Detroit Pistons Voting Big Board - #3 Runoff

Post#1 » by coordinator0 » Tue Jun 16, 2015 11:56 pm

We had a tie for the 3rd player on Detroit's big board with Okafor and Porzingis each getting 9 votes. We will have a runoff vote between the two to make a decision. If there's a clear winner by tomorrow afternoon I'll put up the poll for the #4 player ASAP to make sure we have enough time to get a full 10 in before the draft.

Who's your pick between Okafor and Porzingis for the #3 player on Detroit's big board?

Point of clarification - I think Okafor is the better player and prospect and I'd take him to then trade him, but Porzingis is the better fit for us if trade option is not to be considered. So my vote should be Kristap here correct?

Whatever you prefer. Voting for Okafor if only for the thought that he's the better trade asset is perfectly acceptable.

Yeah, he has to be the better pick FOR THE PISTONS, whatever that might mean for us.

I don't think you draft a guy for the purposes of trading him unless you've already got a deal lined up, and I'm going to operate under the assumption that we don't. Porzingis is my guy.

Eh, I don't think there's anything wrong with making a big board with prospects being valued as assets as well as fits for your team. With that said I agree with the premise that you don't take a guy without a trade in mind though. That's too risky and if it doesn't work out you're stuck with a guy that doesn't fit and that's huge. Even if a deal comes along later down the road there's a good chance that the rookie who was taken has been devalued.

I went with Porzingis here because I fee like he has every bit of the upside that Okafor does but he actually projects to be a great fit next to Drummond and in Van Gundy's scheme.

I wouldn't say there's anything wrong with it. Just merely stating my approach to the question.

I think Porzingis has worlds more potential than Okafor. Okafar can't protect the rim, can't shoot outside of 12 feet or so, and he's very unimpressive in regards to pick & roll defense. Add that to his below average explosiveness and really...how much more is there for him to improve? He can refine his post game and try to add a legitimate jumper, but I don't think he'll ever be better than Al Jefferson. And Al's a pretty good player, but in this current NBA it's very difficult to build a team around a guy like him.

I've seen him compared to Cousins, but Cousins coming into the draft was a better athlete, better defender, better shooter, better ball handler, and better passer.

This isn't to say that Porzingis is a sure thing, because he's not. He has more bust potential as well to go along with that high ceiling, but I could live with taking that risk vs. taking Okafor. If this was between Porzingis and Towns, it would be a different story.

Okafor's ceiling seems so low to me and his floor seems decently high, that he'll probably just be a good starter at best. I never was ever impressed with him, at all. Maybe watching players like Al Jeff or Monroe spoiled me, since that's all I ever saw out of Okafor. And then he struggled against Kaminsky in the Finals that I just laughed.

I for sure would take Porzingis over him 10/10 times.

Porzingis is pulling ahead of Okafor. If the gap is still there I will get the next poll up in a couple of hours.

Your reasons are precisely why I voted for Okafor. If you were the Pistons what would you do?
