Let me get this out of the way, I like the trade, but doesn't that leave us with ONE small forward? This trade only makes sense if he has other moves already planned. Stan has got to have something up his sleave. You don't do this unless you KNOW a certain player is going to be available at the #8 spot, otherwise that is risky as HELL.

Speculating? There is another move coming, that has already been planned, and this move only makes sense if Stan is planning to move up, to ensure we get the SF we want, or he has some sort of deal, for a certain restricted SF already lined up.

I just cant make sense of trading our only starting SF.

He is going to look at the SF option in free agency none of the restricted ones tho. If we do get a solid one say Carrol, then we could draft a player like WCS, if available and hope he does develop a jumper. It is going to be a fun off-season in any case, it already has been one

If it was, then the season was a wash anyway and not worth discussing until at least trade deadline. A lot of talk of Kristaps is going top 5. Let's say Towns, Oka, Russell and Mudiay are locks to be gone by 8, that means we have 50% shot at Winslow and Mario.

Like I said before, Orlando is the gateway to our happiness. If Kristaps goes 5 (or before 8) it's almost a lock to draft Justise or Mario and no matter what Stanley will be available.

I don't want him atm either, but say we sign a quality SF for 2-3 years this free agency, his upside may be to good to pass up, i'd probably still take Winslow, Porzingis, Hezonja, and Johnson over him tho. Basically if we sign a quality SF in free agency, it would make our draft choices a little different imo

We still have Quincy Miller and Cartier Martin who can play the 3, not saying either one of them is our next great hope at SF, but there is guaranteed to be a quality SF in the draft and free agency still. I'm sure SVG has a plan, but maybe not a specific plan. He has more flexibility than you've alluded to.

You can't count on rookies contribuiting right away anyway certainly not as a starter. Starting SF has to come by free agency or trade.

KCP has done enough for us to warrant looking at him as a part of this core moving foward. This year's play will be the ultimate deciding factor. However i don't think we just "trade away" KCP, i think he's highly valued by the team, doesn't he lead the team in MPG? if we trade KCP, i do believe its because the return is ridiculous.

If free agency is the route Van Gundy wants to use to address small forward and they don't sign DeMarre Carroll then Danny Green might be their best option left assuming the restricted free agents are out of the picture. He's not an ideal fit/size for the position but I think they could get away with it. Green and Caldwell-Pope would pretty much be interchangeable wings.

The alternatives are less than underwhelming. I would take Green playing slightly undersized for the position rather than... Mike Dunleavy? He's in the conversation for the second best free agent small forward. Aminu is nice for what he brings to the table but I don't think he would work as a starter with Detroit's other pieces.

I'm all for signing Danny Green. I don't think PF is out of the question with the #8 pick even with the trade. We're in a better position to develop Porzingis or Turner slowly (or Looney in a trade down if SVG smells a jackpot).

Plus there is a sign and trade possibility for Monroe. Jennings may be on the block. Caldwell-Pope could also be shopped if we signed a player like Danny Green. There are so many options this offseason. It begins.

Yeah I doubt Van Gundy views the 8 th pick as some immediate starter and savior. I could see him going after Caroll for sure and developing a 3 or 4 off the bench. If it's playoffs we want then you want some experience at the 3 this season.
