Read on Twitter

I was hoping he would opt in...

The good news is we can likely afford to bring him back, but if not at least it will be fun to unleash the boban!

He's a quality backup, but we already have Boban and we don't need to pay $13 mil to backup centers on this bloated payroll.

I'm really curious what his market will be, I could easily see him filling the Zaza role for the Warriors depending on how things shake out.

Imagine if Baynes goes to the Warriors for a vet min. That'd be solid.

From DBB-

Minus Baynes, Pistons have around $97m committed (including J. Smith). #12 pick is worth around $4m in first year alone.

This is ridiculous, SVG better get this team back in the playoffs to justify that

I don't think there was ever a question he would opt out. $6M would be his worst case scenario offer on the free agency market in the new cap era, and he'd get more years. The threat here is we have his Early Bird Rights, meaning we can offer IIRC 175% of his last years salary - so we can offer him up to $11M yearly to bring him back.

It's not terrible option in that it will allow us to include Boban in any deal we might make for salary purposes if necessary - but I'd rather roll with Drummond|Leuer|Marjanovic than bring back Baynes for $10M a year and three years or whatever he will cost.

He has his ring from San Antonio doesn't he? He's about getting paid, and rightly so for him and his.

That's not even counting KCP.

The good news is we only have 3 more years left of Josh Smith sitting on our salary cap. The bad news is we have 3 more years of Josh Smith sitting on our salary cap.

Oh I agree, his first priority should be getting paid. I'm just skeptical about what's out there for a guy like him. My point is, if the money isn't there, playing the Zaza role for a year could dramatically up his profile, get him another ring and lead to more money.

They're wrong.

http://www.basketballinsiders.com/nba-salaries/nba-rookie-salary-scale-by-draft-year/

The 12th pick has a cap hold/contract of $2,299,400 in the first year and 120% of that brings it up to $2,759,280. Don't trust them blindly on stuff like that, they're a little more "Tweet first, verify later" than others.

Baynes opted out and the Pistons actually have less cap space now because his cap hold as a free agent is larger. I believe that cap hold is $8,450,000 since he's an Early Bird free agent but don't quote me on that quite yet. Still not a big deal though, the Pistons aren't doing anything in unrestricted free agency so there's no rush to renounce the rights to anybody.

It will be sad to see the best defender at the rim (by far) and screener on the team go, but the Pistons have too much money invested at center already. Need to shed even more there, like $23,775,506 in salary next season specifically...

Baynes will sign elsewhere, which helps justify the Boban contract. This will provide more minutes to Boban, who can be effective in certain matchups, and allow us to play more smallball. I think Baynes is a solid backup and played well for us, but would rather go in a different direction next season. He can be a decent role player on a contending team.

Well, this is obviously why stan signed Boban last summer, but...... baynes was one of the few guys on the roster with any experience on a winning team. We REALLY need to bring in some vocal vets. It's almost impossible to field a winning team without that type of presence.

This was pretty much always the plan since we signed Boban last year.

Only thing I'm thinking though is if there's any truth to the talk of D'Angelo Russell for #12, one of Boban/Baynes could've been used to make salaries match... so it would've been nice to have that flexibility. Oh well. Best of luck to Baynes wherever he ends up.
