Detroit Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy didn't need to see much of Steve Blake.
After a concussion limited the veteran only to Friday night's exhibition finale, Van Gundy said Blake is the likely backup point guard when the Pistons open the regular season at Atlanta on Tuesday night.
Blake will be the first choice when starter Reggie Jackson needs a break — despite second-year point Spencer Dinwiddie putting up solid performances during the latter part of the exhibition season.
"He's just got a lot of experience," Van Gundy said of Blake on Sunday. "I like the way he moves the ball, passes the ball...

Experienced backup pg > inexperienced backup PG.
Hopefully DInwiddle gets D-league time to build himself up.

No surprise there. Blake is a solid PG, Dinwiddie is wildly inconsistent.

Yeah after that Atlanta game it's painfully obvious blake is the primary until Jennings gets back. One thing I don't like is that Erson will indeed start. I know Stanley is a rookie, but I really like morris at the 4, and johnson at the 3.
We'll see how it evolves over time though.

If Tolliver is getting decent minutes, I don't think you'll see that combo a lot.

I think it'll be similar to Monroe's rookie season. Even though there's a case to be made for Johnson to start, he'll have to prove he absolutely should be starting, and after a month or so of coming off the bench, he'll move into the starting lineup and never look back*.
*Unless the 2nd unit really needs him as a primary ball handler, but he'll play close to starter minutes.

I honestly don't see Tolliver seeing alot of minutes. Before preseason I said that Erson would sit first, and morris would slide over to the 4 with johnson coming off the bench as the first substitute. That's exactly what happened.
I'm sticking with that. I honestly think Stan is going to limit Erson to around 25 mpg so that sub would probably happen at about the 3-4 minute mark of the first quarter.
All this depends on foul trouble of course. One of our forwards gets into foul trouble Tolliver will see minutes.

Blake was terrific in that last atlanta preseason game. Pretty easy call with how average spencer looked all pre season. Blakes jumper looks super broken with a huge hitch in it, but hes always been a good shooter over his career so think he will be fine as a backup for 10-15 mins

Not really surprising. That is what we got Blake for - to hold down the fort until jennings gets back. He can run an offense and knock down 3's. His best years are well behind him, but he's still lightyears ahead of dinwiddie.

Diniwiddie reminds m of that 2k euro step animation where the player loses the ball ouT of bounds.

No surprise. Dinwiddie has proven that he just isn't ready to play consistent minutes. Blake on the other hand has played solid minutes since he's been in the NBA to the point where he has won the praise of Kobe Bryant. I like this decision. Maybe Dinwiddie will learn from Blake.

I'll take Blake over Dinwiddle. He's a proven veteran and pretty reliable as a shooter. Not to mention, he brings toughness on the court and that's what our young guys need.

Blake will be have many small nagging injuries throughout the season so Dinwiddle will have plenty of games where he will be the primary backup, so all is good.

He can have as many as he wants as soon as Jennings gets back.
If Jennings comes back anywhere near 100% our bench is absolutely nutty. It really is.

Blake has his legs more than most players since he missed a big chunk of the pre-season, but he looks like a genius out there, so I'll take it.

Blake is a classic 3rd stringer at this stage of his career - can't guard a pylon so you can't depend on him for many minutes but he's a good wily vet in a pinch and in spot minutes. Hopefully we get news that Jennings is ahead of schedule soon though.
