Drummond waiting to sign....why??

There's gotta be a a different reason. Something we're not thinking about. They sold him on waiting. He doesn't do that unless there's a really really good plan.
I guess maybe Horford is it. But maybe, just maybe, it's someone else(Durant?!) lol.
I dunno. It's a bit risky for Drummond to wait.

So Detroit has $13M more to spend in the off-season. But in order to be at all a draw, we need to be in the play-offs. It's not really a risk for Drummond in that he probably has a ridiculous insurance policy this season. But his doing this sorta handcuffs the Pistons in making trades, in that if he signed this past off-season than we could trade expirings for long term deals - but we can't do that now because that would be "spending" Dre's money now - and Dre likely was sold on the wait to sign plan with big game free agent hunting in the off-season.

Ya exactly. So that's why maybe getting Markieff for non expirings like Meeks and Bullock is pretty much our only move

I don't think he agreed to wait contingent on big game hunting this offseason, I think he agreed to wait because the contract he can sign this offseason is significantly bigger due to the cap increase, with the added bonus that he might help us have some more flexibility.

It would've been the same, assuming he signed a max extension which is written in the contract as 25% of the cap the first year of the extension.

That said I think it's pretty simple. The Pistons wanted more flexibility this coming off-season so they didn't sign Drummond to an extension. There doesn't have to be an agreement (as the team can just never offer an extension without the player's say) but I do think there is an understanding. I have a strong feeling that "negotiations" were more the team trying to get Andre on board with it and not have hard feelings.

Non issue, he's already publicly said verbatim "I love it here. I plan on being here"

I know he's not going anywhere....just wondering who we're targeting next summer.
And the only trades we make this year are with non expirings

I find it hard to believe that he waited to sign just so we could get Ryan Anderson lol. SVG Had to have sold him on Durant or Horford

Like Monroe?

They are absolutley playing with fire. There's always the possibility of the team going south or Dre having a falling out with SVG, etc. They should have let the guy sign whatever contract they could legally give him, whenever he wanted. This caliber player doesn't become available to Detroit very often.

Until he's signed it's something to worry about.

I've never heard Monroe say that. He was always on the fence. He would say he liked it here but was going to explore his options.

Agree, this is not a Monroe situation. And we make the playoffs this year, we got some cap space to get another key piece, we are looking good, and Drummond will have no reason to go elsewhere.

I think it was pretty evident the whole way that Monroe may not re-sign. There was a glimmer of hope when we traded away Smith and started winning and thought we could make the playoffs, but then Jennings got injured of course and our playoff hopes ended. And the year before when talks were drawn out so long him taking the QO wasn't much of a shock...

For Dre there is no reason to come out and say so bluntly that he's staying, unless he plans on staying. My question to you: If you are an elite center that is HEAVILY reliant on athleticism, would you pass up over 100 million guaranteed over 5 years only to take the QO and risk injury?

Seems unlikely, but at the end of the day I was surprised Monroe did it. He doesn't rely on athleticism, but he risked injury and losing a truckload of money.
