WOJ- Draymond Green Interested In Signing With Detroit

Post#1 » by MotownMadness » Tue Feb 17, 2015 8:03 pm

In a looming restricted free agency this summer, Golden State's Draymond Green has a significant interest with pursuing an offer sheet with his hometown Detroit Pistons, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Green has loved playing with the Warriors and winning, and naturally Golden State is determined to find a way to retain him. Still, the Warriors' salary structure almost dictates that Green has to go onto the market and get an offer sheet for them to match in July.
If the offer is too rich to match, the chance for Green to return to his beloved home state – where he grew up in Saginaw and played at Michigan State in East Lansing – has long intrigued him, sources said. Green still spends most of his time away from the NBA in Michigan.

Within the Warriors, there's a natural hesitation to pay Green more than the below-max extension of Klay Thompson that starts at $15.5 million next season, and Detroit has the motivation and space to complicate matters. Politically, it would be easier for the Warriors to pay Green more than Thompson because of matching an offer sheet that would cause them to lose him, versus simply making the offer themselves.

Detroit will likely lose Greg Monroe to free agency, clearing the way to make an aggressive run at Green. For the Pistons to have a chance to pry Green away, they'll have to be willing to push an offer closer to a maximum contract – or perhaps a max – to give themselves a real chance to acquire Green.

For the Warriors to find a way to keep Green, they'll have to move David Lee and the $15 million owed him in the 2015-16 season. Ownership has instructed management in Golden State that it doesn't need to find a deal for Lee before the trade deadline, because the organization simply doesn't want to upset the balance and chemistry of a championship contender.

Nevertheless, there are teams with interest in working deals for Lee that would include them receiving assets – primarily draft considerations – for taking on his salary and those could be options for Golden State before the deadline on Thursday, league sources said.

the fact that he wants to play here is something, at least.

I said before that I wouldn't have a problem with the pistons offering him ~$15 million (if we lost moose), but now I'm not so sure.

I have faith SVG will do the right thing though.

EDIT: after seeing a projection of the future cap I am definitely for giving green his money.

This would be good. And a 2015-16 Max contract is going to be about 66% of a Max contract in 2016-2017, so we might as well make the offer.

He's our best option should Monroe leave.. He may even work better than Monroe playing next to Dre.. Forget his height, Green is an elite defender.. Something this team desperately needs.. He can also do a good job on offense.. Spread the floor a little.

If I had to choose Draymond or Greg for 15 mil/yr I choose Greg hands down. Draymond is the last guy I want to over pay for he is very close to his ceiling if not their already. Plus what position does he play SF or PF?

He's restricted, and W's owner Joe Lacob has been saying he'll match any offer for months. Since David Lee's deal is about to come off the books (1 year into a new Green contract... same time as the cap increase), I'm guessing any chances of him leaving are slim.

I'm pretty sure Monroe is close to his ceiling as well. Plus what position does he play PF or C? See how that works, don't just over hype one guy and downgrade the other.

I didn't downgrade him...Its was a honest question. We already know what Greg can do with the team not Draymond he could play terrible and then were suck with him. He plays for a top team we are far from that most role players play great for great teams and struggle for bad ones.

Green can play great defense on any team. Thats why you pay him for first and foremost. He would be a great fit and certainly the best Monroe replacement if he leaves.

Why didn't we draft him?

I really don't understand wanting to give a guy 15 million/yr to score 11 ppg. That's just nuts. I like him as a player, but he's a guy who fills a role, not a star.

I'd want Green at SF next to Monroe, not to replace him.

It seems like he just wants an offer so GSW can match.

I say sign him and re-sign Monroe. Green can play the 3 and backup 4.
If they match, get Middleton.

Unless Stanley Johnson or Oubre falls to the Pistons in the draft. In that case pickup Tobias Harris.

Worst case if we lose both Monroe and Green:
Jennings
KCP
Oubre
Harris
Drummond

The worst case is still a pretty solid core in 2 years.

Best case if we keep Monroe and Get Green and Johnson:
Jennings
KCP
Johnson/Green
Monroe/Green
Drummond

That's a contender within 2 years.
You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.
Weaver & Casey, govern yourselves accordingly!

Green<<<<<<<< Ben Wallace

Also, overpaying Ben Wallace didn't work out for Chicago either, so that is a pretty bad example overall.

Giving max money to role players is just a bad idea. Even with the cap going up, you want to save star money for star players.

That was Bens statistically best season in his 7th year playing almost 40 min per game. And no Green will never get those numbers, but elite defense at SF/PF with very good passing skills and 3pt shot making ability is worth the max in todays NBA. And he's 24 he can and will improve.
