Trade for Melo?

Post#1 » by blueadams » Mon Apr 24, 2017 4:11 am

Reggie and Leur works cap-wise. Throw in next year's 1st if we need to. Think Melo could be sold on waiving his clause. Phil might be desperate enough (and dumb enough) to get rid of him to actually do it.

Melo's not a perfect player. Very understood. We're not going to get a perfect player; we don't have the ammo to. He's a legit #1 scorer. He's actually a pretty good team player (when he has teammates). I think he's got a couple yrs of high-end ball left in him. He'd at least be a change. We get rid of two bad players/contracts.

C: Drummond (please get into shape) - - - Boban
PF: Tobias - - - Ellenson (can play)
SF: Melo - - - Marcus
SG: KCP - - - Stanley
PG: 1st - - - Ish

Hopefully we get lucky enough in the lotto/draft to get Jackson/Fultz/Ball/Fox.

Trading for Melo should be a no for us. He's evidently not concerned with winning and not bad enough to be a top 5 tank commander. That leaves us where we were this season - da empty void..... Dat soul squeezing vacuum..... That treadmill of mediocrity

Melo and Harris are similar players in what they bring and Harris is younger, still improving, and makes less money. The only way you can take on a guy like Melo would be to trade Harris for him because they wouldn't work well together defensively.

That said, I would probably have to think hard about a Jackson + Harris for Melo trade partly because I would be happy to move on from Jackson and partly just because I want change after an awful season but I doubt it would really benefit us very much in any way moving forward. He isn't the guy who is going to come in and lead and inspire his teammates to be better players.

There's no point in going for melo now. Too old and expensive. also the Knicks will ask for a pick and that should be a no from us

I'd do it. Now Melo wouldn't likely come here, but I'd gamble on hoping he could be a leadership voice for Dre and Johnson to get their heads on straight. Melo would have been one of the stars of the league when Dre and Stanley were in their early teens so they might look up to him sorta deal. Also might break the Darko Curse - and I know we won a title with Darko on the team, but how many would we have won if we drafted Melo? LB wanted Melo, Melo wanted to be drafted here.

Now Reggie would have to be going the other way. I might send Toby Harris home as part of the deal because he'd be sorta redundant here, and he's the bigger contract to move over Leuer.

Melo and Courtney Lee for Harris and Reggie Jackson.

We could then let KCP walk or S&T him. Lee is paid $10M a season the next three years.

I would actually do it. Would like to dump both their contracts and Melos is shorter and a superior player. Rather watch Melo ISO ball than Mook or Reggie that's for sure.

Definitely not giving up a 1st rounder in the deal though.

I would easily do a RJ and Leuer for Melo with no questions asked. Just depends on what the Knicks are demanding for Melo. But, if I was SVG/Bower, you throw that out there.

It all depends on the price. It's clear we aren't tanking, despite many of us believing it's the best course of action. If we can flip Mook for positive value in a separate deal and add Melo to Drummond / Boban / Tobias / Stanley / KCP / Ish, then I do it all day. He gives us a legitimate #1 option on offense and hopefully someone Dre will defer to, which would hopefully allow Dre to go back to beasting on the boards on both ends and rolling hard to the basket, instead of awful post up possessions.

Especially if the price is Reggie + filler, I think it's a no brainer. Add Melo to this team, give them a year or two, if it's still a cluster you can hire a new regime, flip Melo in his expiring deal for value and clear the deck.

I would pass, he's passed his prime and has declined quite a bit.

True but he's still a lot better then both those players who are on just as long of contracts and adds up to about the same in salary between the two of them.

We don't have a whole lot of flexibility considering our cap situation and nobody wants our stars, Drummond or Reggie. Our number 11 draft pick isn't going to magically make us better so I would totally trade for Melo. If we keep Reggie then we will keep running the same pathetic offense that worked horribly for us this year. With Melo....I'll be honest, I don't know what the offense will look like, but it will be better than what we are doing now. Actually, I don't even know if that is true either. Let's just get Melo then figure this out. Or don't. Whatever. That's the best I can muster for this team at the moment.

It's an interesting trade, but all in all, we need a future PG more than we need general scoring. I like Melo, he looks bad as of late, but he still has reputation for knocking down shots that matter. It might make us playoff hopefuls again, but I don't think much more than that. His contract and his style of play are ceilings to be true contenders.

I think we need to move Dre first IMO.

Nothing wrong with the proposal - he'd obviously become our best player.

....But it's just not a good fit for either party. Not a good culture for him to be here. He'd grow weary of Stan's act very quickly. We have no one (as of now) to compliment him in the post. We have no one he'd feel compelled to defer to.

so you would trade a first for Melo who is basically a no defense ball hog these days?

I'm not a Carmelo hater but I don't think it's a good fit. I could see him doing really well as a third option on an already good team. The only way he waives that no trade clause will be to join a championship contender.
