Present and Future outlook

Post#1 » by ComboGuardCity » Thu Feb 18, 2016 7:00 pm

In the past 48 hours, we acquired 2 very valuable assets. However, the shape of our team is now very murky. How do you see our "playoff" lineup once the dust settles? Further, looking past this season, how do you guys see our future lineup?

NOW:

RJ 32/Blake 10/SJ 6
KCP 32/Thorton16
Morris 32/SJ 16
Harris 32/DMO 16
Drummond 32/Baynes 16

MINUTE BREAKDOWN:
1. RJ:32
2. KCP: 32
3. Morris: 32
4. Harris: 32
5. Drummond: 32
6. SJ: 22
7. DMO: 16
8. Baynes: 16
9. Thorton: 16
10. Blake: 10

Next Year:
RJ 32/Augustin 16
KCP 32/Johnson 16
Johnson 16/Morris 25/Harris 7
Harris 25/DMO 23
Drummond 32/Baynes 10/DMO 6

MINUTE BREAKDOWN
1. RJ: 32
2. KCP: 32
3. Johnson: 32
4. Harris: 32
5. Drummond: 32
6. DMO: 29
7. Morris: 25
8. Augustin 16
9. Baynes 10

Marcus is going to have to accept less minutes in the future. It'll be interesting to see how he responds.

Mortise as playing way to many minutes along with KCP so I like we are coming out of this deadline with a lot of depth.

Motie is going to get paid regardless this summer, committing +12m$ per year for him is scary with his injuries plus the fact that he is more of a C in today's game and you already got Baynes.

I guess Aron could be traded? makes not much sense honestly, I'd have prefered a comboG in this year's draft with the pick you sent to HOU, to balance the roster If I were a DET fan.
Not hating the move, I like DMO, but not really seeing the fit as of now, he doesnt space the floor consistently well enough, same problem you have with all of your wings honestly, and defensively he cant play the 4, and Drummond's softness doesnt help.

I think Stanley needs more than 22 minutes, take away 4 minutes from Marcus at minimum.

There's a chance Blake isn't part of the rotation. Thornton can handle the ball and so can Johnson and all they need to do is score for the bench along with a great passer in DMO. I don't think Blake is part of the rotation right now.

If Thorton can adequately play some PG for us, then we are golden. That free's up minutes at SG for Stanley, relieves the SF/PF glut.

Good point about Morris, I was thinkig the same thing.

In a span of 2 days, suddenly Marcus Morris has 2 new HUGE threats to both his role and his minutes. It was always better for Detroit that he become a bench player, but this new adversity he's facing could result in some attitude and sulking. Also, the fact that Stan got 2 guys at PF that aren't his brother could affect his attitude

Morris is a bench player with a bench contract. Both of these things could make him steer away from being the good soldier he's been thus far. The contract factor especially worries me in the future....

As for the main point, sure there will be minute allocation issues. But Stan is stockpiling controllable assets. When you have a stock of team controlled assets on decent contracts that will always find you having potential to consolidate and make a move for a bonafide difference making star.

I really think that's what's going to happen. It's either that or they'll get a guard in an hour or as a FA. I'm not sure if Blake can keep up with our team lol

Yeah he's too slow on defense, he's old, i'd rather have a longer term solution at backup PG.

I think Motiejunas eventually takes all of Baynes minutes. He's going to cost a bit to resign so we'll need to use him more than ~20 mpg.

All this added depth will lessen everyone's minutes, but I think that is a good thing and something the players will be happy about it. Marcus has been complaining about too many minutes, not too few.

Baynes is only signed through next season, with a PO the following season for roughly 7M, so odds are really good he opts out the third year.

I don't think teams will throw big money at Motie because of his back issue - I could see him signing a 2 year deal to prove his health and then hit the free agent market at 27yo.

I'm not convinced we changed all that much in regards to our playoff outlook this season. I was really hoping to see a Chicago / Atlanta sell off and neither of those happened. Bosh being out long term might sink the Heat, but Markieff could be a really big piece for the Wizards, who are lurking right behind us. I expect it'll take some time to gel with the new pieces, making me really worry about that pick protection.

Going forward, I think we are in a much better spot. This summer we were staring at a whole bunch of cap room and minimal odds to land an impact player. Harris is likely better than anyone we were going to land and if D-Mo works with us on resigning him, we'll still have enough cap space to add a backup PG/Combo guard (Vazquez / OJ Mayo / Chalmers type)

Well, in a couple day period, we went from having no depth to potentially having too much. We have 4 would-be starters for 2 positions. It's a good problem to have, but SVG the coach has some juggling to do. Not only does he have a talent overload at those spots, but his offense so far has been 1/5 dominant. Something is going to have to change to get all these guys enough touches.

You know, the only thing I really ask for is for my team to be interesting, and not in a trainwreck kind of way.

The Pistons are very interesting now. I'm happy.
