If pistons miss playoffs. Stan out Billups in.
Just talked about it on sirius nba radio. Billups may have even talked to our owner about his offer from the Cavs before making a decision.

For sure its speculation. But would make sense for svg to get canned after year 4 of 5 if he is still in the lottery.

Meh want someone more qualified, besides being a Piston why would we want him as a GM?

That really doesn't make sense. SVG as a front office guy has done well, it's the coaching that's been suspect.
Billups is a charismatic dude, for sure, and smart, but no experience in a front office role should be a deal-breaker.

Joe D got us 6 consecutive ECF, back to back finals and a championship. Maybe Gores wants to recreate the "Detroit way".
I am neither for nor opposed to this.

I would probably give him a shot as he has a good basketball mind and these former players like him are where a lot of GMs our FOs come from. Kinda cool when you have one of your own come in and succeed like we had with Dumars before he went crazy.

In retrospect, I wonder how much John Hammond had to do with Joe's early success. The second half of his tenure here after Hammond left was certainly not good. Meanwhile, Milwaukee has a pretty decent core now that is largely Hammond's doing.

What has Milwaukee won since Hammond has been there?

Depends on whether it's because of something like last year or obvious bad coaching, something I'm not convinced I've witnessed yet. Billups should get an interview if he's interested.

And despite these accomplishments, there's still a bit of a stain on his legacy. To the point where now he's the one guy that doesn't show up to big Pistons events like the last game at the Palace or jersey retirements.
That's why I'd rather stay clear of former players. Fact is, it rarely ends well for coaches and GM's.

What has Milwaukee won since Hammond has been there?I liked the pairing of Hammond/Dumars, but I think we have given each too much individual credit for their collective success.
I don't disagree; just think I'd feel better about having Milwaukee's core right now opposed to ours as they have a player actually worth building around. We'll see how Hammond does in Orlando.

Sure but if we don't make the playoffs that probably means full rebuild which is a large responsibility for a guy new to the job. Its not just maintaining an already successful team, after all the hard ship this teams been through don't want to risk any more years on being crappy to give someone a chance. Give me someone with legit front office experience.

Billups isn't really particularly qualified, which is why he was offered below market salary from the Cavs, and why they planned on pairing him with someone who has more experience.
I don't really think he's the answer.

I'd rather keep SVG as GM and hire a coach.

People really need to get over the whole ex piston + piston way = winning narrative.

Love what Billups did for the franchise as a player. But, in no way at all would I be interested in him as a GM/team president role. He has zero experience with it. Look how badly Stan has overpaid mediocre players, Billups would probably continue that trend.
I'll take a shrewd long term planner that has a heavy emphasis on cap management and building a long term sustainable winning environment.
I do think this is Stan's make or break year. No point in having a lame duck head coach and team president for a year. Lucky for Stan, the 1/3 of the east completely threw in the towel already, and they basically have to beat a team or two out just to make the playoffs this year, as there are only ten teams legitimately chasing a playoff seed.
Getting Avery was a great get for the Pistons, he improves our chances. If we can pull another deal this summer and bring in a PF that doesn't make you cringe, they will look pretty competent on paper.

Re: If pistons miss playoffs. Stan out Billups in.
when he was playing many openly said he was GM material and or he was going into politics. He was and still is called "The Mayor" for a reason. He knows everyone and everyone knows and likes him. He is a leader and someone that many look up to. Billups will be successful in what ever he does because people gravitate to him and after all the NBA is nothing more than a big country club.
