It looks like Major League Soccer could be coming to Detroit.
Quicken Loans founder Dan Gilbert and Platinum Equity founder Tom Gores are joining forces to try to bring an MLS franchise downtown.
The plan includes building a soccer stadium at a still-to-be-determined site. A source says the abandoned Wayne County jail site on Gratiot near Greektown is the No. 1 option, although the site remains under county control.

Gilbert owns the Cavs and I can't stand the Cavs, but he has done a lot for the city.

And has gained a lot of personal wealth off of the city.

gilbert is a crook but right now it looks like hes doing great stuff for the city so im cool with him.
this idea could be nice too. would be ideal to bring the pistons down to the city but with dan being in on this, i doubt it happens that way.
when does the mls season even go? does it interfere with the nba season?

Soccer has become big in Orlando since they started their team this year. Games have generated decent attendance as well.

Gilbert has done a lot of good for the city, whether that's for actual compassion for the city or not is anyone's guess. But it's good when business decisions and social well-being go hand in hand.
I know a lot of people in the lower MI to upper (Toledo) OH residents that love soccer to death. This would be a pretty lucrative market for them. Especially if soccer blows up soon.

why do you doubt it happens this way? This is a genius way to bring the Pistons downtown

because the arena would likely be co-owned and proceeds from the games would help line the pockets of a division rival. idk if the league would even allow that.

This is going to be an arena specifically for soccer (probably outside?). It won't affect the Pistons at all, other than maybe making downtown a more desirable place to be.

While i can understand the slight resentment, he is a business man and from detroit. The city needs investors and being that he has so much money in the city, its in his best interest to bring the city back . We need someone to do it as obviously our gov is sh*.

I thought the same thing. I am actually really excited about this. I hope we pick some bomb a* name and not something stupid like the Detroit Blue collar Brick Layers.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOO annnnd and new Detroit RealGM foruuuuum!!!
So they need to build a soccer stadium , hockey rink, and basketball arena. I wonder if they can do that all in one building.

I just think he is a repugnant person. His business is sketchy, he's immature (The Decision Letter is ridiculous for any grown person), he comes off as a douche, and he's a **** father (My little brother has had some bad experiences interacting with his kids). And then everyone in Detroit sucks him off because he saw an opportunity to use the city to dramatically increase his wealth.
Obviously it's mutually beneficial, but I just really don't like the guy.

This is a pretty cool idea. The more attractions downtown the better.
I wonder if they could develop a stadium at the old tiger stadium site in cork town? I have no idea who owns that space.
Is anyone on here a Detroit city fc fan?? I always wanted to check out a game but it never lined up with my trips to Detroit. They have a decent following for a semi pro team.

This is a sports town and having a major league soccer team would bode really well for this area and the team. There is a lot of soccer talent around here and they are talking about having youth academies also, which would help tremendously. If this comes to fruition that would make four relatively new arenas downtown and within close proximity. With the Pistons to downtown talk intensifying in the coming years that would be five if and when it does occur, my only concern would be congestion during overlapping parts of the season when multiple games are scheduled at home.
Additionally my preference would be for that major league team to be the recently formed Detroit City FC, our current minor league club. In recent years MLS has 'promoted' several franchises from the minor leagues and DCFC has been ran well so far, has been relatively successful for a new franchise, and has even gained a lot of popularity. Plus, that logo would represent this city great in the MLS lineup.
And yes dVs33, there are fans of the team on here, I being one even though I live here and have yet to see a game lol.

So if you could buy an NBA team, you wouldn't simply because it's not your hometown team?
