Love it. Instead of getting a really old Pau or something we pick up a 23 year old pf/center who looked decent on the pelicans when he got minutes. He can shoot some threes and seems like a solid defender too.

Called it.

Really like this move. This type of pickup makes wayyyyyy more sense than signing Gasol/Koufos/etc. This kid has decent upside, and he can potentially carve out some minutes backing up Dre.

A 6-foot-10 power forward, Wood impressed down the stretch last season, averaging 16.9 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks in just 23.6 minutes per game over eight appearances with the Pelicans.

Imagine going from old and slow Zaza to this kid as your backup center.

Look out teams in the East Pistons are moving on up in the standings.

Wood is set to earn $1.6 million this season, with over $800 of that set to guarantee if he remains on Detroit’s roster until the 2019-20 NBA season.

Why does he keep getting waived and passed around though? I mean as use of our 15th spot not a big deal, but there has to be hidden warts here.

Well, New Orleans just drafted Zion #1 pick and Jaxson Hayes #8 pick. I presume those highly drafted bigs taking priority in the development process/minutes distribution equations made having Wood around basically pointless.

Milwaukee probably waived him simply to help them get under the luxury tax threshold. Wood's cap number was 1.5 mil, Milwaukee ended the season 1.3 mil under the tax

Not saying Wood might not have warts, but those are two entirely justifiable reasons why he might have been released for reasons other than talent/outlook circumstances.

Dude absolutely murdered 2018 summer league, was named to the first team in the process. He was highly productive when he got on the floor for New Orleans last season. So he has played really well in the limited opportunities he's received.

Seems like a reasonable approach to getting a 'bargain' big. Versatile game, good length (over 7'3" wingspan.) Young enough that there's still room for growth.

Looks like what Leur was supposed to be at 1/10 the cost, better defense, has possible upside.

Whats not to like?

This is why Drummond getting the max is so bad. 1 million for bigs that can shoot 3s and play defense.

didn’t the same thing happen with dinwiddie? this seems like a reasonable gamble that could pay off.

Next year isn't guaranteed until mid-January as well.

We're basically done for the off-season now though and only a few hundred thousand dollars under the tax.

Worth pointing out we basically passed on #30 OA to be able to claim Christian Wood. Money we saved with a trade down and draft and stash left us the money under the tax for this guy. Does he outplay Claxton or Fernando?

Never heard of him until now but it looks like he has put up some really nice games in his very limited play time. He has good shooting from and can hit 3s, block shots, and is pretty mobile. He looks like he is kind of what Maker should be but far more coordinated. Very happy with this no risk pick up.

Nice signing. Keep in mind that these nice performances he had for New Orleans were in the final 8-game stretch of the season. But he's worth a flyer. These are the type of acquisitions we should be making.
