The Pistons roster the next couple of years

Post#1 » by whitehops » Fri Jul 27, 2018 3:30 pm

Ok, so the roster for this year is set and there is little flexibility for any trades due to us being so close to the luxury tax line. here is the salary outlook (khyri thomas hasn't signed a contract yet but i imagine it will be similar to bruce brown's)

so next offseason we could potentially lose SJ, ish smith, reggie bullock our third string PG and C. we would have ~$27 million in space before we go over the tax line to re-sign any or all of them. given our cap situation and that we would only be able to sign mediocre UFA's, it might be worth re-signinga couple of the first three.

the season after that though, the only players on the books are blake, drummond, kennard and likely bruce brown for ~$72 million.

i know "trade blake" or trade drummond" is an easy solution, but if you're in the shoes of the senior advisor of basketball whatever and gores has told you that you can't trade either, how would you build the team in what appears to be a pretty pivotal time in the franchise? who would you keep and what moves would you try to make?

Side note, the cap hits from signing Calderon and Zaza instead of Buycks/Moreland saved us $300K, which will go towards signing Khyri Thomas (probably ~1M) without going over the luxury tax.

Unless Ellenson has a miraculous turnaround this season, I cant them picking up his option for 19/20.

If Gotes told me I couldn’t trade either, I’d pass on the job lol. But within those constraints, the only thing I would consider is trading this year’s expirings for picks and players that expire in 2020. Then next year when you have all those contracts expiring, you can start to pick up better players via trade......

^^^^yep. Get another impact player on a 2yr deal that helps us win now. Then we'll have lots of flexibility in 2yrs

One plus side from the new contract length in this cba.... it's pretty easy to time contracts to expire in a particular year. As long as we don't do anything stupid this year, next year we'll have some big expiring deals to use as trading chips.

Kennard doesn't actually have THREE team option years, does he? It's been 2 guaranteed and 2 option years on FRPs for a while now.

If Ellenson doesn't show some improvement this season I wouldn't be surprised to see us not pick up his option for next year. He's looking like a minimum salary type player or out of the league if he doesn't show us something this year.
