Detroit declining Ellenson's 4th year option

Too late, should have declined his third year option instead of having him waste a roster spot and valuable cap $ this season.
At least he'll be a true expiring contract now, so that counts for something right?

Pretty much a no brainer. Starting next season, Ellenson will be playing in Europe for the rest of his career.

He needs to get on the trading block. We can use his contract as an expiring.

A couple of years too late. Good Riddance.

Interesting. Means he needs to be on the trade block as an expiring. He's a dead roster spot. If we had cap space to sign somebody else I wonder if we'd just flat cut him right now.
Probably could trade him for a vet minimum type on a multiyear deal - who could be had? We can't take on any salary this year though as we're right at the tax threshold - like 100K from it.

The benefit of hindsight is great but you cringe when you look at Ellenson and then realise the players selected after him:
Caris LeVert
Pascal Siakam
Dejounte Murray
Malcolm Brogdon
Fred VanVleet (undrafted)

The guy just isn't an nba player, what a horrible draft pick.

I know what we don't have and that's Donovan Mitchell

Luke is guy who can shoot the 3, can go left or right, has spot up jumper that is excellent passer and bb IQ is high....playing behind 2 guys, one drafted 25th, the other undrafted, one career avg. Is 5.6 pts per game & the other 8 pts...both after 5 yrs in league. Make no sense. I would play Luke like Rip, coming off multiple screens.

I think the the poor drafting for the last decade tends to have some people overrate Luke Kennard despite his obvious athleticism and defensive limitations.
Luke possesses one + skill which is spot up shooting, so he's not a complete bust like several of the recent draft picks. So I think that leads people to think he's better and has more upside than he really does.

Who should we have drafted instead?
Once you get past the lottery, seems like that draft class sucks.

I wanted Wade Baldwin IV or Sabonis in this draft. I didn't want Caris because he was coming off a major injury. So I can't bitch about this bust. I think if Ellenson didn't drop that Malik Beasley would have been our pick at the time anyways.
At least we're not PHX and non-tendering 4 OA Dragan Bender.

Ellenson was just lost out there. Sorry bub. The NBA isn’t for you.

Yeah, poor Henry, who has already made a lot more than most of us ever will. I can't argue though, as he's never put it together in the league. Likely he'll make good money playing ball somewhere else.

Luke is a role player and weak defender. Donovan is a two-way star.
Rip was one of the most athletic players in the league during his time. Luke is a scrub by comparison. [/quote]

Does he get a 2-way contract next year from an NBA team or head to Europe?

That depends entirely on Henry himself and what he values most.
Does he want to stay in the comfort of the states and scratch and claw his way to try and make a roster for pennies (relatively speaking of course)?
Or does he just want to actually get on the floor and play and make some decent money in the process? He can use his 1st round NBA draft pick pedigree to carve himself out a pretty good living playing basketball overseas.

I wish they could trade Henry to some sucker of a team for a top 58 protected 2nd round pick. Freeing up the cap $ and roster spot necessary to bring in someone who is actually NBA caliber.
What a waste, they waited too long. Should have declined his 3rd year option.
On the plus side, other than the 5 minute or so cameo he had in the preseason looks like Khyri will be getting his first taste of live action since summer league.
