Stanley played for 3 minutes in this game

Stanley Johnson got yanked for no damn reason, for another game in the season. What kind of coaching is that? He made one mistake and got absolutely benched asap? Why is he always doing that Casey-Valanciunas like thing...

He got beat by Barnes like 3 times in a row.

Infuriating. He has been playing much better as of late. Best thing would be for him to find a new coach. SVG is going to drive him out of the league.

SVG is so hard on him while letting other players look like crap for 30+ mins

To be fair it isn't like any of Leuer, Morris, Harris, or Bullock were playing poorly either so I don't think this is a huge deal. Sucks, but that's what happens when there are a bunch of guys deserving minutes on the wings (and at PF where a couple of the wings could be pushed to).

I didn't see the mistakes. I thought it was Baynes and Ish getting killed in that 3 minutes SJ was out there. Like I said wasn't paying very close attention, but seemed to be Ish and Baynes

Is 3 minutes fair? Obviously not, that sucks. But he did have a mistake or two (maybe something to really piss off SVG?) in his 3 minutes (-10 +/- in 3 minutes obviously aint great, even if its not all on him).. that was the peak of the Kings bench offensive explosion. And as others mentioned, Leuer, Tobias and Morris (MM mostly in the second half) were some of the only guys playing well. Bullock shot well, KCP was rusty but had some important defensive plays, minutes weren't really there tonight.
Hopefully it's just one of those nights and this doesn't become a pattern.

No reason for him to play 3 mins. He needs to play.

SVG gotta do a better job of playing SJ for his development
He's part of the future or part of a trade package - getting bugger all minutes ain't gonna help us in either scenario

Sometimes SVG does things for weird matchup reasons. Maybe he simply thought we had a better advantage elsewhere tonight. *shrug* Don't love it, but I'm not gonna throw too big a fit until I see a trend. Right now this is just a one-of and on the whole he's been getting more minutes and playing better.

I think Stanley needs some burn at the 3 with KCP at the 2.

He benches him and we lose. **** Van Gundy. If you're going to give him this treatment, do it with everyone else too.

Reporter from mlive tweeted that, the Detroit press after the game said "boy SVG has Stanley on a tight leash"
Someone else responded "that's not a leash, that's a choke chain"
Brutal and the perfect description.

Going with a military approach. Break him down to build him up. Don't necessarily think it's a good idea, but I think Stanley can handle it

The problem isn't SVG yanking SJ when he plays like that. The problem is that he is selectively enforcing that rule. Look, SJ got lit up and missed several rotations in 3 minute span. He gave up an +1 to barnes and then an easy layup. He just wasn't ready to play. In the 3 minutes he played, he was a -10 and the entire team for the rest of the game was a +5.
So yeah, SVG rightly yanked him. I would have like to see him get another chance in the second half, but that is a different issue. He yank Dre after he gave up 2 uncontested dunks, but he put him back in a few minutes later. RJ was getting blown by time after time, but he stayed on the court. If you are going to enforce a "play defense or you sit" rule, you have to do it across the board.

He was forced to put Dre back in because Leuer was in foul trouble (believe it was right after Jon got called for that charge when he passed it off to someone for an easy dunk), playing Baynes and Dre against WCS and Cousins. Ish was getting torched by Lawson too. The guys in front of Stanley were at least holding their own on defense.

It made no sense in terms of coaching a young player who has been giving good effort. Pull him, coach him up, and give him a chance to correct. A peremptory benching seemed incredibly harsh given the general level of effort last night.

agree. with the same yardstick SVG should have benched at least 3 other players.

"He was forced to put Dre back in because Leuer was in foul trouble"
He wasn't forced to. He chose to. We've got other bigs on the bench.
Ish wasn't playing well, but we have Beno over there. Why use a roster spot on a vet like that if you won't even put him out there in spot minutes to send a message?
Ultimately, Stan is trying to "play his best guys" to have the greatest chance of winning on that particular night. The unfortunate side effect is that your most talented players get away without consequences. If you've got a really self motivated star who will hold himself accountable, that might work out OK. If you are doing that with RJ and Dre, it's not going to work. They just aren't that type of players.
At this point, it's pretty clear this team isn't a contender. We've got talent. but we don't have the culture of really competing every possession on both ends. The only way we are going to build that culture is by holding our most talented players accountable by tying playing time to defensive effort and execution.

If I was Stanley Johnson I'd have my agent request a trade at this point with last night being the straw that breaks the camel's back. The Van Gundy coached Pistons is not the right situation for Johnson, it's best for both parties if he would be traded for somebody who SVG will play to try and salvage the season and team he personally built.
You don't learn by being so damn scared of making mistakes - that only causes more mistakes. Johnson needs to be on a bad team where he can be forcefed minutes and not have to worry about getting yanked for making a mistake.
