Should Stanley Johnson give up #3 after season now that it's retired?

Should Stanley Johnson give up #3 after this season out of respect for Ben? Now I can't imagine Ben wanting him to do so - I could see Ben saying "keep it young fella" and similarly I could see Stanley deciding to keep it saying "it's something I'll have to live up to every day; a challenge to be worthy to wear it". But it is retired now, and if you were Johnson - with no apparent affinity to the number before choosing it - would you give it up and choose a new one?
Similar with Reggie and #1 later in the season as well.
I bet both keep the numbers for the length of their Piston careers. I'd like to see both give them up though.

I'd like them both to swap, but Wallace told Stuckey to keep the 3 so I can't see him making a big deal about it no.
I can't see Billips making reggie change either.

Dre gave up #1 to Billups when he was here - wish he didn't given I HATE "0" as a jersey number. Dre could have been Optimus Prime to Calvin Johnson's Megatron.

I'm of the opinion that 3 and especially 1 should've been off limits. Both Stanley/Reggie should aim to be so good that one day maybe they are worthy of having their own unique numbers retired.

i hate how we seem to handle jersey numbers. both players should choose new numbers to carve their own niche for our history anyways.

We should ask Hilliard to switch numbers so that we can retire that number out of spite for Josh Smith.

Yeah, but rather than hang it in the rafters we bury in ground sown with salt!

No. have it buried in the Detroit River.

I'm pretty confused about what the point of retiring numbers is if neither of them change after this season. Like, there's literally no point if they keep their current numbers. I don't have a "problem" with it. Nor would Chauncey or Ben. It's just a massive waste of everyone's time if it doesn't have some sort of meaning.

They should both keep them. I like that great (or just good, for some teams) players are commemorated. But, I'm not a fan of retiring their number. It's a mess in Boston due to some many players receiving this honor.

with so many great teams, they deserve those numbers to be retired. it was a different thing back in the day too. not many guys get their numbers retired now.

What if Stanley or Reggie keep their number and have a career that gets "their" number retired? Is there a precedent for this?
Let's remember Vinnie had his retired so it's not out of the question.

It's pretty simple, no one else can pick to wear those numbers, not even the people currently wearing them if they were to change could go back to the number. They just aren't forced off of them if they're already there.

As Chauncey said in his presser after re signing, Dre is building his own legacy and his # might be in the rafters one day. Something along them lines anyway. Probably another reason he changed the # too

Earl Monroe and Dick McGuide on the Knicks both are retired with #15.
I don't think this really is a big deal.

I'm interested in the reasoning behind the votes for Reggie keeping #1 and Stanley giving up #3 - is it a prediction that left up to the respective player that Reggie would choose to keep #1 while Stanley would give up his number?

I think it is simpler to just look at it as their jerseys are being eternally commemorated rather than their numbers being retired.

They slap the new player's name on the banner with the same number. It's just a piece of cloth afterall.
