SVG: Caron's opinion "pushed me over the top"

Post#1 » by Blkbrd671 » Tue Feb 24, 2015 9:32 am

"It meant a lot to me," Van Gundy said. "It meant a lot to me what everybody had to say, but Caron was the final piece. You can do all the intelligence you want, but you don't know anybody that's been in the locker room with a guy and Caron had been in the locker room with him. He's been in the locker room here and a lot of other places, so he knows good from bad and he also knows me and what I'm going to like and not like. So it meant a lot when he said he what he thought of him as a player and what he thought of him as a worker. It really pushed me over the top."

"I told (Van Gundy) all the pluses, because there wasn't any minus," Butler said. "I said he'd be a great addition. He's a guy that can get into the paint. He's definitely got, not a star mentality, but superstar potential. He can really help us. He brings a different feel to the court."Butler saw Jackson battle Russell Westbrook in Thunder practices and knew he was ready for a broader role, just as he saw another young point guard push a superstar daily at a previous NBA stop.

"I saw that with Eric Bledsoe when we were in L.A., same type of thing," he said. "Chris Paul was challenging him night in, night out. Chris Paul, one of the best guards of our generation, and Eric was holding his own, so I knew he would prosper in that Phoenix situation and I see the same thing happening here for Reggie."

I love it. He trust Caron, it is nice to know that he will trust his players that he gets to know.

I love the Bledsoe and RJ comparisons in practice, you could see the glimpses in games with both at times too

On an aside, I bet Stan picks up Caron's $4.5M team option for next season, unless he tries to re-negotiate it down to maybe give him a second year for a little less money - say decline the $4.5M option but sign him to a 2 yr $6M deal or something.

i don't know about that, i would have thought as close as KD was to Butler(via MVP speech) that okc would have kept him. they didn't, i think it'll depend on the status of the locker room.

Don't we have the ability to trade Caron at 4.5M, and the other team can cut him (or more likely pay a buyout - not sure of the details). If that is so, if a team was on the luxury threshold, a contract like Butler's would be ideal to trade for.

I like that SVG brought Butler in for veteran leadership and then he is willing to trust him with such a decision (even if it was a low risk move in the end). If we had to judge Jackson based on what was going on in OKC, I think a lot of people would have preferred not to deal with the potential drama or problems. He has seemed like a good guy so far here and I've enjoyed his play.

While going toe to toe with Westbrook in practice. So much for him being trash, huh.

OKC fans said Reggie was trash. But Caron watched Reggie and Westbrook go toe to toe in practice and stated that Reggie held his own. Therefore, making the former-sonics-teams fanbases claims even more pathetic.

I understand the OKC fanbase is salty because things didn't end well as he looked to make his break from the team. The fact is, Reggie outgrew the OKC backup role. The time battling Westbrook in practice and replacing Westbrook when he was injured showcased Reggie's ability to play at a high level.

His coming out party was the performance he put on against the Grizzlies in the playoffs last year, it was a clear indication that his potential could not be confined to giving Westbrook minimal breaks in action. He's going to be good for Detroit, real good for Detroit. I hope we can retain him & Moose as we build for the future.

^ Not disagreeing in the least, but SVG is THE man, both literally and figuratively. In asking for Caron's opinion and giving it the appropriate weight, he showed true management and leadership; it's no coincidence his players seem to both love and respect him, 'cuz that's the way he treats them.
