Yeah there's always a excuse for them. We whooped them with lockdown defense.

Yeah, I saw that while watching some of that yesterday. Shaq never lacked for confidence and always believed he was unguardable, not going to get mad about it. That doesn't take away that 04 title at all.

I don't really think they're lying or throwing shade. He's basically saying the Lakers were better on paper (they were), but the Pistons figured out how to take them out of their game. Praising the defense and LB's strategy.

Seems pretty accurate. No different than guys like Chauncey saying they should have won in 2005. Now, if they had said they just weren't trying hard because of the bad chemistry, or blamed injuries or something, that'd be salty and delusional.

Pretty big difference from Chauncey saying it in 2005. Pistons were 10 minutes away from a second championship. The Lakers were blown out and should have been swept. To me, it just shows how delusional Shaq and Kobe are when talking about 2004 championship.

Also, it definitely shows Shaq’s ego. The way he said it was Ben Wallace defending me. Ugh, the 4-time defensive player of the year?

Right, I've actually went back not too long ago and rewatched that series. They were just flat out beatdown by the heavily rated underdog with no chance.

One of my favorite Pistons ever. Two way big inside out, big mouth and entertaining that most people hate unless he plays for your team. He was just that guy that pushed us into contenders.

Kobe and Shaq ARE delusional and salty. They swear they lost on a miracle game winner in game 7 or something. We absolutely crushed them.

Kobe talking about he should have gotten everyone "prepared". No Kobe, you shouldn't have done the Pistons a solid by playing heroball forcing bad fadeaways over Tayshaun all series. It made you very easy to defend and allowed us to single cover you bro.

Hearing Shaq say they should have won easily and sarcastically say "With Ben Wallace guarding me..." had me like bruh, don't you have a 1-3 record (or something like that) against Ben all time in the playoffs? One of those loses came in a humiliating sweep when Ben left us for the "Baby Bulls".

That was annoying to listen to... I knew I shouldn't have watched that.

Tayshaun was underestimated more than Big Ben was.

Did they forget they needed a Derek Fisher miracle to beat the Spurs?

Miss the 04 pistons. It’s too bad they couldn’t repeat in 05. It seems like everyone outside of Detroit forgets how dominant that squad was.

This is a masterpiece. Makes me not want to watch the nba ever again since the game has changed so much. It will never be like this again. It’s all about flash now and pistons have none of it.

yeah it sucks the NBA has changed so much. It's basically a 3 point chucking shootout at this point.

you honestly think shaq and kobe realize there were other people on the lakers?

Karl Malone scored 20 points...total...over 4 games. Gary Payton 21, over 5.

The Pistons more or less let Shaq and Kobe do their thing, and dared any of the lakers background players to do anything.

In all fairness, it has been a while and Shaq and Kobe have probably suffered mild concussions playing in the era they did.

The lakers needed overtime to pull off their ONE win, and then looked like garbage the next game.

Well they are two of the greatest and most confident players to ever play the game, so I'd expect them to think they were the better team.

But there's nothing Kobe could've done to change the series, the Lakers were getting crapped on regardless. And Big Ben is one of the greatest defensive players ever, Shaq talked about him like he was a back up.

Really, this threads always remember me how a hell of player would be Sheed in today's NBA. Even better (so much) than he was, he would be a nightmare as C.

No doubt about that.

Post up well? Yep.
Mid range? Yep.
3 pointer? Yep.
Passer? Yep.
Rebounder? Yep.
Run the floor? Yep.
High flying athleticism at nearly 7 feet? Yep.

Sheed would absolutely kill it in today's NBA.

Imagine if they had signed a "stretch 4" instead of Nazr Mohammed when Ben walked and slid Sheed to the 5. Tim Thomas (I know, I know) was 28 that summer, signed for the same money as Nazr and is a 6'10" guy who shot 38% from 3 that year (he had been over 40% for several years before that).

On a related note, FA was absolutely terrible that summer.

Couple of things:

1) What's new? They've been saying they beat themselves for 14 years. Their fans repeat the chorus too. Even relatively well educated ones are convinced they were "supposed" to win that series. They've always had that attitude, and I'm not sure it's any different than Billups swearing up and down that the Pistons had the best team 3 years running and should have taken the championship.

2) I don't really think they said anything derogatory there. They acknowledged that LB had a defensive strategy against them that worked, and that they could have done a better job countering it than they did. Those things are true.
