Mario hezonja's 18pt finals performance highlights

Mario played 25mins hitting 5/6 3's!
It will be interesting to see what affect this has on his draft stock. I like Hez as a prospect but for me, I really hope this gives us a better chance at Winslow. I personally believe the offensive side of basketball is easier to develop and if Winslow improves his shot he can easily be a perennial 2-way all-star. 6 more days!

Re: Mario hezonja's 18pt finals performance highlights
Mario Hezonja became the youngest player to score 18 or more points in an ACB League final on Friday, nailing 5-of-6 shots from behind the arc.

^Last shot being a desperation 3. This isn't the first time he's shot lights out like that either.

Doubtful IMO. Hezonja is a better shooter but WInslow is better at all other facets of the game and unlike Hezonja doest take plays off on defense. Hezonja is lucky that he is still playing ball while NCAAers have been done for months, allows for him to rise, which is IMO good for us since it gives us a better shot at Winslow.

How can you guys watch this and not be extremely impressed? He is 6'8 is a superb athlete, can shoot from anywhere in the gym, can handle in isolation and pick and roll and is just an effortless smooth basketball player. You're telling me a 6'8 guy that is maybe the best athlete and shooter in this draft class, can run the pick and roll effectively against one of the elite teams in Europe and you arent satisfied?? He is 20 years old. Him and Oubre are not comparable at all as players. You think Oubre would get a second of playing time for this team? I do also love Stanley Johnson and Justise Winslow as prospects as well. I think they both have the natural talent and drive to be very good NBA players, and wouldn't be mad if the pistons took any of the 3. If we were to take a Kaminsky, Dekker or Oubre over any of those 3 Id be sick.

Its probably because there is so much hyperbole in this post. Hezonja isn't even close to the best athlete in this class nor is he the best shooter. Hezonja is a good athlete and a good shooter no doubt but some ppl are really overrating these aspects of his game. The guy is shooting 38%, which is a solid percentage but not even close to what guys like Booker and Russell are doing.
Other things I don't like about Hezonja, is that he he shies away from contact, doesn't get to the FT line and is only an average FT shooter. Hezonja isnt good at creating his own shot or shots for others, has a shaky handle, makes bad decisions/is turnover prone, he takes plays off on defense and doesn't play with consistent effort on that end. And while some are impressed with his cockiness, I see it as a liability in the lockerroom because it doesnt match up with is talent level. Not to mention that he has a history of pouting when things don't go his way and gets down on teammates. Every player has flaws but IMO, Hezonja's flaws make it pretty unlikely that he will be a star in the NBA.
Hezonja is ok to me but he's getting way overhyped.

Also, one game does not a player make.
If anything, there is too much hyperbole in your post. Its totally fine not to like certain prospect, but at least get your facts straight, dont make things up so your argument can look better.

Read some scoutings reports buddy, look at some stats or try to find more game tape.
Everything you wrote reeks of ignorance when it comes about him.I think we should switch roles.

Re: Mario hezonja's 18pt finals performance highlights
If I'm ignorant, I guess draftnet and draftexpress are too huh
Draftnet.com
Draftexpress.com

Draftnet.com
He still could work on his body strength to better withstand contact in the NBA ... He lacks a solid mid-range game, which is the area where he struggles the most ... He’s effective in ISO situations, but he tends to need a screen or generally a situation that creates an advantage for him, since when he’s forced to create a basket from off the dribble, he is less effective than other elite prospects ... Despite his improved shot selection, he still tends to look for his shot instead of finding an open man when the defense is good, even though he has solid passing skills ... His off the ball defense is not effective enough, since he lacks focus and positioning, furthermore he tends to be too aggressive in the closeouts leading to useless fouls ... This could be considered his breakout season concerning his performances, but the consistency is still a sticky point, especially from one game to the next ... He has worked a lot on his temper, but his fiery nature and cocky attitude is still his trademark, and can get him in trouble at times ...
Draftexpress.com
He can be turnover prone when he puts the ball on the floor as his handle is a bit rigid, and often tries to get creative instead of drawing contact and forcing whistles when he ventures inside as his extremely low 1.6 free throw attempts per-40 minutes pace adjusted average reflects.
Questions also remain about Hezonja's ability to defend consistently. Those questions don't revolve around his actual ability to defend as much as they're based on his sometimes non-chalant approach on that end of the floor. He tends to run very hot and very cold in terms of his intensity as his worst moments are just as glaring as his best ones. Hezonja could stand to get stronger, but his combination of size and quickness seemingly give him the potential to hold his own if he's committed to being a factor on this end of the floor. The question is, in a long 82-game season, where minutes will be handed to him much more easily than they were in Europe, will he feel the desire to get in a stance and compete at max intensity on every possession?
As we've noted in previous reports one of the more significant ongoing concerns about Hezonja is his demeanor. His body language is poor at times and he seems to get down on his teammates. Though he's become far less demonstrative than he appeared at the junior level, it will be fascinating to watch how his swagger, ego and unlimited self-confidence fit in on whichever team opts to draft him. His mentality could pay huge dividends if he reaches his lofty potential down the road, but what kind of growing pains will he experience early in his NBA career?

I used to watch him since he was 16 year old, nothing she described matches with what i saw and most of the other scouts.Seems like she handpicked things that went in her favor.
About athleticism and shooting, Mario is amazing athlete, he might not be top shelf elite but NBA level athleticism will never be a problem for him.Shooting-wise i think he is either best or close 2nd in his draft class, calling him just good shooter is IMO understatement.Singler, Afflalo,Barnes are good shooters, guys like Mario and Booker are dead-eye shooters. You can check scouting reports on that, that word might pop up.Talent-wise guys like Givony and Schmitz from Draft Express consider him as 3rd most talented player in this class right behind Towns and Okafor(you can listen it on Givony podcast).NCAA 3 pt line is almost ft and a half shorter than EL one, but nobody takes that into consideration either when it comes to shooting and range.
Mario doesn't shies away from contact. He struggles finishing through it in traffic and thats area he should work on, but his role in Barcelona is primarily spot-up shooter. He attacks the rim when he gets space. He attacks closeouts by stepping in and pulling up for open shot because paint is usually packed because of Barcelona offensive style which favors bigs over guards.I feel like i am writing this for 50th time already but here i go again, last time Mario played against players his age was 3 years ago, he led Croatia to 3rd place on FIBA tournament averaging 20 ppg, 7 reb and close to 8 FT per game in elimination stage, shooting 90% from FT line(not bad for "average" FT shooter).
Spoiler:
His defense has been addressed so many times, and nobody questioned that part of him need serious work. His struggled with consistency on defense because he never had consistent minutes or role to begin with.To understand Barcelona defensive system you have to watch more than few scouting videos of Mario Hezonja. Its amazing defensive system once you get to learn it, it can even help inferior defenders look good, but Mario never got a chance to learn it and play through mistakes or defensive lapses unlike college prospects.
Those "attitude issues" have been talked about so many times by guys which follow basketball overseas(including scouts), and whole immaturity and pouting thing was last season news.He is much better this season compared to last where he used to argue with refs, show that poor body language and other things written in those scouting reports. He doesn't get down on his teammates, never had any off and on court issue with any teammate of his, or locker room ever suffered because of him.If you followed ACB playoff series vs Unicaja where he barely played, he was constantly cheering up teammates, doing best Patty Mills towel-waving impression and celebrating every basket on the bench with rest of the team.I see him as either star or bust in this draft full of role players in lottery(few exceptions aside), there is no middle in his case.
I have feeling like i wrote post this big for nothing and as much as tomorrow, i'll be hearing that he is blackhole cancer player which has no business being in NBA.

He also went 1-4 on 2s. However, he is a fine prospect. Clearly, he has some knack for shooting. He's smooth and fairly quick. Since there are no combine-like measure that I can find, Just how big/long or athletic he is comes down to an educated guess. There's no denying he can be lazy/inattentive on defense. He is also a prideful player and I expect he'll improve. I'm just excited that the Pistons are going to get a pretty good prospect. Johnson, Winslow, Hezonja; I'm good.

Re: Mario hezonja's 18pt finals performance highlights
i can say with the utmost confidence that his performance in this game will have zero impact on how teams view him as a prospect.
that said, any player can look good when they are making their shots. you still want to see them do the intangible things besides that and hezonja showed little in this game. if we had a full video breakdown of his game i'd be willing to wager that he cost his team more points than he contributed. this video of him just reinforces what I knew of him. he's a good shooter, everyone knew that already. offensively besides shooting he shows little, and he also shows next to no awareness on either side of the ball, which he displayed in the video.
i'll guarantee (not that anything is on the line) that we won't draft him even if he's available. SVG/Bower are too smart for that.
