2016 NBA Draft: Pistons select Diamond Stone in latest ESPN mock draft

The Detroit Pistons select Maryland freshman center Diamond Stone in ESPN's latest mock NBA draft.
The Pistons, currently slated to select No. 18 overall, select Stone because "[he] is a low-post beast who can score in a variety of ways. As he continued to work on his conditioning, he would have a chance of being a very nice complement to Andre Drummond on the Pistons' front line.
That comes courtesy of Chad Ford, ESPN's NBA Draft guru.
So what kind of player is Stone?
Upside Motor has a quality analysis of strengths and weaknesses published in January, which means it's reflective of his actual play as a Terapin. A nickel summary of their analysis includes that while young and raw, he's a beast down low who favor's "bully ball" to get positioning under the rim.
They also highlight his emerging jump shot and terrific free-throw rate for a big man as signs he could eventually be a pick-and-pop threat. He's mostly a below-the-rim player, so he won't wow you with blocked shots, but he is allegedly agile enough to guard some power forwards as he learns the nuances of the game.
The most interesting takeaway, and a red flag, is that he is a particularly poor rebounder for a big man, and his deficiency is masked somewhat by his penchant for rebounding his own misses on the offensive end.
The bottom line from Upside Motor has me thinking a lot about former Piston Greg Monroe:
Stone is an 18-year-old center prospect with great hands, good length and above-average agility for the position. While he tends to rely on his strength to play ‘bully ball' in the post, he is an excellent free throw shooter for his position and has the potential to be a reliable threat in pick-and-pop actions. Defensively, he projects more as a strong man-to-man defender than a true rim protector, though he has the physical tools necessary to be effective at slowing the pick-and-roll. The biggest question mark at this point is his motor, which has a tendency to run cold for long stretches of time.
Whether or not he is able to put forth consistent effort on a play-to-play basis will be the biggest determinant of Stone's success at the next level.
This has me skeptical about how much sense he makes as a complement to Drummond, as indicated by Ford, and more a developmental backup at center with less positional flexibility than might be envisioned by those thinking about the peak of his potential.
Other players available to the Pistons in the mock draft include Timothe Luwawu, Demetrius Jackson, Wade Baldwin, Dejounte Murray and Thon Maker.

We need to put a real power foward next to Drummond. Of course if he can hit the midrange/3pt ball it'll be a help but we need a proficient post threat.
You'll see next year how dominanting okafor and embiid will be together. While both can shoot, both okafor and embiid would prefer to just kill you in the post.
Dre isn't anywhere near as skilled as those 2 but hes a manchild with the boards. adding a real pf next to Drummonds intangibles would put us up there in terms of top front courts

Im cool with stone, sabonis, and Davis. I also believe we should consider rolling the dice on thon maker. If we got thon, i think all piston fans get what they want. He's 7ft 1, he can shoot 3s and midrange, can run the floor great, has very good ball handle/moves for a giant, blocks shots (especially help side), plays passing lanes, fast enough to guard stretch 4s such as a draymond and long enough to contest a tall pf such as dirk.
Ive seen him play live as a sophomore and I can tell you now that the kid DOES indeed lift weights. Hes gained a good amount of weight from when i seen him to his announcement mix.
Don't buy into the whole, "he aint play college talk". This guy maker is basically porzingus with slight differences. Maker is faster, dribbles wayyyyy better, shorter by 2 inches, and a more versatile defender. Hes truthfully one of the top 6 (simmons, ingram, hield, dunn, brown, maker) and we should draft him and laugh at the teams who pass on him

I'm sold! I didn't know who he was until there was a thread about him on the general board then I youtubed him and he looks pretty amazing. If he could be a Porzingis or Greek Freak for us it would be awesome. His build looks like a young Kevin Garnett though, hopefully he can put on some weight.

If we started him next to dre, teams wouldn't be able to double dre at all. Put thon in a p&r with reggie instead of dre and it'll open the court up for everyone.
I think hes a good mix of zinger and giannis. You put the ball in his hand and he'll dribble up the court at the same speed as giannis but giannis has serious point guard. Giannis can play the 1, 2, 3, and smallball 4. Thon can play 3 through 5. The difference between zing and thon as stretch 4s is this, if you decide to take zingers shot away, he'll either take 2 dribbles and pullup or he'll straight line drive of the pump fake. Thon on the other hand, will cross you, euro step, and or hit a spin move on you. Both zinger and thon try to finish strong and WILL dunk on you if you contest them
We need to steal this guy mann. There was a basketball camp earlier this year which thon attended and gorgei deing from Minnesota was a instructer. While gorgei was helping thon on some moves, you just see thon maker towering over gorgei whos a legit 7ft.

Listen, greg monroe is a bum n we all know that. Does that mean every pf who 6'11 or weighs more than 245 is a monroe clone? No it doesn't. Monroe effected yall so much that the idea of a normal sized power foward doesn't register with yall.
If were seriously trying to win a championship, we need to get a regular sized pf. You'll see that if we play Cleveland 1st rd (who we could possibly beat but not favorites too) kevin love will destroy tobias/morris but not for a lack of effort. As trash as love has been, he still good enough to expose any team putting a 6'8 guy on him (except draymond?)
Even a player like sabonis, whos a lefty like monroe would be good in Detroit. This dude monroe was EXTREMELY SLOW, HAD A 1INCH VERT, COULDN'T CREATE HIS OWN POST SHOT CONSISTENTLY DUE ONLY HAVING 1 MOVE, AND WOULD HAVE TO CATCH THE BALL RIGHT BY THE BASKET TO BE EFFECTIVE (caps to stress how bad monroe is). Sabonis and dre would have detroit as the top rebounding team in the league.
Nonetheless, everybody hop on the thon maker bandwagon now before we miss out on the steal of the year

big differences between maker and porzingis. the first is the jump shot. maker shot 32% from the
high school 3-point line. not only is that mediocre in high school but the nba line is way farther back. for reference, porzingis at least shot 35% from euro 3, which is farther back than the high school line.
porzingis was also playing in the best european league which blows high school out of the water in terms of competition level. they play structured basketball and they are grown men. maker is essentially playing AAU ball with kids he's older than where you can dominate if you are athletic.
i have to look more at maker still but i see more perry jones than porzingis right now. regardless, he's a massive project.

He's a Greg Monroe clone because he's not athletic, can't play Defense or score effectively enough out of the post. I can't think of a better comparison for the guy.

Everything ive seen and heard about the guy tells me hes a dumb and lazy player. Anthony Bennett 2.0, intangibles-wise. Id much rather get Rabb, or even Sabonis if they decide to go with a power forward in the draft.

I'm fine with Rabb, Davis, Sabonis, Labissiere and Chriss. All athletic 4's that can play next to Dre

What you say makes sense, but we had that in Monroe. Remember? He was Drummond's scapegoat last year. Drummond's game was being stifled because Monroe was clogging up the middle and ruining spacing, bla, bla, bla. Whatever. So now we've got Stan's 4 out, 1 in. That's what he wants, even though the 1 in has a novice, black hole post game and is a liability when he gets fouled.
