For the record I want Stackhouse. But he's probably getting the Toronto job after Casey gets fired.

I'm really, really leery of retread coaches. In most cases there's a good reason why they're retread coaches. Most guys in that mold/situation don't bring a whole lot to the table in terms of scheme, player development, etc. Leadership, sure, but to be honest I don't think that should be Detroit's top priority at the moment. And it's not like first-time coaches can't bring leadership to the table anyways.

Budenholzer would be nice. He's not your typical retread. The situation with Atlanta got weird after he was stripped of his non-coaching duties (that he failed at like Van Gundy). But he's another guy that you worry about wearing on players, although the things he does as a coach are good on the whole. Unlike Stan these days.

If not either of these two guys... I don't know. As long as it's somebody who can implement a clear, useful system in today's NBA then I'm fine. Would much, much rather they focus on the offensive side of the ball but if it's suffocating defense then that's okay too. Then having a GM who can find guys to fit that system would be nice.

Makes more sense to get the front office in place first then have them bring in a coach but I guess it depends on who they're going after. Anyways, here's a list of some coaching candidates from CBS:

I dunno man, something tells me he's out...

Bud is #1 choice but I think he goes to Milwaukee. That's the hottest job on the market right now and he's the best coach....it's an obvious marriage. Ownership is in win-now mode, doubt a new coach is the choice. Stackhouse I like but I don't think he's the right choice with Drummond & Blake. Think you need a proven commodity with this.

I would go with Vogel because of his defensive success in Indiana and his success with Hibbert/West during his time in Indiana as well. Orlando didn't work out so well but I think that was mainly because of lack of talent.....like reaaaaaaaal lack of talent. I'd like to see him come in and turn us into a defensive first team but for him to hire an offensive coordinator to run the offense. Besides that nothing really excites me besides maybe Hornacek but don't think he would be able to manage Dre or Blake. Wonder if Blatt would take an Associate Head Coach role? Him and Vogel together would be awesome.

Monty Williams will be a candidate too btw.

To be clear this is their overall candidates list for all of the open coaching jobs. And I'm sure there are at least a handful of under-the-radar names missing from it.

Rondo as player-coach. Or, if he's ready to retire, Rondo as coach.

As that may be unrealistic, here's a darkhorse name:

Chris Finch -

Current associate head coach of the Pelicans. N.O. hired him away from the Nuggets this offseason to help structure an offense for AD and Cousins. He's been a head coach overseas, and in the Olympics for England.

Jeff Van Gundy has repeatedly bashed the Pistons in the media over the years for letting go coaches.

I was surprsied Stan took the job, and Jeff basically said how tough a job his brother sighed up for.

He's out.

And honestly I'm underwhelmed by the available guys. I'd rather go off-menu and see if we can't find the next great coach rather than signing someone who's been alright somewhere else.

100% makes sense to get the GM before the coach.

Also, people in the know are expecting Toronto to fire their coach and I think he is at least worth considering.

Stackhouse or one of the spurs assistants.

I think Mark Jackson could make this squad play competitive basketball

Isnt V. Negro known for developing young talent? I personally really never believed he was a good coach.

Mimic the Lions - hire away a tandem from the Boston area team and bring in Zarren as GM and Larranaga to coach.

Yeah im all for Stackhouse.

Frank Vogel is a defensive coach that wouldnt have very great defensive players so pass.

Mike Bud would be great if we needed to get over a contending team or something. Hell we cant make the playoffs.

Chauncey & Stackhouse if we cant get Hinkie.

Vogel completely sucks balls. I just watched him in Orlando the past 2 years and he is horrible on defense. I think he rode Paul Goerges coattails along with other players at the right time that made him look good. Vogel is an aboslutely horrid coach who holds nobody accountable. He is basically a nice guy letting players do what they want.

Becky may succeed as a head coach of an established Playoff Caliber team, but I seriously doubt she can take bottom feeders and develop them.

I think she's just as big of a question mark as other unproven assistants out there -- both in possible floor and ceiling. I'm just not super-enthused about anyone I've heard about so far. Is there someone people are excited about that I'm missing?

Bud is my first pick but I do like the idea of bennett (uva) or maybe finally izzo is willing to jump from the debacle at Msu

I think izzo with the pistons would look good to the nba and maybe they will fix the draft like they did with Cleveland years ago and give us our pick back

Looks like Borrego is going to Charlotte.

Atlanta may have narrowed it down to Lloyd Pierce, Stephen Silas, Jay Larranaga, and Nate Tibbetts. (I like their list)

That would leave Milwaukee, Orlando, and Detroit. Toronto too if Casey is out, but it sounds like they might just elevate Nurse if that happens.

The Bucks don't seem like they're in on Stackhouse (at this point) but Orlando is. They're casting a wide net with a lot of candidates, but that makes sense. Have to find somebody that knows how to utilize Giannis to the fullest. The Magic are also interested in Udoka and Vanterpool.
