http://www.mlive.com/pistons/index.ssf/2017/01/pistons_reggie_bullock_cuts_hi_1.html#incart_river_indexThe article is about the success Bullock had moving without the ball and cutting to the basket for some easy scores. Van Gundy had the following to say about it:
"He adds a new dimension to us, his movement without the ball," Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy said. "I mean, it's starting to get contagious. We had a couple of other cuts and things. I said tonight after the game, he's only played seven games this year - and he probably has more cutting baskets than the rest of our team combined. But you did see some other guys start to cut. I think that he's sort of setting an example for people."I was struck by this quote.
You're not a fan, you're the head coach. If you like players cutting to the basket (which you should), then coach it. Demand it. Try drawing up
actual sets and plays that call for movement and cutting and back screens. It's like he sees Reggie cutting to the hoop and says, 'hey that's a good idea, I wish more of the guys did that. Maybe they'll follow his lead.' WTF??

I take it the other way, because I know SVG is a good coach. He wants players to cut, but they aren't doing it enough. Once they see it work for someone else that isn't lazy, they try it themselves. In other words, this is an intentional call-out of his players.
Remember, Stan is a whiner. He will grate on players, especially if they aren't winning. It's his thing, for better or for worse.

You're reading way too much into that quote. Jeez. It's a compliment to Bullock. Effort, moving without the ball, it's contagious

wth are you even talking about, our most basic set invole off the ball cuts, the only difference is most of the guards or fowards go for the hand off and make no attempt to v-cut. Bullock , who's iq or feel is obviously more mature, has been able to recognize when forwards or guards are anticipating the screen and cheating, so he goes back door.
The difference has nothign to do with SVG coaching as its been the same, its been RB recognizing and reacting. Offensive set plays are there to create opportunities for our players, its up to them to utilize them and excute correctly

This might the homerism in me, this might be the "let (some random scrub who I've seen some random game film or something more vague) play" in me. But I honestly think Bullock has a style game that this team really needs and he actually understands what its like to be almost out of the NBA, so he brings the drive that this team severely lacks.
I'm not saying hes going to be some amazing 6th man type, but I think he can very easily be a key bench player that plays at least a little bit every game.

This!
It's partly an acknowledgement of a job well done and partly a shot at others

Since we are discussing bullock, consider this. When kcp returns to the lineup bullock will be relegated to a secondary role. I think it makes more sense to have a very efficient bullock in the lineup then an inefficient Morris.

I don't believe for one minute that SVG hasn't already coached the behavior and tried to get guys to move the ball and move off the ball. He's making a point by giving credit to Bullock and calling out other guys on the team. I am OK with this.

not every movement on the basketball court is pre-determined by a play call. there are designed cuts in plays (UCLA cut is a popular one) but those aren't the cuts that SVG is referring to. he's referring to the opportunistic cuts players can make that are off-script. backdoor cuts when the defense has fallen asleep, a weakside cutter when a player is driving on the strong side, etc. are cuts that aren't designed but can make a huge difference for an offense.
here's a good example:
this isn't a designed cut - it's just lebron seeing a lane, seeing the defense collapse and the opportunity presented itself. the last part is making the effort to cut hard and he ended up getting an easy basket.
below are two cuts from the game yesterday:
these are two textbook cuts. when players are denying the pass one of the easiest counters to that is to cut to the rim since they've given up their "goal-side" position. it's lazy defense by both defenders but it's the habit of making that cut that our players don't really have.
now that i watch them, bullock's cut was a little slow but reggie made a nice fake that he was going to get the ball on a dribble hand off and then cut when sefolosha overplayed it. both were nice finds by dre. he's shown glimpses of making nice passes like these which makes me hopeful that in the future we can use him in the high post more effectively. ideally he'd be adept at scoring out of the high post
and passing out of there. right now he just gets the ball there and executes a dribble hand off.

No, its just RB is a smart cutter.
Singler used to do it a lot. Its just a bball IQ thing. Some guys have it. Some guys just like to dribble and look good.

And Drummonds always been a great passer too... even from high school. He has that potential if guys start moving.

Agree Dre has some nice passing potential. He has made some very nice wow passes, he has made some dumb passes too and turnovers. You have seen the glimpses throughout his career (some don't think he can pass), ala KCP showing glimpses of being able to be a better ball handler and passer (some didn't think he could do them things, let alone shoot a 3), seems KCP has put it together for the most part, hopefully Dre can do that.
