What to do with Jennings?

This has popped up in a couple of threads, but I think this topic deserves its own.

The big question is what to do about Jennings.

Pros
He was playing great basketball and really leading our team during the hottest stretch of the year for us.
He plays super fast and helps our pace.
He is still very young.

Cons
He had a season ending injury and we're not sure how it will effect his speed and future effectiveness.
He has one year left on his contract and probably wants big $$$ (he surely felt he gave Detroit a discount even though no one else wanted him).

So do we:
Just play out the season, wait until next year and see how well he comes back?
Try to dump him now and plan on getting a PG of the future either at the deadline or this summer?

Keep him and hope for the best.. He was the beating heart of that impressive stretch of basketball.

The way I see it, modern medicine has come a long way and Achilles injuries are not nearly as damaging to a career as they once were. It's very much possible for him to come back at or close to 100%. He relies on speed and change of pace/direction quite a bit, so hopefully he gets that back. Kobe looked good physically this year and was able to get to this spots after the achilles injury. Jonas made a full recovery more or less from an achilles injury his 2nd year.

If he comes back guns blazing it'll be great for our team. If he comes back slowly, it'll likely mean that he wont get a big pay day and we may be able to resign him cheap. He's may not be the PG of the future, but he's our best option unless Dinwiddie breaks out next year (unlikely) or we get the opportunity to bring someone better in via trade/FA.

keep him.

Players come back from injuries... and Jennings skill is based on vision and shooting, not necessarily blazing strength or speed.

The best thing that the Pistons can do this summer is get a star or starter caliber 3 - and make sure the 4 position stays solid - so that positions 2-5 are stocked with quality players. I'm not worried about the 1 because pgs don't win championships, they just lead the team (unless your name is Isiah Thomas). If you get a strong 2-5, all you need the pg for is to stir the pot and direct the ship and score when they are open.

There really is nothing to do with Jennings at this point. We can't trade him, so the only option is to wait and hope for the best.

Realistically, nobody is giving us a star pg in a trade for anything we have at this point, so I don't think we have to worry about that. As usual, we take BPA in the draft. Unless we win the lottery, it doesn't look like there will be a lot of pg's around where we draft. There are no star pg's likely to hit the free agent market this summer.

At this stage all we can do is wait and see how he comes back.
If he comes back to the same level he was playing at before the injury you have to keep the guy. He was the leader the team had been missing for years. I would never have believed I'd get this point with jennings because I was never a fan of his, but he transformed the team once Smoove was moved. I still can't believe that transformation.
I don't think he'll demand too much money. I get the impression that he isn't valued too highly around the league and there's a very good chance he will start off slowly next season, so he'll have to take a bit of a discount.

The only pgs that I would trade him for are all the pgotf for other team, slight chance at dragic/lawson.So we should keep him.Honestly his ego/swag actually might help him fully recover on the mental side and if hes ok physicaly, then we shouldnt have to much problem with him being very close to 100%.

I don't see any reason to move on from him before next offseason. even after that I would be open to re-signing him.

We have all of next season too see where we are at with him and how he does. Nothing to really worry about right now, fortunately if this injury does effect him he's a 8 mil expiring and we can just move on from him next year if that's the case.

SVG is a PG whisperer, I for sure don't want to pay that position to much. If Jennings comes back and puts up 20ppg/7assist and leads us to the playoffs we may have to consider

No reason to move him now, that's for sure.

His value has nowhere to go but up when he returns next year and his contract isn't prohibitive or toxic to the point where it must be moved.

At 4:21PM this afternoon, BigLip started this thread.

About an hour later, Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN tweeted the Jennings & expirings for Joe Johnson rumor.

CONCLUSION: BigLip, is, in fact, Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN.

KEEP HIM. Team was starting to flow with him, he makes sense for the long term of this franchise. Contract isn't that bad. I'd play it out, get to his free agency and see how that goes. DJs a good fit as fill-in/backup.

DO NOT trade for Joe Johnson, that seems a "feeler leak". Where agent or franchise tries to build up interest in clinent/player.

Keep him.

Get him in there studying film and learning the game.

While his body is trying to recover from fail mode, engage his mind and help him grow.

Occupy him with learning the game and the system so he can come back with a far more cerebral approach to go with his natural talents.

Hopefully that will keep him off of social media and away from his beautician.

Keep him since he and Monroe kept this team intact post-Smith era. I also loved the chemistry he was building with the twin tower, Monroe was even running PnRs with him and rolling hard for an easy basket, which wasn't seen in a long time.

I hardly ever post anymore but I think most people will share my sentiment. Disclaimer: please play motivational music in the background while reading this message  NO ONE was more upset about trading for Jennings than I was. I thought of him as a selfish chucker with nothing but stats in mind. He proved me right up until the Smith trade.

There is no doubt that Jennings has talent. He has great court vision, a good work ethic, and is a great student of the sport. It seems as though he stopped being selfish and started being a dominant leader. I still have issues with his off the court remarks as it still shows immaturity but on the court he seems to have morphed into a player that could have his number retired, if he comes back at or near full strength. The players believe in him, he is vocal in the locker room and he has turned me into a believer, supporter, and big time fan.

I believe he has the will to comeback and lead this team and as long as he knows (internally) he's going to make a full recovery, I believe he will. Don't give up on Jennings. Give him a chance to show you he can recover and lead this team to victory!!!

Wait and see really seems to be the only option. I can't imagine getting anything for a injured player that isn't an expiring deal.

It's for the best anyways. He really could become/was becoming a great player and key cog for this team. He was playing like an actual PG, not just a chucker looking for his. Combine that with SVG being a PG whisperer, and I think it'd be silly to dump him right now.

Even if he never plays again, he has value for us as an expiring player. Silly to say, but it's true.

Pray for healing and a comeback that leads us to the question, is he worth a mega deal.
