Embiid outs Drummond: 'He doesn't play any defense'

In case there was any lingering misconception/denial out there that Dre's a good defender, Embiid sought to correct it after the game.

I guess everyone that has seen a few minutes of the pistons new that. Yesterday he was particularly bad I thought. He lacks basic defensive skills that are taught at highshool lever, e.g. his posture is awful which puts him constantly in situations where he is off balance. He doesn't raise his arms to contest passes and despite being a fast center he doesn't move his feet and gambles constantly on trying to get steals. And I can't for my life understand how a guy with such impeccable rebounding instincts has such a poor timing on trying to block shots. It's really amazing

Dre thinks rebounding means defense.

Dre defended Embiid pretty well, but he's unstoppable when he's not broke. Wait 40 games and he's out for the season.

Pretty well? No. It was a joke.

Same guys always bringing s**t. That's why I'm almost done with this forum. A lot of Pistons fans got diva's complex.

I didn’t watch was working. I heard dre was engaged on that end the start of the game. A whole lot of players aren’t going to be able to d up embiid. I know dre isn’t engaged all the time. Seems so far this year he’s been trying to be tho, from what I’ve read only have been able to watch one game

yeah drummond's man defense when he has to defend a big with actual skill is embarrassing. his technique is awful, he'd much rather reach than move his feet and he plays so passively, instead of using his body to hold his ground he seems content to give the opponents space which lets them maneuver their way closer to the basket.

The video doesn't lie, that highlights is 4 minutes of Embiid blowing past Drummond like no tomorrow, most of the time Drummond doesn't even raise his arms or is very late, if that's "pretty well", it's scary to think what would "bad" look like?

Dre had a few good steals and deflections on entries into the post but overall his defense was pretty sub par on the night.

Dre responded on twitter with "We'll see you Dec 2nd" but he should have responded with "We'll see you Dec 2nd... IF you're not injured."

Embiid usually doesn’t play.

I thought Dre played well and was engaged. He’s much better this year than last.

I was definitely one of the guys bagging on Drummond in the last game thread.
The opponent's PG would bring the ball up and inevitably Drummond would leave his man for a quick double team / weak attempt at swiping the ball away. The PG would inevitably find Drummond's man near the basket for an easy 2. It happened repeatedly.
During this time it was about 50/50 whether Drummond would even attempt to sink back to find his man. When he did, he was too late. When he didn't he would just be standing near the 3 point line guarding space. Watch the tape.
The interesting thing is that I would see Leuer do the exact same thing with the same results. So I have to wonder if this is some kind of scheme thing thought up by SVG? If so, why do they keep doing it?
If not, why hasn't someone just decided to tell these two to stay low and protect the paint? It seems like it would be an easy thing to teach...
Any guys well-versed in the X's and O's have thoughts?

It's definitely true. Dre is an offensive minded player.
He doesn't get low, He doesn't stay wide. He doesn't put his hands up. He doesn't stay between his mans hips and the rim. And this is all when he's playing people bigger and slower than him. He has no mind or habits for stopping his man, only for getting rebounds if the shot misses.

I'm glad he got called out. Even if he had a few steals, he also looked bad on several plays. I would hope this will motivate him.

Having not paid much attention to this:
What you're describing is the usual SVG hedging that I hate.
In this situation the theory goes that you force the PG to give up the ball and then work to deny the PG receiving it back.
It delays them starting their set a little longer and I imagine the theory goes that every second counts in the big leagues.
IMO it's hardly a good idea against a team like Philly where they've got multiple playmakers alongside dudes with high BBIQ
It's a strategy that can work against teams with few creators and/or dumb ass big men but that combo is rare in the NBA
SVG, for whatever reason, loves this no man's land bull. I stated last season that the way we defend the PnR is hazardous because we force Drummond to make quick decisions...and that's not his forte.
Now we're doing it outside of PnRs as well?
Yes Dre is athletic and could recover...but you're once again putting him in a position where he needs to read and react to their play as it unfolds. He's shown he struggles with that big time
Just another case where SVG as Coach doesn't put his players in a situation that hides their weaknesses

drummond always looks bad when playing against offensive centers (marc gasol, vucevic, brook lopez, kat etc.)
