Pistons 2016/2017 Lineup Management
Based on SVG's preference to play 9 players and what he's said in interviews so far, I've put together the lineup strategy I'd use if i was coaching.
Lead under 20:
RJ/ISH
KCP/SJ
MM/SJ
TB/JL
DRE/AB
- (I'd rather play Boban, but I think SVG will use Baynes)
- I think SJ improves enough to get starters minutes playing 3 and some 2.
- Marcus Morris and KCP stagger substitutions. MM comes out first for SJ. Then KCP comes out, SJ switches to 2, MM comes back in at 3.
- This works to keep a PLUS defender on the floor at 2 AND 3 at all times.
Lead over 25:
LB
DH
RB
ELL
BOBAN
- I think Lorenzo gets the nod because of GB's injury. SVG doesn't like injuries.
Injury to a Guard or Wing:
- GB goes to the 3rd unit.
After trade deadline
- I think Baynes is out, replaced with Boban. Just based on hearsay and the fact that I think Boban is better.
Any Thoughts? Better ideas?

Re: Pistons 2016/2017 Lineup Management
My hope, Leuer played a lot of 5 in Pho, my hope is SVG plays him there, Baynes shows me nothing last year. Not a great defender, rebounder or scorer. I hope Stan picks this lineup bc our 2nd lineup will be extremely fast with all Shooters besides Smith, and everyone can make a shot for them selves besides Bullock
Reggie/Smith
KCP/Bullock
Morris/SJ
Tobias/Ellenson
Drummond/Leuer

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't he play most of the minutes at centre out of necessity rather than want?
It's a nice up-tempo lineup though!

Re: Pistons 2016/2017 Lineup Management
C. Andre Drummond (36 mins) / Aron Baynes (12 mins)
PF. Marcus Morris (24 mins) / Jon Leur (14 mins) / Tobias Harris (10 mins)
SF. Tobias Harris (24 mins) / Stanley Johnson (14 mins)/ Marcus Morris (10 mins)
SG. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (32 mins) / Stanley Johnson (16 mins)
PG. Jackson (32 mins) / Smith (16 mins)
Drummond - 36 mins

Harris - 34 mins
KCP - 32 mins
Jackson - 32 mins
Smith - 16 mins
Johnson - 30 mins
Leur - 14 mins
Baynes - 12 mins
This is assuming that SVG goes 9 deep for his rotation. I know it isn't perfect, so any thoughts on it?

I think you need to swap Tobias to PF and Morris to SF just based on how SVG used them last year. I also think 34 minutes per game is too high for Morris. I think he'll get about 30 next year. Jon Leur probably plays a few more minutes than 14...same with Baynes (more than 12).

If this is a playoff rotation I understand but if not, where's Boban and Ellenson?

Re: Pistons 2016/2017 Lineup Management
When Tobias and Mook play together, there is no PF anyway. Someone obviously checks the opposing PF, but that will depend on who it is. Mook provides better post defense, so he's more likely, but if the SF is clearly the better scorer, it may be Mook on him instead. Tobias is clearly the weaker defender of the two.
I like Tobias. He provides the team offensive versatility. If I were forced to trade one of them, though, Tobias would easily be the first to go. And that's WITHOUT looking at their contracts. Tobias has a solid contract, a bit of a value in this new market. Mook, well... you know. It's amazing.

Re: Pistons 2016/2017 Lineup Management
I just wanted to share a thought here as it's the most applicable topic, and I didn't want to start a separate thread. I think people are really under selling the upgrade of Steve Blake to Ish Smith. That upgrade alone should net us a few extra wins even if every player stayed the same. We watched as countless leads were blown when the bench would come in. Ish Smith with the way he handles and scores, and now finally given a consistent home and PT, could potentially be a 6moty candidate.

RJ
KCP
Harris
Leur
Dre
Ish
Hillard
SJ
Mook
Baynes
*At some point during the season whether through trade or injury, we'll see Bullock, Brown or RM, Boban get significant playing time.
I think we all are going to be presently surprised with Leur, who is probably the best PF on both sides of the ball. Harris is a good PF, but a nightmare matchup for a SF. While on paper this may not be our best lineups, i think production wise it would provide the best results.

I'm with you 100 on Ish... Thinking about how DJ did here, Jennings, Ish is going to have a field day. Even ray.
Pgs do pretty well with SVG so I'm looking forward to seeing the action.
I think Stanley is probably closer to 6moy though

It's nice to try and do something like this then realize how damn deep we are on the front line.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I don't see Smith getting 6th man of the year award. I don't think he's quite talented enough but even if he was he won't get the minutes. The only way he gets the minutes is if RJ plays some SG consistently and I don't see that happening at all with KCP and SJ here. With that said, I agree, he is a huge upgrade over Blake. I though Blake was actually pretty good during the last 3rd of the season or so because he was simply hitting his 3 pointers but he was absolutely crippling to us the first half of the season. He single-handedly cost us 3-5 games. Smith/McCallum >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Blake/Dinwiddie.

Re: Pistons 2016/2017 Lineup Management
Jackson (32)/Smith (16)
Caldwell-Pope (34)/Johnson (14)
Johnson (20)/Morris (28)
Harris (32)/Morris (6)/Leuer (10)
Drummond (34)/Baynes (14)
I'm hoping this is what we see for the majority of the season. The big difference from other poster's projections is SJ in the starting lineup. Even if SJ isn't quite ready to be a starter that can be a go-to option I think it's still smart to start him, partially for that reason actually. Our starting lineup is very dynamic offensively and that doesn't change much with SJ in there. He can be the 5th option at first and then we can slowly start running more plays for him as the season progresses. He will also give the starting lineup some added defense. Morris is definitely a quality defender but I think having KCP and SJ on the perimeter together will make for a deadly defensive combo. Lastly, this provides more security for our bench as Morris is a really nice go-to player for stretches AND is a better shooter than SJ. One of the biggest problems for benches is not being able to score consistently and Smith and Morris would be a great remedy for that since they both can score in bunches and carry an offense for stretches at a time. Also, Smith isn't nearly the shooter that Blake was so having Morris on the second unit instead of SJ will create better spacing to knock down shots and open up the floor for Smith, a guard that is heavily reliant on breaking down a defense with dribble penetration. Of course, SJ has to prove to be at least semi-ready for this for it to work, which I think he will be.
That is a rock solid 9 man rotation overall though. Leuer is pretty average but the other 8 are well above average players. Baynes is one of the better backup centers in the league and both Smith and Morris can be game changers off the bench. I see us being one of the most difficult teams in the league to guard since we have 4 starters who can all shoot 3's, get their own shot, AND drive all the way to the rim. It will be nearly impossible for teams to consistently close out on us, as long as we have consistent ball movement, since running RJ/KCP/SJ/Morris/Harris off the 3P line will inevitable result in some serious dribble penetration with competent finishers all over the floor. Add in Drummond's offensive rebounding, polished post game, and the defensive attention he commands on P&Rs and we will be a nightmare to defend. Really, my only concern is consistent defense. We struggled with that after the Harris trade, although Harris has significantly improved his defense over the years, and he got torched by Love in the playoffs mainly because he is a smaller PF. The biggest thing holding us back from a 50+ win season is Harris being able to defend opposing PFs a little better and Drummond taking a significant step forward as a rim protector. Other than that we are golden with offense, perimeter defense, rebounding, chemistry, coaching, overall depth, etc.
Sigh I hate getting too excited about the season this soon

Meh, I really don't see the starters averaging that few minutes, unless we have a GSW type season and are blowing every team off the floor. The only starters last season that averaged slightly more minutes than were desirable were KCP and Morris, and only by 2-3mpg, but I fully expect SJ to step up, as most posters do, and take those extra minutes from KCP and Morris. I see each starter averaging 32-34mpg (RJ might average a minute or two less like last year) which is really great for preserving the starters legs and is usually the norm. No need to cut them all down to 30mpg or less. That will cost us games if anything and would be more of a luxury than a set rotation by SVG imo.

I think that for his development, he should start next year instead of Marcus, who could be the 6th man of the year.
