SVG is Great at Basketball, But

Post#1 » by pistontr » Thu Mar 17, 2016 3:16 pm

he needs criticism. orlando team was very underrated defendive team, and his coaching was underrated too. I have to say these because I don't want to sound like a hater.

but, when he talks about defense, he always brings effort issue. that's too easy, too cliche. apparently, this team has structural problems about defense and he hasn't tried to solved them.

and he brings players who are average shooters at best. and who is justin harper for god's sake.

so keep blaming SVG for players' lack of effort.

he's doing a poor coaching job not benching players who collects stats but don't play with heart.

Harper actually played well when he played. He hit two big three's one game. He isn't on our team anymore tho

This coaching staff does an awful job of adjusting to other teams. If we're getting scorched by a PG, it's gonna happen all game long. If our offense looks extremely stagnant, we're gonna keep running the same plays all game long. If one lineup is doing well, we're gonna take them out and watch our backups blow the lead. It's the same story every game.

Seen that on another forum and thought it's kinda correct. Sometimes he leaves the backups or starters in to long and they lose the lead, kinda like last night. Don't get me wrong SVG is a way better coach than what we had, but he needs to be getting some blame. I'm really afraid he might lose this team with the way he calls out his players too. Maybe not the whole team, but individual players.

This thread is just full of ridiculous statements. Some of you would be clamoring to get Lawrence Frank or Mo Cheeks back.

Finally, this far in? Today, March 17, the Pistons are in the playoffs. The last time they were in a similar situation was the last time they made the playoffs, which was long ago. From the middle of the lottery to a true contender in a single season? I admire your optimism, but you guys might be in danger of appearing a little impatient. SVG and Co. have moved in the right direction.

Honestly think the roster in itself from the 1 to even the 5 at times have problems with effort, defense, and creativity within the structure of the team. I also blame SVG for going in on Reggie whenever the defense collapses and he just fumbles the ball from the inside blitz instead of reseting the play and kicking it out to the weakside. Harris is mostly exempt from this since all he's been known as his entire career is a player that's like Carmelo with better off-ball movement.

In fact, our offense isn't very great at all. A lot of times, it just boils down to a simple two man game that has since been scouted to death as evidenced between our hot start in the beginning to our record now. There's a lot of problems with this team but also our offense is pretty garbage too despite the rankings which also semi-explains the inconsistencies in our overall play.

1 - Mook & RJ had never started an entire season until they came here

2 - except for 2 players SVG has brought in every player in the last 18 months!

3 - offense is simplistic due to roster turnover as much as anything else

4 - doesn't matter how well prepared our coach & FO is - players gotta execute

5 - lack of experience & maturity as individuals and as a unit impacts their ability to execute

I could go on and on but I'm too busy enjoying the fact we no longer suck monkey spunk to be screaming about our ills

This thread is stupid. Our players have shown inconsistencies throughout the season when it comes to effort and the results show. When they are locked in, they can beat anybody. When they're off, anybody can beat them. It's growing pains of a young team. SVG has done a pretty amazing job of building a young core with tons of upside and fit well together.
It's frustrating for fans when the team doesn't show up, but if you don't like it please feel free to watch tape of the previous 5 years before svg got to Detroit. I'm sure that will make you feel much better.

Lots of misguided excuses being made in here. "At least we don't completely suck anymore" is a ridiculous way to assess this team and the way it's being coached.

I don't pretend to know as much as SVG does, he obviously is getting paid to do the job he's doing for a reason. I just hate when he's set in his ways...sometimes it doesn't matter who's playing well, his rotation is set and that's what he's going to do it seems. As I've said before, 29 other fan bases probably complain about the same exact thing from their coach. Coaches prefer veterans....every team has that one old guy that's playing over some younger dudes and it drives the fans crazy. We just happen to have two....Blake and Tolliver. Blake has his moments when he's pretty solid...Tolliver has been crap all year. He was really good last year though, so its understandable as to why he has SVG's loyalty. I just wish we had replacements for them...that's all.

Of course you could criticize small things like not putting Dre back in the last 2 minutes yesterday but he's done it before in wins and no one said anything. Maybe its his way of trying to get through to Dre that he has to put in more work on the free throws...idk. I'll live with that though. I hate living with his 4 bench players on the court at once and I hate living with his obsession with Blake and Tolliver.

Stan was the exact same way in Orlando. Overplayed his starters and liked his veteran backups. As far as defense goes, in Orlando they were a top 5 defense mainly because of Dwight and Shard. They were both excellent defensive front court players.
