Our PG, DJ Augustin

Post#1 » by Moses ShamMoses » Sun Jan 25, 2015 10:14 pm

Well now that we know Brandon Jennings is done for the year (at least)...Next Up: DJ Augustin. We all know the story. DJ came out of know where to lead the struggling Bulls to the playoffs last year while putting up great numbers. Here are some quotes from players/coaches last year:

"He’s big-time. Big-time professional, great teammate. He’s one of the best point guards in this league,” said Taj Gibson.

“He’s a good fit. He makes the right play all the time. The right pass, big shots. He can really shoot the ball. He’s been big for us,” said Joakim Noah.

"“He’s a very bright kid. He fit in right from the start. He was learning on the fly. He has great instincts, very good pick-and-roll player, very good in transition, he can shoot the ball and is a good leader, so we’re excited to have him. He’s done a terrific job and he’s a good fit for us,” said Thibodeau.

Fast forward to midway through his first season with our Detroit Pistons and most fans are writing him off as a disappointment (myself included). BUT is this really how the story is going to end, with disappointment? Or is this story just getting good? Can he save our season? With Jennings going down, will DJ pick himself up? WIll DJ get back his edge? This thread is dedicated to finding out and hoping for the best! Go DJ! Go Pistons!

He'll likely start getting 30mpg now and will flourish, he'll have some rough shooting games and some where he can't miss. The offense struggled with Jennings and I don't think DJ will help that, if we play tough defense we can still make the playoffs.

On one hand, DJ shouldn't come in and try to play exactly like Brandon. On the other hand, the entire Pistons team played better, and got easier shots, when Brandon would significantly push the pace (especially DrumRoe). So I think this is a delicate balancing act and it's gonna take everyone some time to adjust.

Augustin can be a good PG, but I don't feel he can shoulder the scoring load like Jennings did. Someone else needs to step up in that respect (KCP? Meeks? Singler?).

He's not the answer, SVG knows he's not the answer. Whats even more suprising is that SVG doesn't think dinwiddie is even close to being ready

I don't know man...18pts in the first half in his first game Post-Jennings.

1 game vs a half a season. We are losing this game btw. he could have 30 a night and wouldn't matter if we lose. we also had 8 TO's?

Still not confident in him he could go 1-10 and have 4 TO next game and everyone hates him again.

DJ had 8 assists to 2 TOs- he did a very good job taking care of the ball. Can't blame him for the failures of kcp/meeks/singler- these guys have been mediocre all season long offensively. Defensively DJ was horrible but Jennings usually is as well.

I don't expect DJ to look this good every night but I hope he doesn't hurt as when he plays like he has done most of this season

There is a big difference between starting and playing 35+ minutes a game and coming off the bench. His role has changed dramatically. I'm not saying he will be great or anything but there is some hope I think.

Agreed, i am just not getting my panties in a bunch because he had 1 good game in which we lost , he also was crap defensively. I'll give him 2 more games to prove me wrong, but i don't think he'll ever be decent defensively

Jennings has actually been decent on Defense, ifnot above average(stats may say otherwise). Jennings at the very least poked ball a way and created TO's. DJ does neither consistently. Additionally while DJ had only 2 TO's, his horrible sense of pace and possession lead to many dumb plays in transition. Exactly the same sh* he's been doing off the bench.

i think we can survive with him as our pg, i don't think we can win with his defense consistently

I'll say this. The Pistons will be alright. He is not as good as Jennings but he will do enough to keep this team rolling. I am more worried with guys like Meeks who can't hit for **** when they are out there.

From what I saw last night, SVG is right. Dinwiddie needs more seasoning.

I always liked DJ and was happy when SVG signed him, so it was pretty disappointing to see him struggle for most of the season. I guess he's one guy that plays better as a starter, because his time in Chicago was pretty crazy. I watched a lot of his games and he looked really good and then last night he looked great again.
His defense is a problem and that's where the team as a whole needs to step up. If they do that, like the bulls last season, we should still be in the playoff hunt.

1) With DJ running the show, everyone has to pick up their defensive intensity.

2) The biggest loss with regard to Jennings is IMO, he was beginning to take on a leadership role finally; something that has been missing since Billups was our starting PG.

I liked the DJ signing and have been disappointed with his early season play. But as others have said we should expect better production as a starter with more consistent minutes. Theoretically he should give us even better perimeter scoring, but we lose Jennings ability to drive the lane and create for others.

IF we had stronger perimeter play, somebody at the SF spot who could create off the dribble, then I think DJ would work better. But how much easier is he going to make Drumroes job? Will he get them the open looks they need? Will he be able to create for Singler/Meeks/KCP?

As far as having a backup capable of starting for a stretch of play I'm quite happy to have DJ... but asking him to be our starter for half a season? That's asking a lot. He might put up impressive individual numbers, but we're going to suffer as a team.

Overall I still think Defense is a faaaaar bigger concern than our offense though and that applies to guys 1 through 9. We need to get better. A lot better. We can't be giving up 30 pt quarters left and right and expect to win a lot of games.

not suprised he's a rookie.

The one thing i can't stand about DJ, is defensively our problems start there. and that problem is consistent
