Where will Reggie Jackson rank among point guards this season?

Post#1 » by Laimbeer » Tue Jul 21, 2015 1:29 am

Poll aboard.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I consider him to be very capable of at least 18-9-4 with solid defense. And I'm aiming low here; I have pretty high expectations for this guy.

Top 5. Those Wall comparisons won't look so foolish this season.

1. CP3
2. Curry
3. Westbrook
4. Irving

I don't see a reason why he can't outplay the rest.

I say top 15 could be more like top 13 or 12 I think his defense will hold him back.

The PG's I can easily say I would rather have ahead of him for next season are:

Chris Paul
Steph Curry
Russel Westbrook
Kyrie Irving

PG's that may or may not be better:

John Wall
Eric Bledsoe
Damian Lilliard
Derrick Rose
Mike Conley
Tony Parker

I think his numbers will look great because of the system and his usage but for his first full season as the starter, I'd be happy with top 10.

He can finish inside due to his length (7' wings)... this also helps defend dribble pen & the passing lanes.
The #1 question is can he shoot well enough to keep a defense honest.
I put him down as 6-7 with a real chance of being a top five the following year.

If things go well, top 7-8. Nothing he can do will ever make him better than CP3/Westbrook/Curry. Kyrie, Lillard, and Wall are all also very likely to be better. Then he's in the mix with Bledsoe, Conley and and Rose if he plays well.

People are seriously underrating Bledsoe... That dude is a stud. There is a reason people call him mini-lebron.

IF Jackson somehow outplays Wall I will be amazed. Wall's defensive ability and court vision alone put him in a class of his own.

Are people forgetting about Lowry? HE is pretty damn good too...

Then we got Lilliard.... I haven't seen him play too much. I know he can shoot, but we will see how much of the offensive load he can handle without Aldridge.

My top six are pretty much set with:

Chris Paul
Steph Curry
Russel Westbrook
Kyrie Irving
Bledsoe
Wall

7-10

Lowry
Lilliard
Conley

11-12

Parker (age)
Rose(injury concerns)

He could easily be an average starting PG in this league based upon the above and he is maxed out! I really dont know how most of Detroit Pistons fans think this was a good deal. He has everything to prove, but still got paid big. It was an excellent deal for him. For the Detroit Pistons, we better hope he will be top 5, because he just got paid like one.

Eh. Right now he's tied for 6th among PG salary. Without question he'll drop two spots over the next two years. He likely won't even be paid top ten money only halfway through his deal.

Jackson’s numbers for the last 16 games (nearly one-fifth of an NBA season) were even better: He averaged 20 points, 11 assists and five rebounds. He was shooting 39.1% from three-point range, 48% overall — dominant numbers as he became a triple-double threat.

Voted 6-7. I think top 5 is possible

Yeah, he definitely didn't get paid like a Top 5 PG. His salary will be league average for a starting PG in two years. The top guys will be making 25+ million while he's still at 17.

We'll see. The defense and outside shooting need to be better to crack the top 8 or so. That said, playing at the level he did last year for the Pistons, he's already above average and therefore isn't overpaid (or won't be in a year).

Lol at being average! The top 12 named are all exceptional!

Being merely very good is now average?

When there is that much talent in the league you have to have a dude that is at least ranked 8-16 to compete every night - pretty sure RJ fills the brief

I'd be so happy if Jackson turned into the next Harden, and solidified himself as a top 10 player in the entire league.

Ambitious? Of course. But SVG is a wizard with PGs, and Jackson could be on his way to some monster stats in this system.

His assists I expect to be inflated. He's a Top 10 PG in pick & rolls statistically already let alone with Drummond setting the screen. At any point he can throw it for a lob, shoot the mid range, drive in, or kick it out for the three. I love the way he turns the corner on the screen. He's no Nash that he'll have 10 options after the screen but I think he'll have 4 options and it's refreshing. We haven't had that type of PG in years. I'm excited. I can see him as a Top 10 guard next season next to Bledsoe and Lowry. Doesn't take much when you got Dre and 3 shooters. SVG made Nelson look amazing. Even Jennings looked good playing for him.

This is another factor all of the Jackson haters are overlooking. SVG got DJ freaking Augustin (a solid backup) to put up big numbers between the Jennings and Jackson eras. RJ will feast this year and will average 18 and 8 at least. He will be a top 5 or 6 PG this year stats-wise.

He isn't maxed. And as someone pointed out, his contract is worth 60% of what a guy in his situation can get next summer.

Exactly this. People are going to learn this year that basketball is 50% fit and opportunity. In the role he has, just on offense alone Rj will produce like a top 7 pg and if he buys in on defense and becomes one of the Guard Dogs (tm) with KCP and Stanimal he could crack top 5.
You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.
Weaver & Casey, govern yourselves accordingly!

At least one tier above Reggie:

Paul
Westbrook
Irving
Wall
Curry
Lilliard

Produced more than Reggie:

Conley
Teague
Lowry
Bledsoe
Dragic

Produced more than Reggie but have age/injury/head concerns:

Parker
Lawson
Rose
Jrue Holiday
Rondo

The young guns (I put Reggie above these guys)

Payton
MCW
Mudiay
Russell
Exum

The Question Marks:

Kemba
Rubio
Isaiah Thomas/Marcus Smart

Middling groups our PG situation is clearly better than:

Knicks
Nets
76ers
Pacers
Mavericks

Right now I put Reggie anywhere from 14 to 18. There are too many guys who've accomplished too much to realistically put Reggie in the top 10 at this point. The exciting thing is looking at guys like Lowry, Conley, Teague, Chauncey, Dragic they all really popped during their age 25 season. Lowry and Dragic in particular really mirror Reggie's early career where they showed flashes as backups and flourished when given the reigns.
