Hypothetical Trade Deadline Question

Okay so I’m definitely all in on this team right now. I don’t find our hot start to be a fluke at all, we are a told team. However I am realistic enough to know this team doesn’t have a shot winning a Finals, let alone making it there.

So my question would be: if the Pistons are floating around 2-4 seed around the trade deadline, do you make a trade that could bring in a “star” talent in an attempt to try to push us over the top, while potentially disturbing the chemistry? - - Or do you roll the dice with what we have keeping the core intact, but doing so with knowledge you might not make much noise in the playoffs in what seems to be a WIDE open east that is for the taking?

I know the trade aspect is hard to gauge because you don’t really know what kind of deal they would make, but let’s assume it’s at least a starting 5 member (minus Stanley) and a young asset/picks for a all-star level talent.

That's like getting Iverson in 2008. Don't shake up the chemistry in the hopes that a star gets you over the top. Unless that star is someone like Anthony Davis, you don't do that trade. Iverson was that good too so that's why I didn't have a problem with the trade. He was just selfish.

Something tells me all this winning is gonna cause another Augustine for Jackson trade coming soon. I wish it was Jon who was playing well but that's unfortunate.

Yeah I definitely think if we keep winning Stan will make some sort of deal to give us a little extra push, like you said, similar to the Reggie/Tobias deals.

Yeah Iverson was literally the worst superstar they could’ve brought in for that team lol.
Although tail end of his career, wouldn’t quite say he was Anthony Davis good

Why make a win now move?

Our key contributors are all young-ish and all under contract for next season except AB & Tolliver.

The ONLY trades that need to be looked at seriously are ones that alleviate our tax issue over the next 3 seasons.

We've all put up with years of epic sucktitude but that doesn't mean that at the first sign of success you make a foolish move.

Seems some people are afraid of seeing the team be (reasonably) successful

Like I said, I love the team and think we are a good squad. But as currently constructed, I have a hard time wrapping my head around us being legitimate contenders. And unless we think Dre becomes best center in the game or Tobias/Stanle blossoms into a top ten talent (which I don’t in either scenario), I don’t know if that’ll change.

And for the record I don’t really have an opinion either way, just playing devils advocate.

Are we actually trying to be legit contenders right now though?

As much as some think "championship or bust" it's not that simple

I suppose your question would completely dictate how you answer the topic question. I understand your reasoning though

With the Warriors being where they're at, I don't think it's possible to contend until they start losing some players. They're about as close to perfect as a roster as you would want with defense and shooting at nearly all positions and bench pieces.

So really, I think the main goal is to at least break into the 2nd round of the playoffs. I don't think we do that by trading when the players are clicking right now. Even if we did get a "star" it still won't be enough to contend against the Warriors and playoff Lebron.

If the right trade presented itself I'd jump at it, but a year from now we could have Boban and Ish expiring, Leuer with only one year remaining. All become tradeable assets without having to attack picks or young players to them.

If Serge Ibaka for whatever reason came available I'd jump at that. Ideally if we could add a PF/Ce who would play ten nimutes with Dre and then back up Ce spot for 15mpg and look good alongside Harris at the PF that is the ideal target for us. Right now if Dre goes down we lose every game he is out if we're playing Boban, Moreland and Leuer at center.

Boban, Leuer, Ellenson, 2018 first rounder for Ibaka, or any PF/Ce profile like that.

Jackson|Smith
Bradley|Galloway|Kennard
Johnson|Bullock
Harris|Ibaka|Tolliver
Drummond|(Ibaka)|Moreland

We could roll a tight eight man rotation of Jackson, Bradley, Johnson, Harris, Drummond, Ibaka, Smith and Galloway with Tolly and Kennard 9-10.

Well, I could see them being legit contenders. I've seen a Pistons team without the best center in the league or a top ten talent in the league not only beat the star studded favorites for the NBA championship, but go to 6 straight Eastern Conference finals and back to back NBA finals. I watched the Bad Boys go through Magic's Lakers and Bird's Celtics and hold of Jordan's Bulls to win back to back championships on the strength of the team they mostly drafted and formed with few moves.

Look at all these teams trying to trade away everything and everyone for a "star". How many of them are "legit contenders"? Golden State built their team and didn't add KD until AFTER they won a championship. Cleveland is not a model for anyone. They lucked into Lebron being the hometown kid and then lost him, only to get multiple 1st overall picks, just to trade them away and bring back Bron.

What has OKC done in this league in the postseason? How about Houston? Remember Dwight Howard and Steve Nash to the Lakers? What did Melo do in NY after being traded there? Chris Paul has moved around, what has he accomplished in the postseason with any of his teams?

Most people believe you need a top ten player, a superstar, in order to win. In reality, very few of those actually do win in the postseason. The best teams do. The teams with talent across the floor and sound defense win championships. I like what SVG is building here and I would hate to ruin that to trade for a "star" when we've seen first hand how that can cripple a franchise.
Currently, only Golden State and Detroit are top ten in the league in both offensive rating and defensive rating. So yes, I think they can compete and be a contender.

This guy gets it.

Also I take exception to Andre "could become" reasoning.

HE IS and its happening right before our eyes. He was all-NBA 2 years ago and is playing better now then he was then.

He keeps this level of play up and guess what? He is the best center in the league.

Andre is the best player on this team. They go as he goes.

I’d do what i can to get Dudley and Chandler here since the only main roster pieces that are in question are the backup center and small forward.

Other than that, I’m all in on riding this wave

This is actually an intelligent thread because it examines the concept of whether or not a trade/trades is/are necessary. That's a different discussion than the incessant "Should we trade for [fill in name of any player in the NBA that someone would like to have on the Pistons]?" threads.

Start a trade thread and put all the trade ideas/questions in there. That's how it's done on the General Board so there's no reason we should do it differently here.

We got where we are adding talent whenever we could, I don't think we should change that direction now. If we have the opportunity to add more talent to this roster, yes we should. If another “Morris” trade opportunity appear we should take it, if “Orlando” get buyers remorse on “Tobias” contract we should grab him, if the next “Rasheed Wallace” is available, we gotta jump all over that opportunity again.

And we should activelly pursue a better option at backup SF. Ellenson for Dekker could do wonders for us for example.

FYI. It takes years to build a finals contender. Not gonna happen this season no matter how many trade ideas people come up with. Just enjoy the developing process and improvement we get to witness this year.

Sign me up for that one. Dekker is a great fit here.
