Recent Pistons 2nd Round Picks

Post#1 » by tmorgan » Wed Jun 28, 2017 9:12 pm

I'm fully aware that most 2nd rounders turn into nothing, but we've been particularly bad in this area for a while. Take a look at our recent 2nd rounders... the only real contributions the Pistons have gotten from 2nds in the last 10 years are from Jerebko and Singler:

2007: Sammy Mejia (never played)
2008: Deron Washington (never played)
2009: Dajaun Summers (never played meaningful minutes)
Jonas Jerebko (second best player on this list)
Chase Budinger (traded on draft night)
2010: Terrico White (never played)
2011: Kyle Singler (got the most minutes for Detroit on this list)
Vernon Macklin (basically never played)
2012: Khris Middleton (best player on this list... oops)
Kim English (basically never played)
2013: Tony Mitchell (basically never played)
Peyton Siva (basically never played)
2014: Spencer Dinwiddie (played a little but sucked)
2015: Darrun Hilliard (played a little but sucked)
2016: Michael Gbinjie (basically hasn't played)

Ugh. One great pick that became great elsewhere, one guy that got some run as a starter but pretty obviously shouldn't have, and a solid bench guy we had for a few years. That's it.

That list is depressing, but I was curious how this compares to other teams. I just did a quick google search and found these results. Interesting to look at, I haven't spent a whole lot of time digging into it though.

First I found this chart here: https://the-cauldron.com/the-2nd-round-and-misuse-of-probability-402639df1038

Looking at these figures at even the most basic levels reveals the assured truth of the “crapshoot” tag attached to the draft’s second round. The odds of finding a decent player — not even an All-Star — was just around seven percent over an 11-year period.

This article, http://www.82games.com/nbadraftpicks.htm has a nice break down of all draft picks from 1989-2008, showing their avg career stats by draft pick number.

They are 2nd round picks for a reason, most will never make it in the nba.

I think that list proves the opposite. JJ and Singler have been rotation players. Middleton is a borderline all-star. So 3 decent guys out of the last 10 years. These are second rounders were are talking about. For comparison, the Spurs are known for drafting solid guys late. Below are their second rounders from the same period. They traded the rights to dragic to phx for a guy who never played.

Year Rd Pk Player
2017 2 59 Jaron Blossomgame
2015 2 55 Cady Lalanne
2014 2 58 Jordan McRae
2014 2 60 Cory Jefferson
2013 2 58 Deshaun Thomas
2012 2 59 Marcus Denmon
2011 2 59 Adam Hanga
2010 2 49 Ryan Richards
2009 2 37 DeJuan Blair
2009 2 51 Jack McClinton
2009 2 53 Nando De Colo
2008 2 45 Goran Dragic
2008 2 57 James Gist
2007 2 33 Marcus Williams
2007 2 58 Giorgos Printezis
2006 2 59 Damir Markota

I'm not sure that's a valid comparison. The majority of those 2nd rounders are late, picks 57-60. We've picked a lot in the 30's and turned it into one good player that we dumped before he took off, Jonas Jerebko, and Kyle Singler.

Remember when Dejuan Blair dropping out of the lottery was a big deal?

Yes, sad isn't it.

For me though it was the big deal made about 2003 2nd round picks Sofoklis Schortsanitis (greek Shaq, honestly) and Maciej Lampe. You also had Jason Kaponos comment that if his last name was "Kaponovic" he would've gone earlier in the draft.

2nd round is a guessing game, no strategy has really been proven best..in my opinion. I still think you take chances, especially as you move later on in the 2nd.

Nothing will ever piss me off more than selecting Walter Sharpe when DeAndre Jordan, Mario Chalmers, Omer Asik, and Luc Richard Mbah A Moute were available right after.
We really fell asleep at the wheel on that one.

2008 was definitely one of our worst drafts ever, trading away pick 29 when DeAndre Jordan was on the board for 2 second rounders and then passing on him again at pick 32 for Walter Sharpe was just brutal. We whiffed badly on all 3 of the 2nd rounders we had with talented role players being drafted that year.

Other than that Joe did alright for the most part with his 2nd rounders. We're still waiting on any of SVG's picks 1st round or otherwise to be a hit.
