Pistons are active in trade talks - Willing to trade first rounder.
Per the Wiretap....
Pelicans, Pistons, and Kings are all listed as being actively trying to improve their teams in trade talks.
Pelicans are actively trying to improve their team to help ensure Anthony Davis signs a supermax this offseason.
Tom Gores wants the Pistons back in the playoffs and is willing to trade their 2019 first rounder to improve.
Kings have been out of the playoffs since 2006 and they have large expiring contracts they could trade and take back longer salary if it means they can get better players who can improve their team.

Re: Pistons are active in trade talks - Willing to trade first rounder.
Just gotta be careful on trading that 1 st. There’s definitely going to be a decent SG or SF prospect left in that 12-16 range.
Unless it’s used in a big deal for someone actually worth it better be like top 20 protected. Not the best draft but definitely one where we can fill a position of need on the perimeter.

If you miss the playoffs in the east (as a 9 seed like last year), you're still probably going to have a high pick with a good chance for top 3. Right now 9th seed Miami would have the 8th pick.

Re: Pistons are active in trade talks - Willing to trade first rounder.
I'd trade upwards of a top three protected FRP for the right return I guess. I wouldn't trade it in a salary dump - Gores can pay the tax for a season rather than selling our pick like that. Top 14 protection more likely though in most deals unless getting a star back.
If we're trading our first I want a young cost controlled point guard though - Somebody identified by out analytics guru's in the front office that might be out of favor with their current team. Tradeboard types seem to think Dennis Smith Jr isn't a fit in Dallas anymore with Luca, NYK has Mudiay and Frank Ntilikina - I'd be interested in either of them, Kris Dunn in Chicago, Dinwiddie or Russell in Brooklyn, Fultz in Philly, Lonzo Ball, Dante Exum...
We could dangle Ish and our FRP for all of those above and it would work salary wise. Of course we could expand things bigger.

Re: Pistons are active in trade talks - Willing to trade first rounder.
I dread waking up tomorrow and seeing "Detroit deals 2019 1st for J.R. Smith"
I'm not that attached to the pick, because if we do nothing it is somewhere between 10-18, but what can we do when we are so close to the edge of the luxury tax? It means either we pay the luxury tax (this is not the team we'd want to do that for) or we send out some salary (likely reducing the value of our package), meaning we wouldn't be getting anyone special.

Tom Gores' Securus faced a class action lawsuit in 2024. The company engaged in a "quid pro quo kickback scheme" with county jails in Michigan which banned in-person visits in order to maximize revenue from voice and video calls.

True, we could just miss the playoffs and have a realistic shot at wings like De’Andre Hunter, Kevin Porter Jr, Keldon Johnson. That could be a really valuable pick given how strong the west is

A trade like Leuer + 2019 first to Washington for Morris wouldn't be bad. We shed Leuer's extra year of salary and get a good rotation player. Could play him at some SF and all the PF minutes when Blake isn't in. The other benefit being it clears up some cap space for us to use the full MLE this summer while also having bird rights to resign any of Morris, Smith, Bullock, or Johnson that we want to try and resign.

Re: Pistons are active in trade talks - Willing to trade first rounder.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but since Detroit traded the '18 1st in the Blake trade they are unable to trade the '19 1st correct?
I know you can't trade 1st rounders in back to back years, but since the '18 draft has already occurred maybe that creates some kind of loophole allowing the '19 pick to be traded.

Markieff Morris isn't a SF, he's the 4/5 twin. He also signed with Rich Paul to represent him in his (and Mook's) upcoming free agency and is going to look to get PAID given the discount he accepted last contract. Paul tried to leverage us hard with KCP negotiations - I wouldn't touch this trade or Kieff with a 10-foot pole.

You can't trade consecutive *future* first round picks. 2018 draft is over and done with so no longer matters.

Yeah, ugh gross. I don't like the player nor the position he plays, and at this point he has no upside left.
If Detroit is sending out a 1st, they need to have immensely higher aspirations of a return than Markieff Morris.

Re: Pistons are active in trade talks - Willing to trade first rounder.
That's the hard thing, most of our "tradeable" contracts have negative value. If Jon Leuer was expiring he'd be an easier contract to move with a first rounder for a better player. Some of the value of the first goes to get a team to take a contract like Leuer back.
Unless you can move someone like GR3 + 1st for a player on a smaller contract, but most players you want to trade for are going to have more salary than GR3.

Re: Pistons are active in trade talks - Willing to trade first rounder.
Jackson/Kennard/Robinson/1st
for
Mccollum
Detroit gets their desperately needed wing scorer which takes a ton of pressure and defensive attention off Blake. Pushes them into the tax, but its worth it for CJ especially since he's locked up for 2.5 more seasons.
Since they would already be in the tax, Detroit goes hunting for a serviceable PG via the TPE.
Obviously a Dame/Reggie backcourt won't work, but a Dame/Curry one can. They do this to get some young talent and some luxury tax/cap relief while looking to flip Reggie as an expiring this summer. Although admittedly, they would probably only consider this if they end up taking a tumble in the standings.

Watch Detroit trade for John Wall. Finally, we'll have our two-way playmaking point guard!

oh dear. on the bright side, the article on wiretap simply states we own a first rounder. Unless we are getting a talented young prospect back, like Ingram, trading our first rounder should be a non-starter, imo.

Re: Pistons are active in trade talks - Willing to trade first rounder.
JR Smith is the last type of player this team needs. If anything, we need another player who will hold Dre and Reggie(if he's still here) accountable for their actions on the court on a nightly basis. Someone like Morris I think would be good. Draymond would be ideal but that's not happening. Butler would have been ideal as well perhaps, although I'm not sure Dre has the mentality to take a hard nosed leader like that. Overall, Dre has been better this year now 80% of the time his energy is there, but he still has his relapses for sure when things don't go his way, he picks up early fouls, and opposing big goes at him, etc....
