If Stanley breaks out....

And needs near 30 minutes/game....hows that gonna work?
He's not a shooting guard. Bullock will get those 12 minutes backing up KCP.
Morris could slide over to backup Tobias for 15minutes and play 18minutes at SF. So there's his 30.
That's all fine, but then Leuer or Baynes plays all their minutes at backup center

And that means one doesn't play.
Or if Stanley plays all the backup SG minutes, that still only leaves barely 14 minutes/game for our bigs.
If he doesn't break out;
AD-33 Baynes-15
Tobias-33 Leuer-15
Morris-33 SJ-15
KCP-36 Bullock-12
RJ-33 Ish-15
Apologies if this post is redundant/annoying to anyone but my brain thinks of these things after a few cups of coffee.
I guess if Stanley can show improvement this year, which I would bet on that he will, then maybe its time we deal Baynes since he'll likely leave us next summer. I guess even if it's just for a draft pick at the deadline.
If we're patient this teams potential is potentially huge lol.
We are so lucky cause we're about to go on a run like our previous championship teams did. Exciting times to be a Pistons fan!
We could take the guesswork out of it and consolidate Baynes Bullock Stanley into a starting SF that can play a little SG. (Batum, George etc) But I'm confident Stanley can be that guy

Good problems to have! Stanley will play more than 15 mpg regardless - he was at 23 last year - and did back up KCP quite a bit. I do think the answer is going to vary a little more this season depending on match ups. We also were extremely lucky regarding injuries last season, if that doesn't continue, the minutes issue will solve itself.

He will break out... He will backup KCP too
He'll get about 30 by the end of the season
RJ 32/Ish 16
KCP 34/SJ 14
MM 32/SJ 16
TH 32 / JL 16
Dre 32/AB 16
I think Reggie Bullock will get minutes too in the doldrums of the regular season, but in a 9 man rotation, SJ plays a lot of SG.

I don't think there will be real consistent roles/minutes for guys on a night-to-night basis. Johnson will play at both the two and the three regardless of how well he's playing, Harris and Morris split time at both forward spots, Leuer gets some run at the four and five, etc. Who's playing and how much just won't be set in stone given the versatility and depth of the rotation. I think the only exceptions to that are Jackson and Drummond, and possibly Caldwell-Pope to a lesser extent but I expect his minutes to come down this season.

Definitely good problems to have. Go Pistons!

Stan does not have a history of holding players back that can play. He leaned heavily on a rookie Johnson last season, despite Johnson being a nightmare by most metric analysts.
If Stanimal makes a leap this year, SVG will open up the time for him. Whom would lose the minutes, would be whomever Johnson is outplaying, effectively.

I'll play along...if Stanley break out then I think he cuts into Marcus Morris's and Bullocks minutes (if he even gets any regular minutes).
9 man rotation:
C: Dre 34/Baynes 14
PF: Tobias Harris 30/Leuer 18
SF: Marus Morris 30/Johnson 18
SG: KCP 34/Johnson 14
PG: Reggie 32/Ish 16

If Stanley breaks out you play him at SG until you can pull a trade to consolidate assets. But injuries are almost always a factor so I wouldn't stress over being too deep. Especially after the crappie we watched last season.

I want to see Stanley break out for a full season before I'd rely on it enough to make personnel moves.

WHEN SJ breaks out:
Dre 33, JL 15
Harris 30, JL 10, Mook 8
Mook 22, SJ 28
KCP 30, Hilliard 18
RJ 30, Ish 18
That's 9 guys...
Boban, King Henry & a rookie drafted in 2017 make up the 12

That equals 50 minutes. But I hear what you're saying. Stanley would get 26 at SF and take a few of Hilliards or Bullock's minutes at SG.
Which brings me back to trading Baynes before the deadline.

If stanley breaks out u make a trade. Eitherway svg likes to have options and be able to take adv of matchups.

So drop Harris to 28. Mook plays 10 at PF, 20 at SF. SJ gets 28 at SF.
Dre 33
Harris 28
Mook 28
JL 25
SJ 28
Versatile, agile, hostile! Can mix & match depending on the opposition
We need a combo 2/1 that can back up KCP & RJ/Ish more than we need Bullock or Hilliard IMO.
Dude needs to be a sniper too

Van Gundy already mentioned earlier this summer that he expects SJ to play a little PG. Thus, if he puts in 5mpg there and/or 10mpg at SG and 15-20mpg at SF, then he will get his 30mpg regardless to earn the sixth man of the year award.

I think it was more a reference to expecting to run more offense through SJ. I doubt he actually plays the PG matchup on defense. It's asking too much of Stanley, and it wastes his defensive physical presence. No defensive scheme should have SJ chasing small guards around on the perimeter by design. Even at 2, SJ is a matchup for the bigger more physical players.

i really doubt that stanley will "break out" this year, at least not to the point where we have to shuffle the lineup around in a big way.
i hope he just does well in the minutes he does get, but i think he'll play around 25 minutes this year.

A lot of personnel moves are made for potential, maybe he just needs space. Another season and the game will start to slow down which means less mistakes and that leads to more playing time. With more space, Stanley could easily become a star. There's a chance we will ride out Morris's contract until it's up and have Stanley start at SF then. There's also a chance Jackson gets traded for a more complete PG. I give Jackson this year to put it together, if he can't take us past the first round then I'd vouch for a trade. There's always new emerging players each year. One of them will be Stanley Johnson

I think Stanley will break out this year. He's a Mini Lebron, look at him, even manned him up on the court. I don't think we'll know Stanley's real potential until he starts much like Drummond. I think he'll progress like Jimmy Butler did through the years.
