When the Detroit Pistons drafted Luke Kennard, it likely sealed Darrun Hilliard’s fate with the franchise.

Hilliard, 24, has been traded to the Houston Rockets in exchange for cash considerations, the Pistons said in a news release Wednesday.

With Hilliard gone and KCP/Bullock suspended to start the season it should be fun seeing how Kennard does with all those minutes in the first few games.

Seeing as how this will probably be the only move SVG makes the offseason, allow me to say...
The summer of disappointment continues.

I could see SVG playing Morris/Harris/Leuer instead, just to drive me insane.

Best of luck to Hilliard though. Seemed like a hard worker, and he showed flashes of being a composed player in the limited amount of time he was able to play.

Feel a little bad for Darrun, as he'll likely get immediately cut by the Clips and it might be the end of his NBA run. No real loss, though. We need to start swinging for the fences with #2 picks and stop drafting college seniors with no real upside.

The amount of money exchanged probably amounts to Morey picking up the tab for a Piston Brass dinner at a swank restaurant next time they're in Houston.

Does Hillard catch on with any NBA team or is he D-League bound? Garner one of those swing contracts? Head to Euroball?

He seemed like a good dude. But kid won the lottery with Detroit drafting him in the first place. IIRC he was a stretch where we drafted him, and could have even been a UDFA if we didn't take him. So he got to be in the NBA for two years and made over two million dollars doing it. If this is the end of the road for him, if he was smart with his money he's got at worst a great heard start to the rest of his life. He's probably worth one of those new two way G-League deals somewhere, if not he can make six-figures a year playing in Europe.

If Hilliard's roster spot is replaced by an undrafted rookie on a minimum deal, the Pistons will have opened up $655,767 in cap space and room under the luxury tax. Less if it's a veteran, and the amount varies depending on how long that player has been in the league.

Works for me. Nothing about Darrun's play on the court has suggested he's an NBA player. Gbinije gets his shot as the third shooting guard and now there's a legitimate roster spot open for a cheap wing that can shoot as emergency depth. Hollis Thompson makes sense since he's on the summer league roster.

^Yes and no. I mean does it just go into Gores pocket or will it be used to buy a second rounder or something. I mean I guess it's a nice haul if the plan was to cut him anyways. But for that price I wonder if they were maybe leaning towards keeping him. I believe we're blocked from re-acquiring him for a year now.

There are a 100 Hilliards out there. Fringe players that are not likely to move the needle at all. Players like that need to get onto a **** team so they can get some minutes and improve. That is a problem with the Pistons - they are "good" players with some experience at each position, just good enough to block rookies playing time. I wish we could do a few trades and open up some PT for SJ and Ellenson, and now Kennard.

This...and it ties into the Western dominance IMO too.

Players need to play against the best consistently in order to improve.

Playing against someone more experienced than you doesn't mean much if you're on their "level" - witness our collection of 2nd tier or below players across the roster.

Going up against the best of the best every night will make you improve - and rookies that get drafted to a Western Conference team experience that with or without playing time...

Next thing you know and its 20+ years of Western Conference dominance

Man between Dinwiddie, Hilliard and Gbinji SVG is crushing it with his "draft 34 year olds in the second round plan".

Never drafting in the second round for upside, always drafting a relatively finished product who will be in Europe in a few years.

I lose more confidence in SVG every day.

Call me crazy but I think Hilliard could be a good role player in the nba. If he gets lucky and gets a legit chance somewhere I could see him doing well. Watch him go to the Spurs and he is the next Danny Green lol.

Lol. Well played. Maybe a jersey back with the name "considerations". If only there was more time to make such things.

We just traded Darrun Hilliard for stadium funding. I hope they at least name a row in the upper deck after him.

Meh - It's been 2 years. He wasn't able to get past Bullock in the pecking order, let alone KCP and SJ. With Kennard on board, he wasn't going to sniff the rotation now or in the near future. He seemed like a nice enough young guy, but he hasn't done anything to separate himself from all the guys spending time in the D league.

we got paid $1 mil to have some other team cut Hilliard on Saturday. Onto to the Gatorade league.
