"A Better Way to Evaluate NBA Defense"

That's the tagline of the article published yesterday in FiveThirtyEight about this new advanced stat metric rating system for defense. DRAYMOND stands for:

Defensive Rating Accounting for Minimum Openness by Nearest Defender

A bit corny. But the equation is fairly intricate. A link to the article is below.

The rating system is based on opponents shooting data in the regular season and playoffs, with a minimum of 10,000 possessions played since 2013-14.

Draymond Green is ranked #1. (Hence the name, I'd guess)

Joel Embiid is ranked #2.

Porzingis #3

Gobert #4

Tim Duncan #5

ANDRE DRUMMOND #156

Quite a few still do.

He's the one who refused to close out on a shooter during a playoff home game.

For the 2018-19 season, Drummond was ok defensively. Not great, but he was better last year than he was before the Blake trade.

DRAYMOND is an interesting way of looking at defense, by tracking how often you are the closest defender to a player and by tracking how well that player shoots relatively.

Drummond was +1.01 last season (right about 50th in the league), which is much better than his average over the past half decade of 0.00 .... It's safe to say that last season's +1.01 brought up his numbers quite a bit.

Drummond is a decent post/help defender but he isn't as good as you would expect for someone with his athleticism. He is pretty poor against bigs that can shoot on the perimeter which probably hurts his numbers in this category.

Tim Duncan? I thought this list is for active players only.

If retired players are on the list, Dre ranking in the mid 100's out of everyone in the history of the game isn't shabby at all.

The ranking encompasses the past 6 seasons. 2013/14 thru 2018/19.


They also did a ranking for just the 2018/19 season. Dre was #59.

Dre is fool’s gold.

No offense other than put backs and dunks.

Defense looks poor and these stats suggest hes worse than he looks.

Huge contract. We should have kept Baynes and traded Dre.

He's never been a stalwart on defense and more often than not mopes on that end anyways. This adds on to those evaluations

He's solid defensively overall, but extremely erratic. I thought everyone knew this. Some games locked in, some games spaced out.

If anything, these stats show that he was above average last season, while previously being really awful. That's a big step in the right direction. Doesn't mean I want to give him $30 million+ per year for another 5 seasons, but I thought his defense was better last season (really since he got called out by Embid there has been a more consistant effort even though he's been torched at times by bigs who can shoot).

Dre is not an elite defender!?! Thank God we have this new stat to let me know. I might have gone on believing he was actually a difference maker!

Do you even basketball, bro?

He's right at average for his career, but last year was a good defensive year for him. He was 59th, meaning he'd be the 2nd or 3rd best defender on a team with a random allotment of players.

Also, Bruce Brown was 19th last year as a rookie. Pretty impressive.

Stat seems to skew towards big men as well. I think Drummond is as good now as he's gonna be on defense. He just doesn't have a natural feel or motor for it. If he's so-so on defense then you're paying a big man who can't defend or can't shoot max money. Hope we move his contract and I hope to god we don't extend him.
