Free Agency

As of right now:
Drummond/Boban
Luer/Henry
Mook/Harris/SJ
Kennard/MG
Jackson/Smith
KCP, Bullock, Udrih pending Free Agents.
Team option on Hilliard.
Using the MLE ($8.4 million) & BAE ($3.3 million) fill out the roster!
Split the MLE and try to get 2 vets? Try to lock up a young player using it in full?
Who are you targeting? 4 spots open as of right now if you decline Hilliard.

Realistically, barring any trades: Re-sign KCP, sign a 3rd PG and C at the vets minimum.

I'm not expecting us to sign anyone besides kcp tbh, maybe a third center but we got Leuer and Ellenson who can give you small ball minutes there.

With the Nets having DLoading to permanently give all SG minutes and PHI likely wanting vet leadership in JJ Redick, I see us basically just signing KCP to a hopefully team friendlier contract and letting Bullock go.

Can see the following from SVG:
Retain KCP
Bring in little Ray again but with a 2-way contract for DLeague
Sign a vet F/C for the minimum
Dre - Bobo - Vet
Jon - King
Mook - Harris - SJ
KCP - Kennard - Hilliard
RJ - Ish - Ray - Benji
Full roster - borderline tax payer, borderline playoff team

My expectations are for them to match any offer for KCP, and possibly use the MLE to bring in some veteran leadership. I wouldn't rule out an Anthony Tolliver return, I think he had a really positive impact on the locker room that was sorely missed last season.
But, we just don't have the cap space to outright sign an impact player. The only way something like that happens is if a trade occurs, which I wouldn't wager is imminent.

What is Amir Johnson worth in free agency these days? He's supposed to be a great lockerroom guy and plays solid low post defence and can shoot the corner three a bit, at least IIRC when I watched raptor games when he was there. Doesn't make sense here though unless we could unload Leuer somewhere and teams won't be looking at guys like Leuer until after the free agents have all signed anyways.
I don't see Redick going to Phila. I think 76ers either trade for Danny Green or will go hard at KCP. I think we match any offer for KCP though - and the worry about the tax later on and possibly trading him if we think he's too overpaid.

Absent a trade that opens something up, I don't see us using the MLE, adding (as others have mentioned) just a cheap 3rd string PG and Center.
Welcome to NBA purgatory. We have no needs, but we need upgrades at pretty much every position.

Amir is gonna command at least Leuer's money.
We need to trade well one between Harris and Morris.

I don't think Amir is getting anywhere near that money. His legs seem shot. I think last summers spending was a 1 year blip, the majority of teams know they are nowhere close to contending for a title, the big names will get paid, but I think we'll see MUCH more conservative spending across the league. Too many big names available next summer and too many teams are set up to just pocket money.

Hilliard's contract is unguaranteed, not a team option, with a guarantee date of 7/1.
Slight differences, but they are there.
The MLE, split or otherwise, isn't be used unless trades come along. That would put the Pistons a good bit over the luxury tax threshold and they're not going that far.
I think Hilliard is brought back, if not he's replaced by a cheap player (undrafted rookie), a vet with a minimum contract is brought in, and Caldwell-Pope is re-signed. One spot is left open for the two-way contract players to rotate in from Grand Rapids throughout the year. I actually wouldn't be surprised if two spots were left open for that purpose.

Make a run at Ronald Dupree to strengthen the wing.
Sign both Horace Jenkins and Smush Parker and let them battle for the 3rd PG spot.
Then roll with Cheikh Samb for a shot blocking presence.
Also, give Tremaine Fowlkes a call.

https://2ways10days.com/nba-two-way-contracts-faq-70d1c9cbbe9Great breakdown of two-way contracts. So the 15-man roster limit doesn't really apply as much, although players on two-way contracts can only spend 45 days with their NBA teams during the season. However, the days after the G-League season ends while the NBA regular season is still going on don't count so those guys will likely be with their teams then.
With that in mind, I think the Pistons fill up the rest of their permanent roster undrafted players or minimum veterans. So two or three of them, and then the two-way contracts (up to two) on top of that.

I'd try to sign Gbinije to one of those two-way contracts. Don't pick up his 1.3M option (decision due by July 15th*) and then sign him to a two-way contract. I don't think any team in the league would give him a nba guaranteed contract, so he's likely looking at one of these two-way deals with us, or somebody else or maybe heading to Euroball.
I'd also probably keep Hillard as he''ll only cost $1.4M if we keep him.

At the same time you're not going to be saving much by cutting Gbinije either. He's only making the minimum for a 2nd year player.

I wouldn't cut anybody from our roster unless a true upgrade appears, because mbenga,Hilliard r cheap, and I haven't given up on them to a comparable talent, especially with time under there belt in the system. Just hold them until a better option arrives. I feel we can deal Hilliard he's been no less prdctive then dimmwiddie and we found a way to move him, if I was Brooklyn or another team swinging for a unfound talent I would be interested in giving him solid big minutes for a minute to see what he does, I think he better than we think he's just buried behind a bunch of players who similar here, and like bollock, and Johnson deserves consistency minutes for a extended period of time with a long leash to break through.

Yeah I always just wanted to decline Hilliard but he's cheap and doesn't expect to play lol.
Just such a bad year for veterans that are available for the MLE.
Tolliver is our best bet lololol

Unfortunately this is the reality. Id obv like to see Drummond and Jackson get moved, but I have a feeling that the front office will be keeping the band together and we are looking at another 7th-12th seed season.
