What would you offer D-Mo before free agency begins?

Post#1 » by Laimbeer » Fri Feb 19, 2016 12:35 pm

We extended Reggie before he hit the market. Would you attempt to do the same with D-Mo and what's your best offer?
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I expect SVG to do the same, try to close a deal early, I'd say likely about 12m$ per, maybe 3 years, with some type of PO

Um, won't this depend on how healthy he proves to be and how well he actually fits? Could be anything from let him walk to match whatever.

He has zero incentive to sign on here before testing the new market. I don't think he signs a 4-5 year deal, I bet 2 with a PO 3rd to try and hit UFA at 27-28 rather than at 30.

I would be happy if it's at 12 per. I'm just scared some dumb team is going to max him out if he plays well and is healthy.

Well, with the new cap, I think an average NBA starter or super sub will make around 14-15 million. Considering his injury history (and assuming he roles through the season without any problems) around 12 sounds fair.

Based on what I know right now (which isn't close to what we'll know at season's end)....id says 4 years 50M.

I really believe it's going to revolve around his health. He fits in perfectly here as he's 25.

Talent wise this kid is off the charts and an absolutely perfect compliment to Andre. If he stays healthy our starting lineup is going to be;

Jackson
Pope
Harris
DMo
Andre

D'mo is really underrated on defense and can move really nicely on switches.

I can't even Hazzard a guess about numbers but if he fits as well as I hope and is healthy I see very little reason Stan won't keep him here.

If Stan gave up a first, then he plans to keep him.

Stan is definitely matching any RFA offer - zero reason not to. If he blows up here and gets a silly offer, you still match it and then trade him in December or next off-season if we can't fit him into our salary structure, and get back better than a mid-first in a bad draft.

I think DMo is more a 7th man though, backing up both PF and Ce for us long term. Baynes probably opts out after next year, as his third year was a PO and he'd get more money and longer term by opting out.

I would hope for 36/3 if it gets to ridiculous with the $$$ I would hope we could sneak in some kind of TO in there.

Of course he's an RFA, so it probably won't be up to us

anything under $12M im comfortable with. if we can get him for $9M per that'd be great. id love to get a deal done before just to avoid any drama. his health can change a lot tho.

^ Kinda ...

Just checked the dates; we extended Reggie on July 6th, but we made the Mook trade (which effectively spent our available cap space) on July 3rd. It's not like Reggie was on the market for very long, but technically, he could've signed an offer sheet in those first five days. Of course, we had sent out EVERY signal that we were gonna match any offer (ironically, the same way ORL did with Tobias!), so I don't think anyone seriously tried to steal him. I fully expect SVG to at least try to use the exact same playbook — make it clear we're matching anything for D-Mo to scare off suitors, spend what cap space we have immediately, and then lock up Motie (and then Dre, obviously).

I know it's silly and a loophole and "gaming the system," but our transactions literally HAVE to go in that order — spend our raw cap space first, then go over the cap to re-sign our own free agents. Doing it any other way flushes away ~$10M we could spend on another solid bench piece.

I mean I was pretty sure Reggie was worth $48 to $50 million over 4 years (12 to 12.5 per) and he got much more so I'm probably underestimating on an estimate of $48 million over 4 years. I think anything more and you'd have to question why we would give up a pick for him when we could have just went after him as a FA.

He's getting at least 4/60 from someone this summer unless he suffers a major injury.
