This thread is inspired by a article i just read. While its mostly discussion SVG rating, i would like this thread to discuss

1.) what mofn roller coaster of a season this has been for our team and board.
Seriously our board has gotten bi-polar. To be fair, everytime majority of us are ready to quit on the team , they give us serious hope. Typical f* detroit team

2.) Do you think SVG should have been ranked where he was and where would you rank him

But the more I looked at it, the more I realized that it was an appropriate ranking this season. Has Van Gundy really been better than mediocre this season? While the Pistons have had multiple personnel upheavals, they’ve never really been able to dig out of the horrendous grave they dug in October and November.

I mean, who on that list do you think has done a worse job than Van Gundy? I think the chances of Van Gundy having the Pistons competing in the East are greater than Jason Kidd and Milwaukee or Jeff Hornacek and Phoenix out west, but predicting the future is silly.If we’re ranking coaches today in 2015, Van Gundy may be appropriately rated.

He’s due credit for righting the ship (at times) throughout what seems to have been four different seasons. The Josh Smith Era was a debacle, but Van Gundy appeared the right the ship after releasing him in December.The Brandon Jennings Era was definitively the most fun part of this season. Had the Pistons kept up that pace — and had Jennings not ruptured his Achilles — Van Gundy is probably ranked in the top 10 and a distant Coach of the Year candidate.The rest of the season has been a mixed bag. D.J. Augustin was fun for a period, and the Pistons were breathing with him, but the first 10 games of Reggie Jackson were horrendous. But, as if this season could go any differently, the recent uptick with Jackson has made this team entertaining and fun, again.

Does DJ really count as an "era"?

How many games was it? 10 or so?

I feel like Pre Smith, Post Smith/Pre Jackson, and Post Jackson are the three eras.

But hey, I'm splitting hairs on a particularly meaningless aspect of the post. Its definitely not easy to evaluate SVG's season with the number of transformations this team has gone through this year.

The Jennings era was the most fun I've had as a Piston fan since they held off Shaq and Wade in 2005. There's no doubt that if BJ stays healthy, we're figuring out first round matchups right now.

SVG has been good, ranking him around the middle is about right. He's had to unwind Dumars' mess and deal with an injury to his best player at the time. That's a tough hand to be dealt......

I just basically do with Josh 5-23 without 22-21 or something like that, if we win just 5 more games with josh we are in what the 8th seed? I'm glad we didn't idk if SVG would've released him

It definitely was pretty incredible, like something straight out of a movie script...we drop 1 guy and then go on an incredible streak. Jennings going off for 30+ points several times and looking like an elite PG, Drummond and Monroe dominating together, the emergence of Tolliver, setting a franchise record for threes against the Cavs, DJ Augustin turning into Michael Jordan after he got a tech and taking down the Mavs nearly by himself in the 4th with 17 in the quarter, and of course my favorite moment of the streak, the comeback and game winner against San Antonio:

The camaraderie and chemistry looked like that of a championship team, if only just for a minute in time. Reggie/Dre/KCP have been oustanding the past 5 games and along with our lotto pick + cap space + SVG at the helm our future looks bright, but I can't help but wish Jennings never got injured because that team was so much fun to watch and so easy to root for.

As far coaching goes there is no doubt in my mind SVG is elite, up there with Pop/Thibs/Carlisle.

"DJ ERA" was certainly beginning when he got traded. it was just product our scheduled games so close to the break. Yes your splitting hairs, but valid point.

i really don't think its as hard to evaluated SVG's season. As a GM, look at our team when SVG inherited the team, and our team now. Its quite a contrast. And personally i still maintain we got a hell of steal in RJ for players who weren't part of our future. WE got the Law for Mitchell (steal), drafted Dinwiddie(steal). Unconvientionally released smith which lead to better team play. Being able to see that is truly underrated.

As a coach however, i think its little more concerning. THe W-L don't tell the whole story and at times i feel SVG game plan wasn't "the best way to win". I'll leave it at this, any coach taht can get all his pg's to play at a allstar level deserves some recognition. Ironic that we've needed a pg for so long since Billups and we've seen 4 this past season
