Could we have gotten Leonard for Drummond?

Certain rumors say they asked for Embiid or Simmons from Philadelphia, while other leaks are saying they rebuffed packages around picks or young players wanting "now" players instead.

Final package they accepted was Derozen, Poetl, top 20 protected FRP that becomes two seconds after this season if not conveyed and in return got Leonard, Green and $5M .

Would a Detroit package of Dre, Bullock or Johnson and our FRP with similar protections have been enough? If it would have been - should we have offered it?

I think there is a real possibility we would have offered it if Stan was still here. And he was looking to move Dre I believe, and Dre did have that cryptic tweet upon annoucement of SVG being fired which he tweeted out to the effect "I'm not going anywhere".

Much like TO wanting to get out of DDR's deal, we could have used this to get out of Dre's and better balance our salary structure both. In our case it would have been in both cases if Leonard walked at least we'd have huge money off the books (given what centers make in free agency Dre is a HUGE overpay) and even if by some miracle Leonard stayed we'd get the 60M yearly to two bigs and have it spread around better to point, wing, big.

A read a tweet opinion from a TO beat writer saying that Casey and Leonard would have been a perfect match in Toronto. Casey is the ultimate players coach, a defense first guy but also lets his players play. It's too bad that Casey and Stefanski were locked into building relationships and trust with the players and really couldn't come in pitching woo to them only to turn around and trade one first chance. Not necessarily the wrong move really - just bad timing. And I don't think Kawhi would like playing for Stan at all anyways, so if he was here and did trade for him he certainly would have been a one-and-done because I get the feeling none of the players liked playing for micromanaging Stan.

Timing just wasn't right for us.

I don't think dre is a good fit at all in SA. A frontline of Rudy Gay, Aldridge and Dre? With Gasol in the mix. And they like Bertans too. They really needed a perimeter player coming back if they wanted to stay competitive.

That's why Jokic got a max this offseason

Thats why Cousins got 5mill, Nurk only signed 4 for 48, Favors 2 for 26, Randle 2 for 18, DAI only got a 1 year deal, and Capela hasnt gotten a max offer on his restricted free agency from anyone. Hell you could of signed a Brook Lopez for 3mill on a 1year deal this season. Like i said center value was at its lowest. Sure if you already have a Jokic/Towns/Embiid you lock them up. Those are also centers who do ALOT more then Drummond.

Teams werent going to give us much for Drummond it is what it is. His value this offseason with the big man loaded draft and centers in free agency would of had his value on the market at a all time low.

Cousins couldnt even sleep because he was getting no offers. Sure dudes a head case but teams would always roll the dice on a big man with that kind of talent in past off seasons.

Any of those guys all stars? Cousins isn't what you think he is. He's not coming back until mid season and that injury is a big deal. Drummond is like Gobert not Favors. You can keep making arguments but as far as I know Drummond is one offensive shot away from dominating the game.

Well they supposedly wanted Embiid from the Sixers...

(And Gasol is 38yrs old)

Gasol is a shell of his old self. And Cousins contract has nothing to do with the value of centers - it has to do with his Achilles.

But as was mentioned earlier, trading Drummond for a one year rental is a bad move. And even if we blow up the team, there are a lot of other players we move first before Drummond. I think we could have gotten Leonard with Drummond - we just weren't interested in that.

I would've asked for the same thing. They still ended up with a star which is a pretty good trade.

If Leonard agreed to an extension I'd do that trade OR if I knew I can sign someone in free agency next offseason I'd do that trade.

Getting a year of Leonard with his questionable leg and attitude for Drummond? It makes sense only if you are a Zaza fan, as he would become our starting center.

I think I'll pass on that one.

Embiid and Dre aren't in the same conversation in terms of talent and fit.

You may laugh, but what is a one year rental of Leonard really worth to the Pistons? Because no way is he resigning with us.

Yes some of those guys were all stars. DAJ was a all star not a all star sub last season. Capela would easily be an all star in the eastern conference and is possibly more valuable then Drummond(Capelas on a really good team and a does alot of **** without the ball) . Cousins could come back at a highlevel athletes can be amazing you dont know and i dont know. Drummond being a eastern all star sub doesnt magically put him into elite category of players anyways.

The point is when you see all these bigs getting lowball contracts then you know that the spurs wouldnt have any interest in trading in Drummond. It doesnt matter if he was a "all star" and is one of the non eastern conf playoff pistons best players. The market for centers doesnt exist. If the spurs wanted a another center they could of landed a pretty good one for cheap in free agency.
