Greg Monroe Plans To Meet With Knicks, Celtics, Bucks, Lakers, Blazers
JUN 28, 2015 7:42 PM

Greg Monroe said five teams have shown strong interest as he enters free agency.

Monroe said he will meet this week with the Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Lakers and Portland Trail Blazers.

“(He and agent David Falk) are definitely looking at all our options,” he said. “You can see the trend is everybody’s taking shorter deals right now. So, most likely, I might take that route, too, and when the new deal kicks in, get a longer-term contract.

“I’m looking at a two-year deal plus an option” to become a free agent.

Monroe admits he is out of the Detroit Pistons' plans.

“Stan had smaller teams in Orlando (Magic) years ago,” Monroe said. “Dre is like Dwight Howard. So Stan wants to put good players around him. The team has different plans, and I respect that. I don’t want to be anywhere I’m not wanted.”

Monroe basically saying Stan doesn't want him.

That last sentence is pretty passive-aggressive for a dude who balked at doing anything last offseason that might result in him tied to the team any longer than necessary.

I've been relatively easy on Greg since I never really blamed him for wanting to leave, but that last sentence, pinning the divorce on the team and saying he doesn't want to go anywhere he's not wanted, really rubs me the wrong way.

Eh, Monroe's not being passive aggressive at all IMO- hes just stating a fact. SVG wants to play smaller, has already named Ilyasova the starting PF- no room for Monroe. SVG made his choice, he wants to build the Dwight Howard Magic team with a poor mans Dwight Howard in the middle.

Of all the teams listed, I hope he goes to the Bucks.

Stan's comments have been about making his first priority calling Reggie Jackson, and then his next priority going HAM after two wing players... I can see why Greg would be a little salty that the Pistons pretty much have moved on from him, but at the same time a large offer was made last summer that he didn't want to be tied down to so its just as much his fault.

I was with him 100% until the "I don't want to be anywhere I'm not wanted" last sentence. I also think what he said was true.

I never took issue with Greg's wanting to leave. It was a less than desirable situation for him here in a lot of ways. Its just that, after taking the QO (the strongest message that he wants out he could have possibly sent outside of simply stating it), it would have been nice to see him take some ownership over the decision, or at least not specifically pin it all on SVG.

I actually like his fit in Portland.

Yea. We should've traded him.

I liked Greg but with Dre at center he never had a future here. Greg is a center not a power forward, he also doesn't have a jumper which makes him a terrible fit next to Dre imo. I was disappointed in him for not developing his mid range game at all, he actually took less mid range shots last year than the year before I think. I hope him the best wherever he goes but I can't say I will really miss him.

The writing was on the wall once he signed the QO. I don't like the 2 yr + PO 3rd year trend (if it happens) because there is no commitment to the team from the player.

I wonder what their S&T offer was, and if Monroe had agreed to go there last season. Stan screwed the pooch last season by not trading Smoove and Monroe - had to pay millions to get rid of one, and the other will walk for nothing.

You guys really gave him the benefit of a doubt? He's wanted out for a while now. I guess some have to hear it to believe it. Nothing wrong with that, but I'm already over this character. Detroit's headed towards a bright future with or without him.

My thoughts exactly. He wrote his own ticket out of town, my only regret is that we weren't able to get any value for him in a trade.

Wow! Outside the 2015 Warriors, that small ball gameplan never wins championships. This guy SVG is taking away all my favorite players and turning this team into the new Magic(just like folks had warned me :nonono: ). I guess I got Monroe signing with the Blazers or Knicks.

SVG, your bloated a*s better have us .500 this season man. :-?

Have to say the Monroe situation really seems to have been mishandled by SVG. At some point you have to get a sense for what his future is with the team, if any. Bottom line, we should have gotten something for him.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I am in agreement with this statement. The handling of Greg Monroe was the first major misstep of SVG's tenure, with this draft very likely proving to be the second.

SVG needs to hit a home run this offseason in the trade/free agency department. Getting Ilyasova nearly for free was a good start, but we need more.

Van Gundy just got here last year, Moose was already an rfa at that time. by all accounts he made Moose a respectable offer, Moose chose to sign the qo instead. at that point he didnt have much trade value. I dont really see what Van Gundy could have done different. the Monroe situation is on Dumars, he should have traded Monroe 2 years ago, after the Smith debacle, when Moose still had some value.

Probably one of the more bigger missteps of Stan's reign.

A S&T for literally anything would've been nice than letting him go for free. But Dumars is the root of all this anyways.

Going to miss watching him in a Pistons jersey, but it's decided that this team will move on without him. Dre is our future, and we need the right pieces around him if we ever want to get out of this shthole that we're in.

With that said, I wish the best of luck for Greg. Really hope he has a good career.
