Andre Drummond- Most Improved Player

Most people have focused on Andre's improved free throw shooting, but he has improved drastically in so many areas that I believe are going unnoticed to the majority of NBA fans. Literally the only bsic category that he's down from his career average is 3pt shooting %. Bolded are career bests for him.
Andre Career- 13.3 pts 12.8 rebs 0.7 asts 1.5 blk 1.2 stls .548 fg .381 ft
Andre '16-'17- 13.6 pts 13.8 rebs 1.1 asts 1.1 blk 1.5 stls .530 fg .386 ft
Andre '17-'18- 15.0 pts 15.4 rebs 3.8 asts 1.5 blk 1.6 stls .552 fg .613 ft
Has any other player in the NBA going up in every single statistical category this season without a large jump in playing time?

From a pure presence stand point, Dre has been the mip no doubt. It’s been night and day. Other candidates are Dinwiddie and Oladipo.

I think Oladipo is going to win it as he has been great but Dre certainly has improved his overall game this season after being a negative out there much of last season he's doing everything to help his team win now.

Has a former all star ever been MIP?

Dipo ain't getting beat. Dre has seen solid in the past, an all-star even.
Dinwiddie has come out of nowhere, so he'll get some love as well.

Isn't Dinwiddie's situation more a product of a huge spike in minutes and usage?

He's career average mpg before this season was 18.6 mpg. This season he's playing 28.4 mpg.

Nope. A number of MIPs made the all-star that same season they won, though.

Yeah, and it doesn't change that Andre absolutely deserves it, and likely won't get it. The FT progress this year is nothing less than astounding, but his whole game has advanced. What a shame we didn't trade him over the summer, eh? The only way I see him having a chance would be if the Pistons make a serious run in the playoffs, and his play has a big role.

What does the playoffs have anything to do with it?

His PPG hasn't had a big jump so therefore he won't be considered even though he should

Nothing, on further examination. It is a regular season award, and so I was careless. However, in that light barring a scenario where Andre stars in some miraculous run to the playoffs, the point I'm making still applies. Drummond has made remarkable strides this season, but already being the league's best rebounder and a former allstar works against him.

I think Oladipo will and should get it. He practically looks like an entirely different player.
But aside from him, I don't think anyone is more deserving than Dre.

not sure where to post this but i did some digging into andre's rebounding. wilt chamberlain is known for rebounding prowess and holds many different rebounding records. here is some proof that andre could be a superior rebounder by a decent margin:
whitehops wrote:lobosloboslobos wrote:wow i didn't realize he is as close to the peak as he is as a rebounder. is wilt not way ahead though in rebounding % ? just guessing...
they didn't track average opponent stats for teams until 1971, so we don't have any TRB% numbers for him except for the last three years of his career. he averaged 18.7 rebounds a game which was good for 19.4%.
in wilt's prime in terms of rebounds/game he was getting 25-27 boards a game. the difference is that there were a TON more rebounds available back then so his TRB% probably would be similar to ~20%. i'll put out some stats:
league-wide team rebounds per game (wilt's MPG/RPG):
1960 - 73.5 (46.4/27.0)
1967 - 67.3 (45.5/24.2)
1973 - 50.6 (43.2/18.6)
as you can see, his rebound numbers went down as his minutes and rebounds overall went down. this season teams are averaging 43.2 rebounds a game. drummond is also playing 33.2 minutes a game which means there are less rebounds available when he's on the floor.
to get a crude idea of wilt's TRB% in his best RPG season, let's take both teams RPG which is 146.6 combined in 1961. wilt averaged 47.8 MPG so let's divide that by 50 (adding some time for overtime) so he was on the floor for roughly 95.6% which means he had an opportunity to gt 95.6% of the total 146.6 rebounds: 140. he averaged 27.2 rebounds so he got roughly 19.4% of total rebounds he was on the floor.
drummond this season: teams combined are averaging 86.4 boards and he's averaging 33.2 of detroit's 48.1 MPG which is 69%. 69% of 86.4 boards is 59.6 boards available when drummond is on the floor. drummond's 15.6 RPG divided by 59.6 is 26% and change.
so despite wilt's gaudy rebounding numbers i think it is very easy to argue that drummond and rodman were superior rebounders.

The MIP push took a bit of a hit tonight.

His volume stats have only moderately changed from last season and they're basically the same as two years ago. Sure, those of us watching the games know it's been a big difference.
That alone excludes him from an award that is determined by a panel of journalists, most of whom probably don't watch that many Piston games.
As someone else said Oladipo will most likely get it. And he's not a bad choice at all. If I'm being totally honest, as good as Drummond has been throughout much of this year, he still has too many games where he just looks done with life out there. Tonight was a prime example.

Oladipo went to a pacers team that lost Paul George and has turned them into a playoff team. His numbers are much better this season. No way he doesnt get it.

Side note: this award has for the most part been decent at picking guys who genuinely improved rather than fluke seasons, but man have there been a handful of duds chosen.
Bobby Simmons? Alan Henderson? Ike Austin? Aaron Brooks? Ryan Anderson? Don MacLean? George FREAKING Muresan? Who remembers that dude winning this award? These commercials are the only thing I really remember him for:

one game where his shot wasn't falling doesn't really move the needle unless he doesn't bounce back. He still rebounded, played some good defense and looked for his teammates. He also only missed 1 ft iirc.
