Mitch McGary?

Post#1 » by theBigLip » Tue Sep 13, 2016 4:29 pm

I'm surprised that a thread hasn't started already. Anyone mentioned in wiretap MUST be discussed as a possible Piston :-)

Seems like he has a problem with the herb, and he is probably at best a rotation player 4-5. But he could certainly be had on the cheap. We could use a future second, put him in the D-league and see what happens. Seems like a low risk move to me.

Whose roster spot does he take? Players assigned directly from a team in the NBA to the NBADL need to be on the 15-man roster. Trading a second round pick, cutting McGary, and then having the Drive sign him doesn't make much sense.

Can't trust him as a player/teammate. If the league is going to take pot off the blacklist any time soon then he might have value in the league - but he has an obvious addiction issue right now given that he'll risk millions of dollars and his career to get high.

Even without the marijuana issue, not sure he really fits where given our off-season additions of Leuer, Ellenson and Boban, along with Harris/Mook signed here for a few seasons yet.

I still think Mitch can be an above-average NBA bench player, but I wouldn't touch him right now. Dude is totally smoked out.

A dude that would rather smoke pot than play in the NBA and make millions of dollars? Dude obviously doesn't care about basketball, pass.

If he didn't go to Michigan, we wouldn't even have this thread. If the Thunder cut him, I would sign him to a camp contract and then waive him to put him in Grand Rapids. Hes not worth a roster spot, and would be our FOURTH STRING Center. 3rd Pg is more important, and I'm not cutting Michael Gbinije (thank you google) to get Mitch a spot.

Wouldn't surprise me if OKC just waives him at this point, I don't even think you'd have to give up a 2nd. Though honestly I don't know if being closer to his old college would help his issues, the guy just can't stay away from pot.

The guy has probably had how many warnings by now from execs, friends, and family?

Yet he just ignores and smokes and smokes. He's basically smoking his future away. I'm not against pot or anything, but I'd choose the NBA money over pot pretty easily.

Unless he's actually managed to get addicted to pot, which is a whole different issue.

OKC pot or Michigan pot? Yeah I'm pretty sure I know what way I lean on that. I don't want him tho

There's no point at this stage. Now that we have leuer there's not many minutes left for him and he's too much of a risk.

I can't remember if this was public information or not, but didn't he declare for the draft because he got busted with drugs? I thought I remember him choosing to stay in school to recover from surgery and show that he was healed, then "changed his mind" at the last minute......

He tested positive for marijuana during the NCAA tournament, in which he wasn't healthy enough to play anyways. He was on the fence about going pro vs staying another year to improve his stock, but once he found out he would have to sit out the entire year if he stayed, he decided he may as well go pro.

I wouldn't give value, but I'd take a flier on him if he gets waived. Send him down for a year then, if he stays off the weed, give him a crack at the third center spot next season.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Absolutely, there is a good backup Center in that brain on his. He just needs to control his priorities.

What place does he even have on this team? Our needs for bigs that can't shoot is complete.
