Pistons claim Beno Udrih off waivers

Steve Blake 2.0 - SVG must have been unhappy with both Brown and McCallum. Udrih is close to being done just like Blake. Looks like McCallum gets waived after all?! I get that experience is important and all but at this point Udrih is not better than McCallum in my opinion, also they are adding a guy who has to play right now and didn't do any training camp stuff.

He was actually pretty decent a couple years ago, not sure what he's like now

Would be nice if Detroit could place a waiver on Goodwin but they can't since they're over the cap. Could do it for Udrih since he was on a minimum deal.

What the heck...Archie would've been awesome.
Sigh, like someone said, he's Steve Blake 2.0. And knowing Stan, he'll probably play him due to vet leadership or something.

Yep :/ seems like SVG really values having a guy like that on the bench even if there might be younger options with more potential but less experience

Excellent. I have always like Beno. Very steady and very experienced with a great pedigree playing for pop in San Antonio.
Best possible solution until Reggie gets back.
Couldn't be happier.

Surprised we made this move. Hopefully Ennis is claimed so he was never an option. If we're going to shuffle things up late like this, I'd rather have somebody with potential. Beno is a prototypical 3rd point guard at this stage though - makes sense when Jackson is back healthy. Just not sure I like this move until then though.

I thought we were trying to get younger, quicker at the backup point guard spot? Is this guy really Steve Blake 2.0? If so, I don't see the point. Also, does this mean Ray Mac was waived?

For what it's worth this move has zero cap implications. The cap hit for both Udrih and McCallum is/was $980,431 and the cap hold next year is still $1,014,746.

Houston ended up keeping Ennis and waiving Prigioni.

Ish Smith is the back-up point guard, so we did get younger and quicker. This move was made for when Reggie is back. Beno is a better 3rd point guard than Ray in Stan's eyes.

Just when I thought SVG and I was on the same page, this happens.... Not a fan, definitely a Steve Blake 2.0 type deal. Was really excited about Ray...but in Stan we trust.

As the third stringer when it's all said and done. Yea I'm with svg on this one neither Ray or Lorenzo looked that good in preseason.

Udrih is an upgrade over McCallum. Good move.

Beno has been a solid pg throughout his career. Smart and can definitely hold his own despite his age. Great pickup as a 3rd string pg.

SVG: "We loved Ray and think he's an NBA player and hope he is back with us at some point."
Is he talking years down the road here or what? Wants him for GR? Ray is better than the D-League though, should probably look to Europe for a stint.

Steve Blake 2.0. I hate this move.

He's better than being just Blake 2.0 at least from what I've seen from them in the past 2 years ( Sidenote: I've never been a fan of Blake ).
Beno is a good passer and makes smart passes, knows his limits and keeps his TO pretty low. His 3pt is okay, tho he doesn't take a lot of those but the mid-range game is his bread and butter, can stop on a dime for a nice little jumper around the free throw line and hits a high % of those shots.
The only valid comparison with Blake is he's a bit slow at this point of his career, that especially shows on the defensive end. He does use his smarts to compensate for the lack a speed, so he doesn't get beat constantly, but it tends to happen.
All in all I think you guys will come to like him more with time, if you give him a chance.

I like it, Beno will only be the backup until Reggie is back and the guy knows how to run an offense. I trust that SVG knows what he is doing and that this is a good move.
