I love Tolliver and all....

Post#1 » by Canadafan » Thu Sep 3, 2015 1:33 pm

But wouldn't it be nice to have him and Joel as our 3rd stringers, and trade Jennings and Granger for a PF that can split time with Ilyasova? A guy like Taj Gibson would be perfect. Doesn't mind being a bench player. If Ilyasova gets injured he can easily be the starter. It helps us clear the logjam of extra players we have. It helps Chicago because of Rose....sorta lol.
Other than Gibson, which PF could we get that would make us all feel a little more comfy at the PF spot then we do now :D
Like I said I luv Tolliver, but he's nothing more than a 12 minute a night player imo. And I know Baynes and Morris can play spot minutes at PF, but if Ilyasova goes down we need a legit player there. Sooooo who else?

Faried? Maybe a 3team deal where Jennings goes to Denver, Taj to Detroit, Faried to Chicago and other parts mixed in. Or we just deal straight up with Denver and get him.

Fit > Talent, Tolliver is the perfect backup PF for SVG system with his 3pt shooting and energy off the bench , unless a significant upgrade comes along. We don't exactly know what we have got in Baynes and Morris yet, certainly not at PF.
Also why would Chicago trade Gibson for a worse and more expensive player.

Just looking for someone that can conceivably play half a game at PF. There's no way Ilyasova can or will play 30 per game. I don't see Tolliver as more than a 12 per game guy.
So other than Taj or Faried who's out there?

Ersan, Marcus, and Tolliver will all see time at PF. The 1st two regularly. Why trade for another one? Why worry about Tolliver? Hes a good fit, and fair money who really fits.

PF is our weakest position wouldn't you say?

Plus I'd rather Morris just focus on playing SF. Him and Stanley should play there and only there

I think a mix of Ersan, Tolliver, Morris and Baynes should be able to hold down the spot this season, but I want SVG to at least draft a PF next season or trade for a young guy to groom into the eventual starter. I don't think faried fits SVGs system.
Our PF is our weakest spot and there's no long term option on the roster now.

Agreed. I'd just rather speed up the process an get that guy now. Jennings is the one that will get that guy. Why wait? Just my opinion.

In what bizarro world is Jennings going to net us a long term starting PF?

TBH Jennings isn't getting us a young starting PF.
Guys like Gibson would be an immediate upgrade, but he's getting up there in age.

Patience will be key for SVG. Ersan will be a good fit for the next year or 2 and hopefully in that time SVG will find his replacement.

I honestly can't think of a young guy that fits SVGs PF style AND is available.

If Jennings is fully buying in on the 6th man role, his value is much higher to us than he would return in trade right now. If he's shown he's 100% healthy and a contender needs a PG in February it may be worth it to move him, but as far as trades go he's currently worth little more than an expiring contract.

No way that package nets us Taj or anybody of that caliber. Anyway, agree we need to continue being patient. We aren't competing for a title so need to hemorrhage value. So far Stan has done a good job of being opportunistic while making incremental improvements to the team.

I know most people won't like this, but don't be shocked if we wind up playing small ball with our 4 out system. A Shard or Peja type at the 4 is even more feasible in today's league than it was 5 years ago. I kinda half expect Stanimal to eventually evolve into that versatile forward for us in a couple years with a more pure 3&D guy taking his spot at the 3.

Yes it is... it's alright to have a stop gap for now... however we may be running out of assets to acquire the long term piece at PF... this is why Jennings is so important this year... we need him at 95% by the deadline.... we can't look at cap space as a viable option once Drummond is locked up.
Draft picks?... yeah, I suppose they could find another sleeper but not likely if the team performs like a lot of us think they will.

Is it possible Morris is the young guy who will be groomed to be the eventual starter?

IF you believe that Stanimal will be ready to take over as the starting SF before this season is over then isn't it possible that Marcus moves to PF?
Dre, Morris, SJ, KCP, RJ...it fits the system

We've got reasonably steady and proven vets at the four. We have a rookie and a guy who admittedly has had his issues at the three. I think the three is more dicey. I wouldn't mind one more three and Marcus can always slide and play some four.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I think it's likely that Stanley Johnson will push for the SF spot, and Morris will slide to the 4, once Ilyasova breaks down. Probably RJ/KCP/SJ/MM/AD will be the most used starting lineup this season at the end. MM will slide to the 3, and Toliver will back him up. I'm not counting on Ilyasova for over 40 games, his history says he's too fragile. I'm not sure that he's actually better then Morris anyway.

Personally I would kick the tires on getting Markieff here, he has a great contract and he's a player on the rise, probably cost too much and I don't think they would be interested in Jennings or dumping Ilyasova already. I'm pretty sure SVG is looking into it, but most of the proposals I've seen for him are very high.

I'm not sure Jennings can get you a guy who is as good as Tolliver.
