Detroit — Little Caesars Arena is getting the red out. Well, sort of.

After an inaugural season with many complaints about the bright red seats in the lower bowl during Pistons and Red Wings games, there’s going to be a change.

There will be new permanent black seats installed at Little Caesars Arena, beginning in December and continuing for “a multi-month process,” according to a release.

In the interim, the lower-bowl seats will have black seat covers, similar to last season, when Art Van Furniture sponsored covers for most of the areas in the lower bowl.

How bloody lame and desperate. Seats look just as empty. Talk about band-aid solution. Gores is gonna Gores.

Mike Ilitch would have never agreed to that. Gonna look **** for Wings games to have black seats.

red seats were a dumb idea to begin with

piston fans seem to think they're the only ones with attendance issues but Its because we seem to be the only arena with non black seats. it's the most noticible

further goes to the point that LCA is not a pistons arena.. even the logo is a hockey puck. mismanaged from the beginning

You're kidding yourself if you think the attendance issues have anything to do with the color of the seats or the arena logo. Seriously. If the Pistons were winning 55 games a year and making deep playoff runs you wouldn't be able to get a ticket to the games even if the seats were puke green and the arena logo was the poop emoji.

Yeah, let's put a bunch of money into making t not quite stand out as much when the seats are empty because nobody wants to put down big money to see a mediocre product that most people who live within 20 minutes of the stadium can't even afford to begin with. That sounds like a great business decision.

That's a step up from purchasing mannequins to occupy empty seats.

don't think anyone mentioned or put together color of seats with attendance.

clearly the color is an eyesore and why they're changing it to black. other teams have bad attendance and it's also not a running joke because empty black seats are less engrained when you see the arena

Actually, I think the pistons were 2nd worst in the league in % of seats purchased. And we all know that there were waaaay more empty seats than the announced attendance would indicate.

So your point was simply that red seats are an eyesore? Who gives a crap? Not the people sitting or not sitting in the seats. They're either at the arena to watch a game or not at the arena to not watch a game.

Half full or nearly empty arenas other than Detroit aren't a running joke? Ever heard of the Atlanta Hawks? Or the Miami Heat?

I think it was just brought up a lot more with the Pistons because A. It's a brand new arena and B. It was extra noticeable because of the red seats.

Obviously changing the color doesn't do anything to affect the attendance. They're probably just hoping they don't hear about it quite as much if it's less noticeable.

Clearly the real answer is to put a better team on the floor and/or significantly reduce prices, but that's much more difficult.

I don't think most or even many seats at arenas are black. Most are team colors. Having black in our door stadiums would make them hot as hell in the sun, and inside I think it would look the arena look more empty. Given the Wing colors are Red and White though, I guess black was the only option. If it was a Piston arena they could have went Piston blue or even Motor City jersey blue.

Black will look jarring and stupid and just further highlight the issue in the first place. Should have blue backrest covers for Piston games if Gores is so insecure about the lack of attendance. At least he could have pretended to want to make the arena feel more "Piston" for home games with that change. Going black was just so obvious.

This is not only for the Pistons, the Red Wings are no longer selling out either, lots of open seats there too on TV.

Sure, but Red is also predominant Red Wing color. I don't think Wings would really make this change - they're just providing cover for the move for Gores. I mean wearing a red wing home jersey(they're the red ones right, with whites on the road these days?) vs aempty red wing red seat doesn't look all that different. Red Wings spammed the hell out of making everything red to include the red lit up ceiling on purpose.

obviously the pistons and wings give a crap that's why they're changing them to black. not sure what your argument is.

I said it before, i'll say it again...dumping the Palace for LCA was pure idiocy. Leaving one of the richest counties in the country for one of the poorest is just on a whole different level of stupid. No one in north Oakland County is going to drive 40+ minutes and deal with downtown traffic for a mediocre product.

Well it's not like people in Detroit were driving in that horrible suburban traffic for a mediocre team either so I doubt a counties "status" has anything to do with this.

The fact is the whole pistons involvement was rushed and left a sour taste in people's mouths.. especially the hockey fans who felt like that should only be their arena (only in detroit this would happen) this should have been In the works for at least 2 years like every other new stadium for people to get used to the change.

I live in SF and people are still complaining about the warriors moving to SF and it's been known for 2/3 years. Of course people in Oakland county are going to feel a way when they're told 6-12 months that the team that lives close to them is moving further from them.

The only solution is winning.. cause those seats were empty at the palace after 2012.

Suburban uncles and dads weren't coming to the games regardless if it was in Oakland County or not.

The team just plain isn't marketable nor attractive for the past few years. Couple that with the fact that they have been mediocre too.

That there’s no such thing as a smart or dumb seat color. Pretty simple.

They're replacing all 18000 red seats with black ones. Neither "home" team rocks black in it's color scheme. Both have red. If Pistons were still concerned, they could have kept up the seat cover gimmick but just used blue for the lower bowl area or something.

I wonder if the Pistons will change color scheme to add black next - that would be a very Gores thing to do.

Still chaps the hell out of me that they use these ridiculous "Chrome" and "Motor City" jerseys with gray and navy instead of bringing back those great red alts from 10 years ago.

Bingo.

I'm one of the suburbanites living in Oakland county 40 minutes away from downtown and I would MUCH rather go downtown than to Auburn Hills. And no, I am not alone. The reason I haven't been to a Pistons game in years is because I'm not going to pay to watch a rarely entertaining team. I can watch the games at home on the big screen in much more comfort without spending a dime outside of a cable bill.

I've said it before and I'll say it again--all the people saying that Oakland county residents won't go downtown to see a game don't live in Oakland county and don't go to games. Take a look at the crowd at any Pistons, Red Wings, Tigers or Lions game and you're going to see a vast majority of white suburbanites. They're the target customer demographic and have been for years.

Except you'd be wrong...I live in Clarkston and have zero interest going to LCA. When they played at the Palace, I went to 5-10 games a year. And no, I am not alone. If white suburbanites are the target demo, moving away from white surbanville was probably a poor decision.
