question for the board

Post#1 » by davidvolumes » Fri Jul 15, 2016 9:35 pm

If andre were in this past draft where do you think he would have been picked. I think he would have been the numbet one pick and expectations for him to grow would have been very high. Many of us seem to underestimate dre s potential to contiue developing. He has the potential to be great. Its all up to him.

With hindsight? First or second, depending on if you think Simmons is more Lamar Odom or more LeBron James.
Without hindsight? I mean, he went 9th in a draft behind Dion Waiters who isn't a starter and Thomas Robinson who has barely held on and Terrence Ross who borders on irrelevance for me. People thought he was unmotivated and lazy and had character ~concerns~.

I think any team would take a C in the top three of they were guaranteed that he would make an all-nba team on his rookie contract.

Yeah, he'd go in the 6th to 9th range without the benefit of hindsight. Team need, not just the perception of him as unmotivated, lead to his drop in our draft.

With hindsight? Depends on the needs of the top 2 teams. Could go anywhere from first to third, but given the Sixers current center-overload situation I don't think there's any way they'd even consider him. The Lakers? They were desperate enough for a center that they gave Mozgov 64 million, so yeah, I think they'd have probably taken him.

Do you mean if he was a rookie this year? If so I couldn't see him going pass the Celtics. They drafted Jaylen Brown he wasn't good in college, and was drafted because of his physical tools. Drummond has a much better physical profile and as a big man and a lower chance of busting.

Yeah, you could be right there, seeing as they reached based on positional need. In terms of value, if we're assumiong Drummond is perceived the same way he was in his actual draft year, he probably isn't considered a top 3 pick. But neither was Brown.

simmons absolutely still goes first and i think ingram would've still gone second because he's skilled, he just needs to get stronger physically (among some other things obviously).

brown and bender are both pretty raw so it may have depended on how they viewed drummond in terms of his interviews and stuff.

i think if he didn't go in the raw/upside "tier" of brown and bender (so anywhere from 3-5) then he would've gone at #8 ahead of chriss. this is not accounting for team needs at all, by the way, just slipping drummond in somewhere and sliding the rest of the guys down.

i think drummond's mobility would be valued a little more than when he came in the league but he had his fair share of concerns coming into the league. so for me he would be about the same as a prospect, maybe a little higher.

He went 9th in a fairly average draft in 2012. Wouldn't have been much different in this year's.

I would assume top 5 because it seemed like a lot of teams weren't too excited about the prospects this year, so a athletic 7 footer would be a good gamble early. It's hard to say though.

Drummond as a prospect coming out of Connecticut would have been a top three talent in this past draft. The dropoff after Simmons and Ingram was severe and I have no doubts Andre would have filled that gap, if not being an outright part of the top tier. Brown, Dunn, Murray, Bender, etc. weren't better prospects than him coming out of college. He would have fit well in Los Angeles or Boston as both BPA and need.

Exactly Drummond had a elite physical profile coming into the draft, if Jaylen Brown can go 3rd just for being a athlete than its no way Drummond goes less than 3 especially since Boston has no real big man.

I still have no clue how he dropped to us. I just remember the year we drafted him. He's the only persons highlights I watched and he is who I wanted and doing about what I thought he would maybe a little better. I did think he'd be a defensive beast tho because of the athleticism.... He still has a bunch of time tho

IMO he'd go #2 to the Lakers. Continue their big man tradition.

Dre, Randle, FA, Clarkson & Russell...

They wouldn't sign Mozgov but still sign Deng

With hindsight he'd be the top pick. He's established an excellent floor and still has big potential.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I remember wanting him in the draft and praying he'd fall but not expecting him to. I went to work that night and missed the draft. I came home and instantly searched to see who we got and literally cried when I found out. I knew he would be special, and he has been. Yes he has his flaws (ft%) but he has lived up to my expectations and looks to only get better.

Never before have I seen the word potential so readily attached to a 5th year nba starter. People keep talking about how young he is as if he was first 18 yr old to ever enter the league.

Well, Drummond is already a very good player and he still has quite a bit of potential to get even better.

But that word is being used here in reference to Drummond as a prospect coming out of Connecticut, not the player he is now. That's the framework of the question.

Not true. In every thread and every post about Drummond, it's "...Well, he has a lot of improving to do, but he's still so young! He's only 22! The ceiling is so high!" As if he just got out of his first AAU camp.

You're just seeing what you want to see. This specific thread is about where Drummond as a prospect would have went in this draft, so potential is a big thing. That's what draft prospects are all about.

But Andre is still good right now with or without potential.
