Our PG , Brandon Jennings

Post#1 » by Blkbrd671 » Sun Jan 18, 2015 11:40 pm

"I think just the fact that myself and Josh were the two biggest signings, the hype and expectations were on both of us," Jennings said. "But Josh plays a certain way and I play a certain way, so I think that was the most unfair part of it.
"He has a certain way they want him to play and I have a certain way I'm supposed to play. We came over here together but we're two different players."When Smith was released on Dec. 22, most believed Jennings was next on the chopping block, that he wasn't Van Gundy's type of player. And whether he is or isn't, only Van Gundy's actions will determine, but Jennings is clearly the most dynamic point guard Van Gundy has coached — and assuredly, Van Gundy's biggest surprise through this surprising streak.

Jennings has rated his time in Italy as positive, even if the basketball aspect wasn't as successful as many wanted it to be. The criticism didn't leave him hardened, but considering he's naturally more observant than trusting, he went further into his shell."People don't know that I'm into basketball," Jennings said. "I think people think I just play the game to just play. I watch a lot of basketball, a lot of old basketball. I really embrace the players who came before us."He also stays in contact with former Piston assistants Henry Bibby and Rasheed Wallace."I'm sure you'll have people who'll probably be like, why are you hanging around Rasheed Wallace?" Jennings said. "But he's also won in this league and if you pick his brain about basketball, he knows what he's talking about."

Jennings now takes teammates out to dinner on the road — and to what he calls "doing what's only right" — he picks up the tab as the team's highest-paid player. He credits his girlfriend, actress La'Shontae Heckard, with his maturity off the court and on, as Heckard is 10 years Jennings' senior and lives with Jennings in Metro Detroit — the first time, Jennings said, he's ever lived with a woman."That's different, for sure. It makes you grow up and think of someone other than yourself," Jennings said. "I've had relationships before but I've had to open up and trust more."That has translated to the floor, where a talk with Van Gundy about playing time led to him inserting Jennings back in the game before halftime — which has led to his devastating and often game-saving third quarters, like Monday in Toronto, where he brought the Pistons back with a 14-point output before they closed it out late

Now i know it'll only take 1 bad game from jennings and this board will want to trade him, or call him a chucker, or question his heart and love for the game. HOWEVER his play in January is not something to blow off. He very well maybe the best PG in the league in the month of January. I recall seeing BJ turn the corner last year just as Cheeks was fired, i am glad he's back to this point. Its nice to have a PG who knows what he's doing, last one i recall having was Billups.

I'm happy with our point guard. We can win with him. We are winning games without having the best FG% multiple times. We need a legit small forward and we have to worry about PF if Greg leaves. Our PG is doing well and I'll live with the rough shooting nights as he continues to mature. I've watched this team win three titles in my lifetime. We can win one with Jennings.

I'm extremely surprised he's playing this well. He still has the occasional off night, but he's been mostly solid and sometimes spectacular.

The biggest change, though, is the maturity level. I expect a slip-up or two along the way, but the young man finally seems to have grown up, at least somewhat.

Good to see.

I'm definitely coming around too him. I used too just see him as a cocky scrub. Now that he's playing smarter and better ball, That cockiness just looks awesome and gives us a tougher look at times. Slamming the ball down on Raps home court after getting revenge, Telling Pacer players you can't stop me and I might just get 50 again tonight. I'm loving it.

I'm starting to go from "This guy is good but not our future PG" to having an open mind and believing that this perhaps is not just a hot streak, but an improvement in confidence level, basketball IQ and leadership.

All things considered he's been our best player the past 13 games. Dre was dominant at the beginning of this stretch and looks like he's back to his usual self the past 2 games. Moose has been solid. All of our role players have had big moments. But Jennings has lead us and it's been incredible. If he had a better December I'd argue he should be an all star.

The attitude and heart he plays with is the personification of what it means to be a Piston imo. I hope he keeps it up.

I had interest in the Pistons signing him before FA started that summer. Always had talent, but not much direction.

The biggest thing, and this was said by several scouts and front office execs, is you can't win with both Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings on your team.

Jennings is a lot more confident and leading this team the way a PG should, both on and off the floor. With Smith playing the alpha dog, there was no chance for Jennings to shine. Glad Stan saw this and had Gores ear enough to make a Smith release possible without trading away assets or taking on bad contracts.

Now that we aren't looking at a top-3 lottery pick, I'm fine with keeping Jennings past his current contract. His maturity is improving and his leadership is proving important in this turnaround.

We haven't had a "attitude" since Rasheed. I love his attitude that at times seems to be trolling the other team, but at the same time is pumping our team up. A confident controlled brandon jennings is a scary player

I think for the board its a combination of , "we believe in SVG, and we believe he's a smart coach and GM", the fact that he see's jennings (and i am sure heard teh stories) and see's a legit PG and "coach" is very encouraging. I've always said you can't teach the vision that Brandon Has, its always been his decisions, and BJ seems to be finally understanding what he needs to do to lead this team.

For me, what changed my mind was his defense. He may not be the best man to man defender, but he gets a ton of pokes , steals, and overall makes defenders noticeably uncomfortable. Something i never thought he could do.

He has always had the talent, but never the drive to win. When he stated "I've never been on a 6 game winning streak before" its his way of turning that proverbial boy to man corner, and Aha! Moment.

He keeps playing with this confidence, and leadership, I feel very comfortable with him taking us to higher ground. Lead Mr. Jennings, LEAD.

He may get even better. He's been a top prospect since H.S. and used to actually be more of a pure PG before he randomly scored 50+ as a rookie. He kept leading a crappy ass Milwaukee team to the playoffs somehow, it was with raw talent. Really seems like something clicked for him 13 games ago. It's like he has been challenged to get better for the first time since he was a rookie and trusts his coach to improve his game + win.

His play has been surprising but in my opinion he is still a bit inconsistent. I hope I am wrong but he just doesn't seem like a PG on a Championship-winning team. I don't want to discredit his stellar play over the past 26 days but he still shows signs of sloppy play, poor decision-making, and an overall "streetballer" style of play.

Nevertheless whatever he has been doing since Smith's release seems to be working and I hope he can mold into a solid PG capable of leading the Pistons to the promised land.

Brandon has been doing a great job since the Smith dump. We have bigger needs that need to be addressed than finding a new PG. Small forward needs a huge facelift, and Monroe potential departure could leave a massive void in low post scoring.

I think he's been more than solid. What exactly is "streetball"? Who cares how he moves if it results in us going 11-2 and a 7 game winning streak?

He's definitely a starting caliber pg at this point. Last year my biggest wish for BJ was to put on 20 pounds. He might have only got to 10 but looks like those pounds have really helped him out too. If he gets 10 more he'll only get better. He's really talented so the sky is the limit for him actually.

I also believe in Dinwiddie though because of his size. As he gets stronger over the next couple years he's going to be nice. I really hope we can keep both and BJ can play off the ball sometimes in a 2 pg lineup.
You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.
Weaver & Casey, govern yourselves accordingly!

Case in point... anytime somebody wants to slow down BJ they just put a taller wing on him. Bigger guards either shut down Augustin or shoot over him.

With Dinwiddie you have the same skill, the same IQ, the same shooting, but a size advantage.

I'm still not sold on the kid. I guess I want to see how his next off-season goes and if he can leave all that soap opera in his past and mature as an individual away from the court.

Bonus points if he doesn't play in the Drew League.

Jennings would be a higher tier player if he could take a summer with a PG coach and learn to use his right hand/ learn to finish through contact.

I feel like his FG% is hampered by the high percentage shots he misses.
