He handle still looks mediocre...he needs to lock himself in the gym and work on his shooting, ball-handling, and footwork.

Kid is going to be sweet. He's going to be able to take big shots. So glad we didn't draft Winslow or even worse dekker

Dayyyyyum 40 in Drew League? The league better watch out. This guy is nearly 80% the player Austin Daye is.

My comment could very well be seen as flippant but I also have high hopes for Stanley Johnson. The guy listens and he works. Those are very favorable attributes for a positive developmental arc.

Not too confident in that. He disregarded SVG's preference that he focus on shooting and ballhandling and stay out of these types of games where he clearly went away from his weaknesses and focused on beating subpar talent.

Luckily he's so young that there's a lot of time for course correction.

Yeah, we should trade him ASAP! He's such a rebel.

In the good ole summertime.

I believe that he convinced SVG to let him play SL, which is why he played Summer League in the first place.

I believe him using SL to work on his weaknesses made SVG happy enough that he "allowed" Stanimal to play in the Drew League.

Remember, SVG said he didn't want SJ to play Summer League OR Drew...and then backed down.

Either SVG doesn't plan ahead (LMAO) or the 2 Stans had a meeting that resulted in SJ getting permission

I saw somewhere that it was Beyer who went to SVG and convinced him that SJ should go to SL. Beyer had been working with him on the areas he needed to improve. Beyer was going to coach the summer league. He was convinced that SJ had the discipline to use the SL for skill improvement, and it certainly appeared that he was working on those areas. I've said it before, but I think they are just letting the young, stud basketball player have his fun. SJ did what they wanted, and this stuff is just part of their approval. I mean, really? SJ willing to work to improve his game?

This was exciting when he was a rookie, but after doing the same last summer and then avg 8 ppg on 39% FG, these summer league performances mean nothing to me.

The way he played during the USA practices was encouraging though.

Well, yeah, it's a little silly to infer too much from the SL, and certainly not from these pickup tournaments. I was more impressed by how he finished his rookie season, and especially in the POs. A little less lippy would probably have been okay, but he did well against Cleveland. SJ's play on the Select team supports that he is progressing. He certainly gives the team a twist on "going small."

Watching him next to Draymond at the USA practices, they're identical sized and they're games are pretty much the same too, making me think his best position might actually be PF if his jumpshot never develops enough to play the 2/3.

I don't think there's any question SJ can play some small ball 4. One of the things I liked about him last year was his being a real presence down low regardless of where he was playing. Makes switching on defense a lot easier. I remain of the opinion that he's a 2/3 swing ideally, and am far from despairing of his jump shot. It would seem a little tragic to me should 4 end up being his best position. Of course, only time will tell.

At the end of day it's about putting players in their best positions to succeed, whatever that may be. If PF proved to be his best position and he became the next Draymond, that wouldn't be tragic at all. That would be amazing.

Ideally SG becomes his best spot, as we're already stacked at SF/PF with Morris/Harris/Ellenson/Leuer all on long-term deals, with only Hilliard signed long-term at SG. When you really analyze his game though, he's a lot more like Draymond than Klay or Kawhi. His jumpshot just isn't good enough to be primarily a perimeter player - not yet at least. At PF he wouldn't need as great of a jumpshot though and his playmaking, defense, rebounding, and post game would all become even bigger assets, as opposed to playing to his weakness on the perimeter at SG/SF.

One of the reasons I wanted him. To bad SVG (pretty sure) didn't use him once at PF. I belive he's going to become a very good playmaking and scoring SF tho. Would like to see him play some PF too

yeah, after hearing we had interest in Draymond but weren't likely to get him, I thought Stan drafted SJ in part because he could be that player for us instead. But then we never used him there, even with only Ersan/Tolliver at PF most of the year.

Stan talks a lot about versatility in the summer, but then rarely actually puts it to use during the season. We need to get more creative with all this versatility. Watching Draymond use his strength/physicality to stop Love in the Finals makes me think we had the answer already on the roster in Stanley, but never once tried it.

Agree with Toddo as I usually do:

Against certain teams SJ could play PF...we've got Harris & Mook to defend SFs anyway

Harris needs to improve on D almost as much as Reggie

looking at the front court SVG has put together there's really no match up that will give them trouble. Harris, mook and Stanley are so versatile and then you can just chuck in leuer or Ellenson if you need size. It's been so long since we've had this kind of versatility.
I think Stanley will take a big step forward this year. He's going to be a super sub wing that can jump in at SG, SF and PF depending on the match up.

SVG already has said he will use SJ at PG for some spot minutes and he should backup SF and SG. I don't think SVG is going to use him at PF at all this season.
