Tobias Harris: Early MIP Candidate?

Yeah, the title of this thread mostly came from this:

But Harris has been great the first four games and looks much improved. Even more than was expected by just having a full offseason for him and the rest of the team to gel. There's this too:

If he keeps playing this way trading Jennings and Ilyasova for him might overtake the Jackson trade for Van Gundy's and Bower's biggest steal.

There were so many Orlando fans who were convinced that they won the trade.

He's only taking 13 shots a game right now, and making an absurd amount of them. When Reggie gets back I suspect that will go down a bit, and his numbers will fall as his shooting starts to get back down to earth.

He looks much improved for sure, but I don't think he'll get the raw numbers to really make an argument for MIP. Especially with the way Kawhi Leonard looks so far this season. But I do think he's got a good shot at being an all star if we manage to maintain ~top 4 in the East until the ASB.

This is truly one of the worst trades in NBA history. It's almost as if we outright signed him in free agency because we essentially got him for free.

He's shooting it without hesitation. He's really hot coming off of the summer. I believe he'll continue to play this way throughout the season and his numbers will get a bit lower but I also think he should become our secondary scorer. SVG would be an idiot if he takes shots away from harris, he's a whole lot better than last season

I expect him to stay at his 20ppg (or close to it) pace even when Reggie returns

He's averaged 17+ PPG previously in his career so I'm not sure 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists per game is good enough for MIP. I think he's got to average close to 25 PPG to get MIP and I don't think he gets there.

That said, if he continues to efficiently score 20+ PPG this year he could be an all-star I think. After Lebron, Love, Melo, and Paul George I think there are a few open spots for bigs in the East.

Tobias clearly looks better offensively. The defense still needs some work.

Oddly...

Drummond clearly looks better defensively. The offense still needs some work.

Naw, not gonna win it. But I think we'll be a better team with him as our leading scorer instead of Reggie. Will be interesting to see how much we change with Reggie back, but good to see Ish develop chemistry with our starters.

I think he's gonna cool off a bit as the season goes on. He's not gonna keep shooting 50% from 3, lol.

You could include Morris in this convo as well. Look at our team stats so far. They are our whole team.

If he continues to perform at a blistering performance like this, then yeah, i think it's up there easily.

Probably won't win mip but he could get some votes. Main concern is when Reggie comes back he could take shots away from Tobias or Morris both have been playing awesome.

I would say he'd have to be an "early" candidate. If he can get the same amount of touches and stays aggressive when Jackson comes back I think he'll get some votes.

Even if Harris only averages 20ppg up from 17ppg, but does it much more efficiently by increasing Shooting Percentages, Steal Percentages and +/- a good deal, then he should still get MIP.

Eh- probably not. It usually goes to guys who had a complete breakout year. eg C.J. went from 7ppg to 21ppg. Butler went 13 to 20.

Anyway, if he keeps it up, the greek freak should win it this year. He's sitting at 24/8/6 right now plus 2 blocks. If he's healthy, he'll likely be featured like that all year too.
