LOL it's one game lets calm ourselves..I doubt Stan lets him become a chucker.
Dude is 21 and learning his role on this team, so lets try and be patient and not run him out of town like Afflalo..kthanks

I never once said I wanted to run him out of town (a la Afflalo), I liked Aaron. I just stated that in a season and a third, he's shooting 39.4% and he's got no conscience about shooting when he can literally shoot his team out of a game. Do you think ATL gets out to a 23 point first half lead if KCP isn't 1-8 and taking quick shots that open up their transition game? I want him to play SMART basketball (that was always my gripe with Josh Smith, his dumb shot selection and lazy D at least KCP plays hard on D). I want him to know what is a good shot and what is a bad shot. He had a couple fast break pullup 3''s that you can get at any point in any game that he took and bricked bad. Even after he gets a make he air-balls the next shot a lot. He needs to stop shooting as many jump shots and he needs to drive to the rim a bit more. He's a very good athlete. He can jump and he gets up well. He needs to shorten up the shots (more than 1 dribble pull-ups) and either curl to the rim as a cutter more or get out in transition better. He can't just be just a jump shooter because it's become apparent, that's not his FORTE.

I'm pretty sure Stan knows what he's doing... and KCP gets as many minutes as he does because he's our best defender at the 2 AND 3. You have to take the open shots in Stan's offense, and KCP does. He needs to make more of them, sure, but not a ton more of them. I'd be patient.

KCP does have some gunner in him but I trust that SVG will reign him in

Yesterday was the first game where he had a Smith-esque chuck situation, and we had no answer when we were playing the right way, it was either chuck 3s to try to get back into the game or play methodical offense (which they took apart with their D) and continue letting them score.

He's got time, but he's just so inconsistent right now. But without a doubt, the most frustrating thing about KCP is ...that he seems to have more trouble knocking down open shots that he should be hitting, but seemingly shoots well when he's contested, pressured, or off balanced.

First year with a new coach to develope him.I swear we get one of these every month.Kcp is young, athletic, can defend, and its his second year.Have we not learned from the past yet,Look at AA,middleton, amir, knight (who iam not a fan of but has progressed wether people like it or not).I wouldnt say kcp takes bad shots either, just isnt very efficent yet.His ball handling seems a bit better this year as well, but he will never be the kind of player that takes people off the dribble,he will be a rip player, taking shots of the pick and roll, corner 3s,screens and wear his opponet down running around, with hopefuly elite defense.
